Green Pajamas: C/D

I heard a couple of things by the Green PJs (the Earworm single, and a couple of rather good compilation tracks) but I haven't made the commitment to a full length. Suggestions?

I've never heard of the band, sorry. I just wanna say that very frequently I think I'm looking at ILE when in fact I'm on ILM, and there's some thread like this with a band name unknown to me, and I take it literally. I thought some fucker really wanted to discuss the colour of his pyjamas.

If I wanted to discuss my pajamas, the thread would have been titled "white stripes"

I have "All Clues Lead to Megan's Bed" which is pretty good, even if they use the same "electric guitar posing as a sitar" trick a few too many times. Nice songs. Haven't come across much else though, although I think Parasol is putting out all their stuff right now.

Reading about them, they seemed like the kind of thing I might like, so I sought them out, but everything I heard was hopelessly dull. Evidently not for some people at MAGNET, though.

Curt (cgould), Friday, 8 November 2002 01:19 (twenty-three years ago)

is Magnet really into them or something? Do people actually read Magnet?

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 8 November 2002 01:20 (twenty-three years ago)

One criticism I've heard more than once is that all their songs sound the same. Is there much in that claim?

I read Magnet. I really rather like it.

Yeah, that's where I first heard of them. A few years ago, it seemed like every issue contained at least one GP reference, with an obligatory "criminally overlooked" in front, naturally.

Curt (cgould), Friday, 8 November 2002 01:30 (twenty-three years ago)

not having heard all their songs, it isn't fair for me to say if they're ALL alike, but "All Clues Lead to Megan's Bed" is fairly uniform. Not unpleasantly so, mind you, but it's not like I marvel at their versatility. It's not as wide-ranging psych-pop as something like, say, the Dukes of Stratosphear projects.

That's weird about Magnet, I hadn't noticed.

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 8 November 2002 01:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, I think they try to mix things up, probably in triubute to the eclecticism of classic 60s bands they take after. They're just a little to reverent about it.

shit.

your null fame (yournullfame), Friday, 8 November 2002 02:21 (twenty-three years ago)

i 'd trade my copy of Megan'd Bed for an extra Astral Weeks, 4 serious.

Aaron A., Friday, 8 November 2002 05:29 (twenty-three years ago)

i think 'strung behind the sun' is great. it's a pretty rich mish-mash of sounds and styles and shows a lot of range without coming off too gimmicky. there are some real gems and some couldabeens - and a couple outright stinkers ('graduation day' is just painful). the vocals can be difficult sometimes bUT AT ITS BEST IT GIVES FOLKADELIA A FRESH REWORKING!!@# etc.

...or maybe it's just shit. idunno.

i couldn't get into the other three or four albums i have/heard. dull and samey. no adventure.

I agree that Strung Behind the Sun is great- most definitely NOT uniform NOR dull. Jeff Kelly also has a solo thing going "Indescretion") which I dont like quite as much, cant comment on "All Clues Lead to Megan's Bed" as I havent heard it.

If you are interested in the GP, then Id say start with Strung Behind the Sun....the EPs arent that bad either...

one of the rags, I think it was MAGNET, recently had a McInterview with Kelly in it recently

Start with the Indian Winter singles compilation. There's some terrific stuff on there. If you like that, then continue but start with this first.

I love'm!! My favorites are "All Clues Lead to Megans Bed" and "Indian Winter". But I like all their stuff and Jeff Kelly's Solo Box set. Wish they had played Terrastock.

i thoroughly enjoy them. got hooked on the cheesy tune "pastel summer," but finally listened to their new full length (this is where we disappear). it has a good, dated vibe. fun.

three months pass...
Classic!!! All Clues Lead To Meaghan's Bed and Strung Behind the Sun (along with the Strung Out EP) are amazing, but they've REALLY outdone themselves with the recently issued Northern Gothic. The stuff from the '80s was excellent as well. Absolutely superb songcraft, great guitar work, good understated production. Jeff Kelly is one of the best songwriters of the last decade or so.

one year passes...
i'm listening to "through glass coloured roses", i gather it's a 'best-of' of sorts, full of fantastic stuff. none of it particularly psychedelic, well not when compared to the lucky bishops for instance.

note: i no longer read magnet.

the surface noise is one of tremendous importance to connoisseurs of histor (ele, Tuesday, 8 June 2004 10:34 (twenty-one years ago)

The Green Pajamas' "Summer of Lust" cassette was the first indy music I got into. I played that thing to death... too bad, cuz copies are going for $98 on gemm(!)
