Sacred Paws - Strike A Match

I know a few Ilxors have expressed their love for this sweet little album. I heard it in a shop while deciding between two different records. I put them both back and bought this instead.
The vibe is the-same-but-different all the way through: super-tight African-influenced guitar and drum playing, a smidgen of 90s-era Matador indie (Helium, Sleater-Kinney), and some very infectious hooks. I like how this particular lead track kicks up a gear right towards the end.

The whole record has a simple, totally positive energy that I can't find in much else right now.

I really want them to play near me so I'm looking out. Do they even have a bass guitar in the mix? The playing is super-intricate. I haven't heard any of their other projects but apparently they have quite a few between them.

This is awesome, great guitarist

I haven't listened to this band yet but Rachel Aggs is also in Shopping and Trash Kit and they are both great.

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 12 April 2017 14:01 (eight years ago)

This album is great and is the Summerjam Hot Rock i've been waiting for.

devvvine, Wednesday, 12 April 2017 14:19 (eight years ago)

Rachel Aggs is the best!

emil.y, Wednesday, 12 April 2017 23:04 (eight years ago)

(Also when I complain about ilx liking the wrong indie -> Aggs bands are the right indie)

emil.y, Wednesday, 12 April 2017 23:06 (eight years ago)

This album is very good!

Contender for top 10 albums of 2017 for me so far.

dance cum rituals (Moka), Thursday, 13 April 2017 17:02 (eight years ago)

I like how genuinely fun it sounds, no pretentions just mindless sunny music.

dance cum rituals (Moka), Thursday, 13 April 2017 17:03 (eight years ago)

I adore this album. The drummer, Eilidh Rodgers, brings so much to the table and her interplay with Aggs really makes this thing pop. Just wanted to send some love the incredible drumming all over this record.

this is such a delight. they have a great dynamic together and i really love the drumming & the early r.e.m./sleater-kinney-esque overlapping vocals. the title track is one of the most joyous sounding things i've heard this year

two weeks pass...

Just discovered this album/band via the summer jam 2017 thread.
I'm not too familiar with the album yet and it may seem a bit repetitive/limited in its variety but so far I like it a lot.
My favourite track atm is "everyday".
They make me think of a mix between the Go-Go's and early Vampire Weekend.

This won the SAY Award tonight, as I had a feeling it would. Maybe not the album on the list that means the most to me but I'm still playing this frequently, just great upbeat pop for anyone who DOESN'T HATE FUN. Well deserved winner really, I was just rooting for Meursault for personal reasons.

Jonathan Hellion Mumble, Wednesday, 28 June 2017 21:40 (seven years ago)

Well, the Meursault is a much, much better album! I like Sacred Paws singles and their whole thing really but the album's a bit of a grind because it's kinda samey.

ufo, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 04:05 (six years ago)

discovered this band a few weeks ago by listening to forks's spotify playlist of the 2017 Top 77. thanks y'all, this shit is RIGHT up my alley, loopy and propulsive and maximally head-sticky. stoked that there's more new stuff coming.

Have only listened to handfuls of Aggs solo stuff that's on Bandcamp

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 29 November 2022 04:53 (two years ago)

Does her other group Shopping still exist?

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 29 November 2022 04:57 (two years ago)

Haven't heard anything about them breaking up, but also not heard anything about new stuff in the pipeline. All of the members have lots of projects so I guess we have to wait and see when this particular formation comes back together. Shopping are my faves of the bunch, so I hope they do have something coming soon.
