worry, though i nearly went for shrines of paralysis

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Monday, 6 February 2017 15:19 (eight years ago)

Best would have been a more fun poll?

I Am In Atlanta And Thug Is Young (imago), Monday, 6 February 2017 15:25 (eight years ago)

(most of what I've heard of this list is actually pretty listenable, but i'll probably vote for DEP as the worst - what the hell is that doing here in 2017?)

Siegbran, Monday, 6 February 2017 15:30 (eight years ago)

Yes.xp

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 6 February 2017 15:30 (eight years ago)

I don't know which is worst. It's not like this is a terrible list. I love the Jeff Rosenstock, Vektor, Cult of Luna, and Wormrot albums.

jmm, Monday, 6 February 2017 15:32 (eight years ago)

oh lol i voted for the best accidentally? whoops

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Monday, 6 February 2017 15:32 (eight years ago)

worst i've heard on this is car seat headrest

DEP album is great and one of their best ffs

I Am In Atlanta And Thug Is Young (imago), Monday, 6 February 2017 15:34 (eight years ago)

I'm glad that Worry is getting RYM love

actual worst I've heard is maybe the swans record? I found it boring idk (I liked the other two super epic albums a lot)

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Monday, 6 February 2017 15:35 (eight years ago)

I'm listening to Car Seat Headrest now and are we sure this isn't a Paul Westerberg side project?

ornate orchestral arrangements (DJP), Monday, 6 February 2017 15:36 (eight years ago)

King Gizzard etc etc is a strong worst candidate based on what I've heard buy don't rule out any of the animal collective shit

I Am In Atlanta And Thug Is Young (imago), Monday, 6 February 2017 15:39 (eight years ago)

Car Seat Headrest in a walk

flappy bird, Monday, 6 February 2017 15:39 (eight years ago)

xp I'm so tired of hearing about Car Seat Headrest that I should probably listen to them soon, just so I can laugh knowingly at jokes like DJP's

bernard snowy, Monday, 6 February 2017 15:40 (eight years ago)

honestly a "neo-psych" record called Sleep Cycle by him out of animal collective doesn't sound like the worst thing anyone's tried to sell me lately

bernard snowy, Monday, 6 February 2017 15:42 (eight years ago)

nonagon infinity is really fun

global tetrahedron, Monday, 6 February 2017 15:44 (eight years ago)

things young rym types fucking love: swans, animal collective, frank ocean

I Am In Atlanta And Thug Is Young (imago), Monday, 6 February 2017 15:45 (eight years ago)

For anyone who hasn't heard it, Worry is a free download and is really worth checking out. http://www.quoteunquoterecords.com/qur088.htm

jmm, Monday, 6 February 2017 15:46 (eight years ago)

frank ocean is the one that gets me. if you're between 15 and 25 and on RYM you have to think it's the most profound, affecting music in the world. it's the law. but why

I Am In Atlanta And Thug Is Young (imago), Monday, 6 February 2017 15:47 (eight years ago)

Can anyone explain why Wardruna is on this list? Very niche-y to have such a following; it sounds like medieval swords&sorcery video game music (many top comments are jokes about playing Skyrim) - - predictably, anything to do with norse paganism draws the interest & ire of the white nationalist contingent (in the words of one particularly toxic youtube commenter, "Only Faggot LARPers listen to music like this without being an Ethno-Centrist") but I can't imagine that's a very large market ... although perhaps a very vocal one that is over-represented on RYM?

bernard snowy, Monday, 6 February 2017 15:51 (eight years ago)

oh apparently I was listening to the old Wardruna record -- the new one seems more song-oriented, there's a weird whispery chorus of very robed-sounding people singing lyrics (in Norwegian) and now I guess some children are chanting a poem? (again, in Norwegian)

bernard snowy, Monday, 6 February 2017 15:56 (eight years ago)

the multiple layers of irony coating Car Seat Headrest's "Drunk Drivers" are almost refreshing after the deathly earnestness of the Wardruna comments section rune feuds

bernard snowy, Monday, 6 February 2017 16:02 (eight years ago)

when he sings "It doesn't have to be like this," I nod my exaggerated agreement and then, like the singer's parents, fall asleep on the floor, which I think was intentional

bernard snowy, Monday, 6 February 2017 16:04 (eight years ago)

the better albums seem diminished by being included in this list, which overall seems like the thanatos to the ilm shambhala eros

ogmor, Monday, 6 February 2017 16:07 (eight years ago)

I'm looking at the ratings on that Warduna album, and lot of them seem to be coming from RYM's strong Polish contingent. I'm not sure if that explains things more, or confuses them.

devvvine, Monday, 6 February 2017 16:11 (eight years ago)

This list is fine, quite a few things I like on there. Worst is either Car Seat Head Rest or Swans, DEP are a decent band that I don't really feel the need to listen to any more (I was a big fan from ages 17-24 or thereabouts).

Tempted to vote for King Gizzard etc because of the name but I haven't actually listened to them so probably shouldn't.

ultros ultros-ghali, Monday, 6 February 2017 16:11 (eight years ago)

I blame the Fantano/4Chan crowd for stuff like Death Grips, Swans, and Car Seat Headrest, but I'm not sure if they are to blame for some of RYM's obsessions with Prog, Metal, and Nordic Folk music. I think that's a different crowd in RYM's userbase.

MarkoP, Monday, 6 February 2017 16:15 (eight years ago)

And then there's the small but vocal group of AOR fans, that boost up middling albums from time to time.

MarkoP, Monday, 6 February 2017 16:17 (eight years ago)

I'm not gonna go on a quoting rampage but Rosentock's lyrics are largely excellent

ogmor, Monday, 6 February 2017 16:23 (eight years ago)

Are we looking at different lists? I see two King Crimson albums and one Frank Zappa in RYM's top albums of 2016.

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Monday, 6 February 2017 16:34 (eight years ago)

Be'lakor and Trees of Eternity didn't make the ILM list, did they?

Anyway, there's as much or more that I'd want to check out from the RYM list as from the ILM one.

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Monday, 6 February 2017 16:35 (eight years ago)

A new Keith Rowe!

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Monday, 6 February 2017 16:36 (eight years ago)

Trees of Eternity weren't even nominated on the ILM metal poll (great album I discovered too late)

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Monday, 6 February 2017 16:36 (eight years ago)

Car Seat Headrest no contest. It will go down as one of the most overrated records of the decade in 3 years.

Swans is also terrible to my ears but the average rym user always seems to give them good scores whenever they release anything.

Oops, I like King Gizzard.

I must point out that the Niechęć album's a really good jazz-rock sort of thing

ultros ultros-ghali, Monday, 6 February 2017 16:48 (eight years ago)

Meta Meta and Shabaka are the two I'd recommend not on the ilm list, they're not perfect but they have some interesting moments.

dance cum rituals (Moka), Monday, 6 February 2017 16:49 (eight years ago)

There are way more albums I like in this list than in the whole ILM 77, so...

Dinsdale, Monday, 6 February 2017 16:55 (eight years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

This lost is really intriguing to me. That Death Spell Omega is super tight and I didn't hate what I heard from Sleep Cycle. Plus that Shambaka guy was behind one of my favorite albums of the year. Lots of stuff to check out. Is the RTJ worth the trouble though?

Ok I'm loving this Niechec album.

The strange thing about the RYM charts is that you could look at the charts from the 1960s up to the 2000s and think "hmm, that's pretty accurate", but the 2010s charts are bizarr
