Under Construction

Now, I have had a pint or two, this is true. And I'm only on the sixth track. But this Missy Elliot record album is sounding really, really, really good. Like to the extent where I'm not typing what I'm actually thinking about it cos it'll sound like stupid drunk hyperbole.

It's very very retro. It's very very not. It's...yeah. It's half past midnight. I'm going to stay up and play it again a couple of times.

Anyone else heard it?

Tom (Groke), Friday, 8 November 2002 00:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Info for UK posters - Mr CD on Berwick street has a load of French imports of it for £11 each.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 8 November 2002 00:30 (twenty-three years ago)

according to AMG, it is not in the stores here in the states until Nov. 12. I am excited.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Friday, 8 November 2002 00:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm excited too!

Sean (Sean), Friday, 8 November 2002 00:49 (twenty-three years ago)

its def. great so far (i'm on track 12). It also made me think about ILX.. there's a spoken interlude where missy goes "OH NO!" and then 30 sec. later Beyonce is going off about influence. It's a trip to hear Method Man appearing on his own throwback too.

Honda (Honda), Friday, 8 November 2002 00:54 (twenty-three years ago)

The last (listed) track is the most sentimental thing ever recorded. Best album ever. She keeps talking in between all the tracks explaining why she's doing it! It's going to turn the whole undie/mainstream/retro/progressive stuff on ILM on its head. God knows what I'll think of it tomorrow - I hope I like it just as much - but for first-listen thrills it's up there.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 8 November 2002 00:57 (twenty-three years ago)

"It's going to turn the whole undie/mainstream/retro/progressive stuff on ILM on its head."

Wouldn't it be fun if this happened in society, too?

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Friday, 8 November 2002 00:58 (twenty-three years ago)

(Haha I have now put the Trina album on and it's sounding JUST AS GOOD! So I think a) both are grebt; b) I am tipsy and happy and should go to bed for real instead of listening to my new CDs...)

Tom (Groke), Friday, 8 November 2002 01:04 (twenty-three years ago)

i've heard 2 trax on mp3 but i dunno what to make of this new oldskool referencing lark. i liked it better when tim was quoting his own tracks rather than dropping nods to the pantheon... or is this a history takeover rather than submission?

bob zemko (bob), Friday, 8 November 2002 01:08 (twenty-three years ago)

is "the legend" wot's under construction? or is it hiphop?

bob zemko (bob), Friday, 8 November 2002 01:10 (twenty-three years ago)

It's going to turn the whole undie/mainstream/retro/progressive stuff on ILM on its head.

Tom, why does it always have to be either/or? Why do you have to make pop what you accuse the supposed "other side" of being?

Why can't it just be why you like this particular records? Your praise would ring truer without that defensive note.

jack cole (jackcole), Friday, 8 November 2002 01:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Jack (yeah I didnt go to bed cos I wanted to play it again), I was listening to it while reading ILM and since lots of it is explicitly about the whole back-in-the-day thing that is what I thought about. I like it partly cos it shakes up (should have said that not 'turns on its head') *my* positions on stuff, not cos it confirms/denies anyone else's. It demolishes the "either/or" which I'd been sort of using as a best-fit model of my taste. i.e. I'd been working on an assumption of forward-looking=good; backwards-looking=stale. Along comes a record which explicitly does backwards-looking and I love it, so I have to re-value some stuff I think. Hence I get excited cos that doesn't happen enough.

It's not about anyone else, though I do think it'll affect other people on ILM similarly (some will hate it/think it boring etc.)

Tom (Groke), Friday, 8 November 2002 01:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Bob - if you had to pick takeover *or* submission it would be a takeover - the production is a mix of old skool (the beats sound like they were dug for not programmed) with new (they're treated and tweaked in ways that make you think this probably isn't the case).

Tom (Groke), Friday, 8 November 2002 01:41 (twenty-three years ago)

so far i can't help thinking it's to tim's detriment. but i'll be seeing senor CD tomorrow anyways

bob zemko (bob), Friday, 8 November 2002 01:55 (twenty-three years ago)

but then as yr **s suggest i dunno why it has to be an either/or thing

bob zemko (bob), Friday, 8 November 2002 01:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think its a matter of forward=good, at least for me -- in the case of things heavily reliant on past sounds, its a matter of the artist(s) making the sound they select from the past's buffet into their own. Looking back is fine as long as something is done with the glanceward back. For me, I suppose, the equivalent would be garage bands, the only ones I ever like are the one's willing to use the raw material they scavenge into their unique works (be it the Bassholes or Billy Childish or whatever).

jack cole (jackcole), Friday, 8 November 2002 03:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll have what Tom's having.

Mark (MarkR), Friday, 8 November 2002 03:53 (twenty-three years ago)

will let you know what I think as soon as I pick it up Fri aft.

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 8 November 2002 07:25 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Tim had hit a bit of a dead end with his future global funk stuff - though he's still doing that for other people, and the Missy album (second listening verdict - not the best album ever, sorry, but still really good and a highly recommended disc, most start-to-finish enjoyable thing she's ever done) might well be a one-off. The beats on it are quite hard and minimal, with enough squelchy tactile Timbaland sounds around that you know its him.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 8 November 2002 09:13 (twenty-three years ago)

What is it about the album that sounds "backward-looking"?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 8 November 2002 12:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Its use of samples. ;-)

nathalie (nathalie), Friday, 8 November 2002 12:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Lots of lyrical quotations from and references to old school hip-hop, plus a couple of remember-when tracks; plus a general back-to-basics vibe in Tim's beats.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 8 November 2002 12:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd been working on an assumption of forward-looking=good; backwards-looking=stale. Along comes a record which explicitly does backwards-looking and I love it, so I have to re-value some stuff I think
er, hurrah! is all I can think of at this point.

Now, if I can only get all of ILM to agree that merzbow = pop, I think we can all go home at last. ;)

If Missy's out in France, it must be out here too. I shall get it tomorrow. Or maybe right now! I haven't had lunch yet...

Jeff W, Friday, 8 November 2002 13:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I find that attempting to impose a best-fit model on your own tastes rarely works, as something will inevitably come along and smash it wide open again, leaving you to, as Tom said, suddenly re-evaluate a lot of other stuff. Although you could argue that this is all part of the fun.

I have yet to discover that seminal pan-pipe record, though.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 8 November 2002 13:34 (twenty-three years ago)

It is all part of the fun!

It's not imposing so much as it's something that naturally develops, for me at least.

i.e. if there were two hip-hop records, I'd heard neither, one was described as a great record with incredibly fresh production and new ideas, the other as an old skool tribute to the days when hip-hop rocked the block party, I'd guess I'd like the former more. But liking the latter more is exciting, raises more personal questions.

It's one of the reasons I liked Andrew WK so much, cos I'd got so used to not liking hard rock.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 8 November 2002 13:44 (twenty-three years ago)

The logical extension of this argument is that the next Travis/Coldplay will appear shortly and blow half of ILM away... hem hem.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 8 November 2002 14:25 (twenty-three years ago)

The new Travis/Coldplay, that is - not the next album by them.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 8 November 2002 14:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't know about that...

but "Work It" is the first video I've felt the need to tape since I was about 15. I know ILM's heard it all before on this one but, holy fucking fuck. Can't wait to hear the whole record.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Friday, 8 November 2002 15:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Tom: I got the same "take it back" vibe from the last missy album.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Friday, 8 November 2002 16:19 (twenty-three years ago)

"old skool joint" y'all. sterling otm.

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 8 November 2002 16:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Maybe it's just that this hammers it harder into my thick skull, or that it's more consistent than the last album, then. Isabel has my copy of Miss E so I can't check.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 8 November 2002 16:28 (twenty-three years ago)

I've only just started listening to it and I can pick out at least two or three great vocal moments from her already. Something about this first song reminds me of Prince's vocal arrangements. Hmm...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 8 November 2002 17:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Listening to it now. On track 4.

Lots of lyrical quotations from and references to old school hip-hop, plus a couple of remember-when tracks; plus a general back-to-basics vibe in Tim's beats

This is closest to how I'm perceiving it first listen, ie the trappings - add the images to the Cd booklet here - give the impression it's more retro than it really is. The beats couldn't come from any time other than 2002 really.

The chatting is great!

Jeff W (Jeff W), Friday, 8 November 2002 17:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh yeah, the elephant noise is still in there as well. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 8 November 2002 17:41 (twenty-three years ago)

!!!

(track 7)

Jeff W (Jeff W), Friday, 8 November 2002 17:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I think my mp3s are mixed up with some of the titles, which one is that? For me that's a pleasant enough ballad with some nicely creamy touches in the mix.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 8 November 2002 17:56 (twenty-three years ago)

The one about kittens, Ned

Just spotted this in the Missy Thank You's in the booklet:
"MARCELLO - good looking, you're a sweet gal!"

(s)he gets everywhere!

Jeff W (Jeff W), Friday, 8 November 2002 18:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Wow! There's influence. ;-) And yes, we're talking about the same track. There's a lot of subtle contrast going on in it I really like (works better for me than "Nothing Out There for Me").

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 8 November 2002 18:07 (twenty-three years ago)

So after making through it once, I say four definite duds, four definite classics and the rest in between. My favorite track is the one that Meth guests on, sounds like The W, only bettah!

Yancey (ystrickler), Friday, 8 November 2002 18:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Jesus the TLC song is awful.

Yancey (ystrickler), Friday, 8 November 2002 18:10 (twenty-three years ago)

There is one thing I'm definitely annoyed with now, that 'exclusive' bit. Her equivalent of X-Clan going on about 'vanglorious'...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 8 November 2002 18:11 (twenty-three years ago)

I totally concur, Ned. Using "This is a Missy exclusive" as her mic warmup is a dud. Are we to assume that when she doesn't start with that she's biting?

I dislike "Back in the Day" for the same reason. Why is she just telling us over and over that this is ye ole skool when it's already so obvious that it is? Those rhymes just aren't that interesting. The Jay-Z opening is smooth, but it goes on too long with those lines. (I might have that track title wrong)

Yancey (ystrickler), Friday, 8 November 2002 18:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Agree with Ned's last comment.

is "the legend" wot's under construction? or is it hiphop?

More the latter. But it's the attitude that's the target rather than the music.

The intention is clearly stated in the first bit of chat, but is underlined in the last (at the end of "Can You Hear Me"), which feels spookily pertinent now post the Jam Master Jay shooting.

In summary:
Good album. No more than two not-so-great tracks, I'd say. A lot more accessible than ...So Addictive.

Jeff W (Jeff W), Friday, 8 November 2002 18:24 (twenty-three years ago)

I like Jeff W.'s summary. Ain't changing the world, sounds damn good nonetheless.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 8 November 2002 18:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Okay, halfway through and I'm DYING. "P***ycat" is ASTONISHING. Ned belongs in the penalty box for that "creamy touches" remark. Really, this is best ballad EVER WRITTEN. It's "Rock The Boat" with lyrics!

The "vainglorious"/"The red, the black, and the green, SISSIEEEEEEEEES!" parts of the X-Clan album were great.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 8 November 2002 19:48 (twenty-three years ago)

This album just makes me smile. Like every sound makes me happy.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Friday, 8 November 2002 19:57 (twenty-three years ago)

NB: Missy has released exclusive remixes to both major chicago "urban" stations. Each of them has an extra verse/chorus where she praises the station. i.e. "b 96 keep you twerkin/them other stations can't work it... dance dance/keep it movin'/b 96 got the groove n'/keep it smoov yeah"

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Friday, 8 November 2002 20:12 (twenty-three years ago)

This is really a good album. Better than the Underworld album, easily.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 8 November 2002 20:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned belongs in the penalty box for that "creamy touches" remark.

But I meant that a positive thing!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 8 November 2002 20:24 (twenty-three years ago)

YOU KNOW WHY YOU ARE IN THE PENALTY BOX. Don't try to play innocent.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 8 November 2002 20:54 (twenty-three years ago)

"Horse Latin" = variation of Pig Latin. You insert "ilz" or "iz" into the middle of every word you say.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 10 November 2002 03:25 (twenty-three years ago)

what are they saying?

?!!!

d k (d k), Sunday, 10 November 2002 06:11 (twenty-three years ago)

gossip folks reminding me of the puppies = delight. not enough people have run with the 95 south/69 boyz/dis n dat torch

boxcubed (boxcubed), Sunday, 10 November 2002 23:44 (twenty-three years ago)

bc just the words "95 south" make me tingle

(don't forget "project pat"!)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 11 November 2002 00:49 (twenty-three years ago)

haha this reviewing it while you're still listening to it for the first time is fun, but after having absorbed it further over the weekend... I like it even more!

The "exclusives" thing doesn't bug me so much now (I think my initial negative reaction was down to kneejerk rockist tendencies: "hey, that's the tenth time U done that on the album, girl!" Once you start searching individual songs it doesn't nearly matter so much anymore). On the other hand, I've cooled a bit on the narratives, some of which seem unnecessarily defensive (and pre-emptive). Why say "I'm not apologising for this song/record"? Why not just let the songs stand for themselves?

Jeff W, Monday, 11 November 2002 10:51 (twenty-three years ago)

'people always say, "yo dat's too nasty" and "why yo mouth so vulguh? why you gotta sing all these nasty rekkids and all that?" but I be representin' for the ladies and we got something to say. we been quiet too long, ladylike, very patient. we ain't get mad when prince had his ass out. we thought he was gonna turn around to the front and have the front out, too. but, you know, that didn't happen.'

i like that.

i love the beyonce one. she rebukes her for being submissive to her controlling boyfriend.

i like the jay-z one.

'slide' is all hard and stuff. twankies. i love that.

'go to the floor' is good. rich people buy boats.

the tlc one is really hecka sad. chhhh. i don't even want to listen to that. i felt too sad to listen to it before the answering machine thing was done. it's just some silly song but it's still super-sad. ;_;

i've only listened to 'meat is murder' all the way through a few times, too. and it's even sillier, maybe. but it's just too much. it's silly but it's intense. actually, it's not that silly. i'm not sure what i mean by 'silly.' both of them are pretty serious, i guess. i don't know.

i don't know.

and the remix with 50 cent is dumb. he sounds dumb and i hate him. she says REEEEEEEEEEEEEEMIIIIIIIIIIIIIXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX forty-five seconds into the song! for gosh sakes, wasn't there a better time before then? i mean, it's almost a minute in. i don't mind people saying REEEEEEMIXXXXXXXX on the remix but this remix sucks and you didn't need to do it forty-five seconds in.

d k (d k), Monday, 11 November 2002 11:11 (twenty-three years ago)

rich people buy 'boats' or 'votes'? at first I thought the former, now I ain't so sure

zebedee, Monday, 11 November 2002 11:42 (twenty-three years ago)

what I'm noticing a lot is how electro the record is--that's part & parcel of the whole "retro" thing, but it's interesting how buzzy the beats are, very Kraftwerk (w/o the whole sped-up thing most '80s electro had to it), and yet they sound futuristic in a different way than the older stuff, not retro-futurismo at all, just like tomorrow will/would/might/could etc.

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 11 November 2002 16:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh man talk about retro.. the blatant ref. to Arnold Schwarzenegger in Kindergarten Cop took me back.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 11 November 2002 17:57 (twenty-three years ago)

"i 'kill at will' like solid ice." man, i couldn't love jay-z more right now.

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 11 November 2002 18:06 (twenty-three years ago)

whoops that's "solid water". haha, the joke doesn't really work otherwise.

(which i think jigga realizes, since even more hilariously, he clarifies a few lines later: "get it? ice cube."

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 11 November 2002 18:11 (twenty-three years ago)

and says it slowly so that we can get it, cos we're not as clever as he is. I love that moment, too--a joke he's letting us in on (the tone of voice, not the punchline so much)

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 11 November 2002 20:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Great line, I'm pretty sure I would have got it eventually but the explanation's even funnier. Tthe "REEEEEMIIIIIIX" bit is good too, the track's just the same as the single up to then, then there's a brief pointless guest rap, and after that it's just the same as the single again. Fantastically redundant, but you can't listen to "Work It" too many times.

I've only listened to this once, I thought I might be able to keep up buying it on the day of release but, oh no, you're all pretty much done and dusted. What's next, then?

Acrid bitterness aside, I love the block rockin' old school middle act and the photos to go with it, I'm predicting an amusing trend for old school boomboxes to go with your British Knights.

Mike (mratford), Monday, 11 November 2002 20:26 (twenty-three years ago)

there's a winking fr*mm* reference in one of the later songs, isn't there? (leading me to believe that missy sent the googlers). and jigga's DO YOU SEE moment is indeed great. i'm a tad underwhelmed, but i've yet to give it a proper listen.

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Monday, 11 November 2002 22:57 (twenty-three years ago)

oh and i love the talking.

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Monday, 11 November 2002 23:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Jay-Z's EPMD reference was even better, I think (wish I could quote it off the top of my head - only heard it once so far but it was something like "talk shit on your EP and you'll need an M.D."). Ha!

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 23:28 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm leaving work now, and making a beeline to buy the CD!! (then making a beeline to see Neko Case, but that's another story...)

Sean (Sean), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 01:25 (twenty-three years ago)

"this track is safe".

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 18:42 (twenty-three years ago)

haha I really thought that meant safe at first! I don't know, the youth of today with their strange slang terms...

Jeff W (Jeff W), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 18:53 (twenty-three years ago)

That's such an old slang term... I can't believe it's still used...

Jones, I seriously think Thomas may be my new favorite critic.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 19:44 (twenty-three years ago)

What the fuck is going on? I went into WHSmith's today (to buy a ring binder if you must know) and there was loads of copies of "Under Construction" sitting on the shelve. I thought it wasn't out 'til Monday and you lot had all either got promo copies or downloaded it. Was it out last Monday? I didn't buy it because it was £13.

Nick H, Wednesday, 13 November 2002 20:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, what is the name of the track that Gossip Folks cribs the chorus from?

I'd love to know this too. It's not the double dutch bit. It's what the girls on the school bus sync to.

Thanks for the help!

I <3 this album so mucho mucho

Darryl Strawberry (The Reverend), Tuesday, 23 September 2008 14:44 (seventeen years ago)

is it actually missy doing those harmony bits?

They're a '90s odd couple. And an odds-on choice for laughs. (blueski), Tuesday, 23 September 2008 14:46 (seventeen years ago)

half a decade on (!) i think i love 'gossip folks' even more than 'work it'. she sounds like a car screeching on tarmac and it is awesome.

ALSO this was otm:

(Haha I have now put the Trina album on and it's sounding JUST AS GOOD! So I think a) both are grebt; b) I am tipsy and happy and should go to bed for real instead of listening to my new CDs...)
