I just discovered them (Yeah, maybe Im a little late, but, eh), and fuck. Such an amazingly great band. I have yet to hear a bad song. Very original. I want to hug them all.

Yes, they are indeed rather splendid. What have you discovered, particularly? I'd recommend Juke-Box Alarm with all my heart.

And if you haven't found them already, go seek Komeda too, for similar loungey crunchy Krautpop thrills.

I was going to see them on the 16th, but I'm going to see Blondie instead.

Sean (Sean), Friday, 8 November 2002 03:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I was going to see them last night, but my girlfriend got stoned and refused to drive. It's ok--we saw Melt-Banana on Tuesday night and it was fab. I've been to a couple Stereo Total shows and they're always really fun. I've seen them get the Black Cat dancing, and DC kids are the unfunkiest.

That said, I can never get into their records.

Best band in the world.

Momus (Momus), Friday, 8 November 2002 04:44 (twenty-three years ago)

I had a couple of their early albums, and after playing them once or twice I packed them away, thinking they were too silly to waste time on. (How un-ILM of me.) But their songs kept popping back into my head. It was kind of frustrating, because I could never remember who did them: Pizzicato 5? Solex? Papas Fritas? Now, I've got all their other albums, too, and I've stopped caring whether they're too silly. Another thing I've discovered: Stereo Total CDs are the absolute best for staying awake driving in the wee hours. "Get down tonight. Woo!"

Fun live show.

[I predict Mary will post to this thread.]

bnw (bnw), Friday, 8 November 2002 06:29 (twenty-three years ago)

i wonder if Francoise will do an Exene Cervenka homage and talk shit about the Blondie show across town between songs. furore!! i saw them at Luna Lounge and Bretzel referred to their bassist as "Fidel Castro". afterwards they had go-go dancers. i saw them at Windows on the World, too. they were great. clumsy and beguiling. it was free but the drinks were like 10 bucks. the same week they played another free show at Other Music. they are like the kings of the free show.

Mary Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 8 November 2002 06:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Whoa, I just married Tracer! Bnw, of course I can't be posting to this thread, I am out at the Scratcher, mourning your departure... Lisa hugged Brezel Goring!!! Note: I wish that Brezel would sing more, I like his voice, very Serge-y, I like when they cover Serge (oh! I am so predictable!)...'Qui est in...Qui est out'

Mary (Mary), Friday, 8 November 2002 06:42 (twenty-three years ago)

it can happen just like that my dear *snaps fingers*... the next thing you know you're MARRIED! c'est la vie! c'est le mort! "bngggk bnnnngk bnnngk!"

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 8 November 2002 06:52 (twenty-three years ago)

You may never again read these three words from me - Momus is right. They have everything I want in a group...melody, intelligence, sexiness, humour, ENTERTAINMENT, European accents.

mary, i have just had an idea - to email!

gareth (gareth), Friday, 8 November 2002 10:17 (twenty-three years ago)

they were cooler as a full band. the last tour with just two people was just kinda boring except that momus opened and 4/5 of my friends agree: Gilbert and Sullivan meets Gallagher. plus despite stereo total still played 3 encores because montreal went nuts for them.
i will definetly go and see them again on this tour. their first three records rule.

ddd, Friday, 8 November 2002 21:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Best kitsch disco punk rock band out there --
I can't go see them without having a huge smile plastered on my face for their entire set. They're a little sloppy live, but it's completely charming isn't it?

sherri, Monday, 11 November 2002 02:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Gilbert and Sullivan meets Gallagher

Which Gallagher, Liam or Noel?

Blimey, 'The Pirates Of Burnage'...
