Playboi Carti what what what what what what what what

So Playboi Carti's self-titled tape has been one my sleeper favs this year. It's buoyant and gleefully swaggy, and it fills me with Rae Sremmurd levels of joy, even though he's a fraction as clever as those guys are. He's got a kind of Lil Uzi Vert cult of personality thing going and has the same 2017 Soundcloud aesthetic as a lot of acts right now, but I haven't heard anybody else carry this sound quite so well across an entire project. Whole tape hangs together really beautifully. Saw him open for Gucci Mane and he was great live, too.

I really liked Al's takedown of the album on his blog... I think most of this is pretty accurate, even though my verdict is essentially the opposite of his

Playboi Carti spends a lot of his debut mixtape talking about other rappers sounding like him, and while I haven't really followed his career closely enough to know if that's actually true, I have a hard time really distinguishing him from his contemporaries in any meaningful way. In a way it doesn't even matter who influences who, because it feels like no matter what, he's the Chingy to Lil Uzi Vert's Nelly. And there's just something really loathsomely half-assed about this project that he seemed to delay over and over for a year or two until he finally had enough buzz for a major label to back it. He didn't give it a title, the cover looks like crap, he didn't credit his producers, and the songs sound like the same anonymous shit a thousand other guys are doing on SoundCloud.

Yeah it's a solid, cohesive listen front to back. Chappelle had that line about Lil Jon, how he always sounded like he was gonna start rapping but never did...I thought of that a lot during this tape lol

lol yeah that's spot on. This is one of those cases where the album is probably better because the rapper can't actually rap, though. It's just a kick hearing an excitable dude ad lib and make fun noises

flatbed freestyle is amazing... he's a popular and critically acclaimed young rapper who is somehow prob underrated as an auteurish weirdo

yeah agree w that summation ... the problem for me w that newer album is more abt sequencing than the actual content of the songs, it felt kinda like a random data dump ... strong music throughout, def kind of underrated bc hes not a uzi level star or w/e

it's good. I was listening to Japanese ambient immediately beforehand and it flowed v well

somewhat unexpectedly bright but this is great

Incredible production on this record. This is probably a lazy comparison but the whole thing feels very “punk” to me

it's trap taken to its absolute logical conclusion by my reckoning. rhymes, flows, wordplays all but jetisoned for gurgles and squeaks, phrases repeated over and over, and some seriously out-there production. i'm on board.

I love the mix on “die lit” and it might be one of my favorite albums in the genre. I think there’s some really cool sounds on this one, but I’m not a fan at all of the mix, everything sounds tiny and on the same level except the vocals, which - let’s be honest - aren’t the most pleasant thing to listen to.

the vocal experimentation is by far the best thing about the album

yeah its punk bc it is all sustain rather than the spaciousness of, say, "pretty girls like trap music". like a punk record, everything is same volume. and it's not a lazy idea, there's a song called "punk monk" on it! and rap has been flirting with rock and punk for like 5 years now

I don’t disagree that they are a highlight, however the mix doesn’t do them any favors.

something i think would really help the album is if, in true punk fashion, the songs were shorter. m3tamorphosis does not need to be five minutes! also can't see why he didn't throw "@MEH" into the record either, it's probably his strongest track since *wokeuplikethis imo

“metamorphosis” is the only track that drags, imo

i kinda wish cudis presence was reduced to just the humming but its always a highlight for me anyway

another thing this record reminds me of is the farrah abraham album, especially in the moments where he gets emotional talking about his brother

i feel like i don't quite understand what the ppl who like this album are getting out of it... i feel like i've mostly read posts about how it's forward thinking or w/e but not much about what it is about the music, lyrics, performance etc that is actually enjoyable/memorable. it feels very well branded to me, mostly. there's some good songs on it but i found a lot of the leaked songs to just be catchier... i don't like anything on the record more than this

i think i can get w/ the album more if i think of it as evolutionary mf doom as opposed to, like, some magnum opus blockbuster rap album

to me ‘cancun’ just sounds like anything off his first album, whereas the album feels like an update of c. 2014 ‘sh!t‘ and ‘danny glover’ era of weirdo bangers (even if nothing on it comes close to the level of greatness of those 2). my fav part is the different voices. sometimes the combinations of the chorus of wheezing voice ad libs under baby voice is so grotesque and cacophonous i love it lol. can’t single out production on many tracks and i don’t think it would stand out with more conventional vox but it works and is v consistent. ‘teen x’ is def a highlight. a lot of the beats have snatches of fruity melody but also sound rough-hewn and busted; the ‘king vamp’ beat sounds like it was arbitrarily cut in half at a random second and then looped. lyrics is obviously the weakest part since it’s carti, there’s no ‘all of my cups are muddy/I fuck my bitches' buddies’ and none of his repetitions hit like future screaming ‘you ain’t fuck shit‘ but the relentlessness ‘when the sun goes down/yeah it’s time to creep’ is great. verse in ‘sky‘ is good too ‘im bout to dirty my cup/pour up some lean and get stuck’ but that’s one of the most conventional songs

i agree with that mostly except the production is very cool to me and i'd still love a lot of it even with more conventional vocals. i really love the blown-out game soundtrack sound and its all catchy enough to let him get away with doing whatever wild thing with his vocals that he feels like

‘not PLaying’ another beat highlight imo

i've grown to appreciate the lyrics, maybe because the constant mantra repetition hammered into my subconscious, or maybe it's a "i like how he says it" thing (for lines like "i wanted to be just like my brother, he was a damn thug")

i love how ‘teen x’ beat sets these looping squiggles of zaytovenesque melodies off each other where they’re slightly detuned and don’t perfectly line up so they clash in a way that’s playfully demented, really fits the vocals

The older leak stuff is way smoother and complacent, the new stuff is more shocking and confrontational, it’s a new mode for him which is exciting, esp considering I was getting kind of tired of the sameyness of the leak tracks. I like the more active, aggro tone; the way he makes his vocals cut in and out feels more alive and less drowsy than a lot of the leak stuff Imo... I don’t just think this is an interesting variation but makes his earlier stuff seem a bit plain

My first impression is that it’s good, but also disappointingly conventional compared to Whole Lotta Red

The guitar on Philly had me wondering if I was listening to a Cindy Lee sample (it isn’t but it’s fun to imagine!)

Also there are way too many guests on this thing

some of this is pretty good it's rather inconsistent overall and nowhere near as singular as whole lotta red, but realistically it was pretty unlikely to match wlr

agree that it’s too guest heavy, to the point that some like the thug song and the second uzi song, would’ve fit a lot better on those artists’ own projects

i feel like they were probably originally intended to be

i respect how abrasive "pop out" is but i don't think i really want to listen to it much

I don’t think I “get” Carti. His music sounds very sinister to me. I can appreciate it from that angle but I am surprised he has so much commercial appeal.

Washington Post review of Carti tour, and a buddy on Facebook who took his son and son’s pals both report that Carti is barely visible onstage on tour because it is immersed in smoke and fog, but the bass is thumping incredibly loud and Carti’s vocals come through as well plus there are lots of strobe lights
