ex. Dionne Warwick's 'Two Ships Passing In The Night' (I'm not sure if this is her sole songwriting credit, but it's the only one I've come across):

Roger Daltrey only has two credits as the sole writer (there's a handful more with collaborators):

The Turtles Thread (Cuz I Couldn't Find One) A.K.A. I Finally Heard Turtle Soup.

scott seward, Wednesday, 31 May 2017 17:56 (eight years ago)

i think the turtles wanted to impress their producer ray davies and write their own kinks-like songs for turtle soup and be a real band instead of getting outside people. it worked really well. then they broke up.

scott seward, Wednesday, 31 May 2017 17:57 (eight years ago)

George Strait has 29 studio albums but is only credited with writing 5 songs

President Keyes, Wednesday, 31 May 2017 17:58 (eight years ago)

Come come, Scott, the Turtles wrote plenty of their own songs. Having said that, I'm not sure Mark Volman wrote anything. (xp)

Howard Kaylan certainly did though.

Elvis had a co-write on "All shook up", was there any more?

Mark G, Wednesday, 31 May 2017 18:02 (eight years ago)

Linda Ronstadt only has a couple of co-writes, including this Sesame Street album track:

Art Garfunkel was never a songwriter but he's credited with the "Canticle" part of "Scarborough Fair" (itself a rewrite of Simon's "The Side of a Hill") and did the montage "Voices of Old People" on Bookends. Never recorded any self-penned songs on any of his solo albums afaict.

heaven parker (anagram), Wednesday, 31 May 2017 18:30 (eight years ago)

Richard Manuel has a few self-penned songs on Band albums, Helm and Danko get a few co-writes. Ofc this was a big part of their beef with Robertson.

heaven parker (anagram), Wednesday, 31 May 2017 18:40 (eight years ago)

Supposedly Richard Manual just gave up writing around 1971, and Robertson has claimed that the last few songs he had to coax out of him.

"Come come, Scott, the Turtles wrote plenty of their own songs"

i guess i never thought of them as being big songwriters. i always thought their big hits were done by outside people. but i am not a turtlesologist. it just struck me when i first heard/had turtle soup that every song was by the group.

scott seward, Wednesday, 31 May 2017 18:44 (eight years ago)

John McVie has "Station Man" (w/Danny Kirwan) and "The Chain" (with the rest of that Mac lineup).

They were totally songwriters! So much so that when a relative got them to autograph a 45 of theirs for me they said they were pissed it wasn't one they wrote (it was "You Showed Me")

Sinatra apparently had six songwriting credits. who knew.

Mr. Success, This Love of Mine, I'm a Fool to Want You, Peachtree Street, and Take My Love.

This Love of Mine is great.

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 31 May 2017 18:46 (eight years ago)

XPS to self John McVie not really a singer though.

but of course: Tony Consiglio (né Anthony J. Consiglio; 1917–2008), Sinatra's boyhood friend and longtime right-hand man, claimed that Sinatra did not write the lyrics; but rather, as a condition for recording it – a condition that Sinatra made with his manager, Hank Sanicola – his name had to be included as lyricist, a practice that was once more common with publisher and record producers.

I suspect he didn't really write it. Sinatra had a weird way with words judging from interviews etc., don't think he had it in him to be a lyricist.

don't think he had it in him to be a lyricist.

He added "Jack!" to lines all the time. That's gotta count.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Wednesday, 31 May 2017 18:52 (eight years ago)

Elvis had a co-write on "All shook up", was there any more?

i don't think there was a lot of writing involved in that co-write.

fact checking cuz, Wednesday, 31 May 2017 18:58 (eight years ago)

Here's a weird one. Petula Clark wrote a fair number of songs, but none of her hits. But she did co-write "You're The One", which was an album track for her and later a hit for the Vogues.

The only song credited solely to Russell Mael that I am aware of:

Billie Holiday didn't write much, but she did manage make "Fine and Mellow" and "God Bless the Child" among them:

Would no longer say Dave Gahan rarely writes for Depeche Mode anymore, but it took him 11 albums to contribute anything, generally 3 songs per album (4 on the new one)

PaulTMA, Wednesday, 31 May 2017 19:19 (eight years ago)

James Dean Bradfield of the Manics wrote "Ocean Spray" I think that was his first one did he do more?

Mark G, Wednesday, 31 May 2017 21:19 (eight years ago)

Yes. 'I Think I Found It' on Postcards From a Young Man.

The Anti-Climax Blues Band (Turrican), Wednesday, 31 May 2017 21:23 (eight years ago)

So, two songs, and both decent. Funny...

Mark G, Wednesday, 31 May 2017 21:24 (eight years ago)

I know he did a solo album,but.

Mark G, Wednesday, 31 May 2017 21:25 (eight years ago)

Also, on the same subject, 'Some Kind of Nothingness' is a solo Nicky Wire composition!

The Anti-Climax Blues Band (Turrican), Wednesday, 31 May 2017 21:27 (eight years ago)

The only song credited solely to Russell Mael that I am aware of:

there are a couple of songs on the debut album that he gets solo credit for ('Roger' and 'Saccharin and the War'), but I think that's it? lots of songs with co-writing credit for both brothers, though

soref, Wednesday, 31 May 2017 21:35 (eight years ago)

'Pineapple" is great.

Mark G, Wednesday, 31 May 2017 21:37 (eight years ago)

Goes well on a pizza.

The Anti-Climax Blues Band (Turrican), Wednesday, 31 May 2017 22:39 (eight years ago)

Sice from the Boo Radleys gets co-credit for I think just 3 of their (early) songs

PaulTMA, Wednesday, 31 May 2017 22:42 (eight years ago)

Elvis had a co-write on "All shook up", was there any more?

Without checking, I'm pretty sure his cowrite was Love Me Tender

Dusty Springfield: four songs, all B-sides (according to answers.com)

SlimAndSlam, Thursday, 1 June 2017 00:59 (eight years ago)

did dagmar krause write any other songs? total shame because "in the sickbay" is great!

no lime tangier, Thursday, 1 June 2017 03:47 (eight years ago)

Just checked - "Love Me Tender" does have himself credited although he didn't actually write any of it. He did come up with "All shook up" as a title and suggested it to his cowriter. Two other songs from around that time, and that's it.

Mark G, Thursday, 1 June 2017 06:42 (eight years ago)

The ID Company record is great, one of my favourite Dagmar projects, actually, and it does make me wish she wrote more.

emil.y, Thursday, 1 June 2017 13:48 (eight years ago)

Holy shit, I had no idea! "I'm a Fool to Want You" is one of his best weepers imo
