The first that spring to mind: Danzig, Van Halen and....er...Vandenburg (erstwhile Whitesnake guitarist Adrian Vandenburg's pre-Whitesnake outfit).

Note: Band names that include the words "The" and "Band" (i.e. the Dave Matthew Band) do *NOT* count in this particular tally.

Have at it.

I believe the lead moron in Slaughter was named Mark Slaughter, so I guess Slaughter counts, eh?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 7 November 2002 04:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Do the Ramones count? Those were fake names, but... you know. Same idea.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 7 November 2002 04:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Also, how did we get this far without mentioning Bon Jovi? I mean, it should have been first on the list, no?

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 7 November 2002 04:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Good one, Sean, although chances are I was blocking the name, as Bon Jovi make absolutely crap music (which is not to say that Vandenburg made music of quality and distinction, but rather that Bon Jovi's at-best mediocre-on-a-good-day product was inescapable in its day).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 7 November 2002 04:47 (twenty-three years ago)

The lead singer from Bon Jovi's surname is Bongiovi isn't it? I think that means they're disqualified.

Jonny from Menswear's last name was Menswear tho, I'm certain - well, it was if you read Melody Maker.

Oh, and how could I forget Lynch Mob (named after axeman George Lynch, ex of Dokken, obv).

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 7 November 2002 15:16 (twenty-three years ago)

This is something I've always found intriguing...

Fishbone is named for their drummer "Fish", a nickname derived from his last name which is Fisher.

Phish is named for their drummer "Fish", a nickname derived from his last name which is Fishman.

Both bands were formed in the early 80s, and both are most well-known as good live acts.

nickalicious, Thursday, 7 November 2002 15:22 (twenty-three years ago)

If HSAS counts, then so does:

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 7 November 2002 22:55 (twenty-three years ago)

when Ultravox! were finishing off their first album, Island called up the studio and asked for all the band members' names so they could finish off the sleeve. Of course, Dennis shocks everyone by coming out with "Put me down as John Vox, or Johnny Vox." Realising what his game is, Warren Cann swiftly says, "Yes, and put me down as Warren Ultra".
