Rock Bands covering Soul, R&B, Doo Wop

Some examples:

Slade - If This World Were Mine (Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell)

Black Keys - Never Gonna Give You Up (Jerry Butler)

Paolo Nutini - Let Me Down Easy (Bettye LaVette)

White Stripes - I don't know what to do with myself (Dusty Springfield)

I know there's better examples out there but I can't think of any right now and I was in a cafeteria earlier this evening and I heard these in a row... it seemed like it was a theme. I actually like all of those safe for the White Stripes one which I just find annoying... but I find Jack White in general annoying.

Is Dionne Warwick i.e. the best know version of that song not thought of as Soul?

Stevolende, Wednesday, 31 May 2017 11:09 (eight years ago)

it's not just "walk on by", or "I just don't know what to do with myself" : in general, I'm not sure Bacharach/David's songs are rnb/soul.
I would say jazzy pop... or easy listening !

Haha I was thinking about Smith - Baby It's You earlier

dance cum rituals (Moka), Wednesday, 31 May 2017 13:09 (eight years ago)

The Beatles and Shirelles versions are more pop/R&B but Smith's version is imho a soul cover (which was oddly the highest charting one despite the popularity of the other two)

dance cum rituals (Moka), Wednesday, 31 May 2017 13:13 (eight years ago)

The Zombies have several too

Summertime (actually a jazz cover not soul, but the zombies version sounds more soul less jazz to me)

Goin out of my head

Cant Nobody Love You

Bring it on home to me/you've really got a hold on me

Gotta get a hold of myself

Haha in retrospective I should have made an exception on British Invasion bands.

Wait, what!? This is a cover? How did I not know this it's one of my favorite VU songs.

dance cum rituals (Moka), Wednesday, 31 May 2017 13:25 (eight years ago)

No I was remembering the name of the song that lifts the Hitch Hike riff. I couldn't think of the name when I initially posted.

AlXTC from Paris, Wednesday, 31 May 2017 14:11 (eight years ago)

MC5 I believe To My Soul which i think later morphed into Black to comm. But there are recordings of both from '68.

also from that year there are recordings of them doing James Brown medleys. Seems like that was something they did a lot of so wonder what is not released in any form.

Grateful Dead have several versions of Dancing in The Street available in live forms including '77 when it was released in studio form too. But it was something they were doing from early days.
Also Hard to Handle which is connected to Otis Redding. & Turn On your Lovelight which was a frequent jam in 67-70.

The Rationals and Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels were both doing hard rocking crossovers with soul.

Vanilla Fudge had You Keep Me Hanging On.
The Vagrants had Respect before Leslie West formed Mountain.

Rare Earth is a weird case -- a soul/rock band actually signed to Motown, whose had hits with two covers of Temptations songs that out-performed the originals, who were on the same label!

^^^ California boy getting his New Orleans Yat on...

J. Geils was always really good at digging up R&B obscurities like Dyke and the Blazers' "So Sharp."

Babe Ruth did some nice ones; I heard their versions of "We People Darker Than Blue" and "Private Number" years before I thought to track down the originals.

Gun Club apparently started out jamming on Slipping Into Darkness and Inner City Blues back in the days of the original Snowden/Dunning rhythm section. Not sure what direct covers they did later.

I really liked The Bad Seeds version of I Put A Spell On You. It's on their 1 Peel session as well as early live tapes.
Scientists did a good one too.

Last Kiss! Forgot about that one. Oddly enough it's Pearl Jam's highest song in the US charts (#2) even though it's a cover and sounds nothing like them.

it seemed like it was a theme

or a fundamental driving force of the industry for over half a century. a smaller list would be bands that didn't do this.

man I forgot about "Last Kiss" too. I remember hearing that all the fucking time.
