Often I hear this stuff at neighborhood coffee shop, when they are playing one particular Pandora station, which I think is called Americana or American something. (Amerindie?)

Tennis sounds nothing like Raveonettes and their singer sounds nothing like Neko Case (I really like them though)

Yes, my description is kind of wide of the mark.

Found another attempt to describing this kind of stuff by ilx0r Lamp here: ILM'S TOP 77 ALBUMS of 2010 (NOW COUNTING DOWN THE TOP TEN)

i do think theres a strain or i guess subgenre of 'indie' that doesnt really get rep'd or mentioned in ilx polls. jangle-y, simple lo-fi guitar pop sort of stuff like wild nothing or beach fossils or seapony or tennis or whomever thats hardly an less accessible or obscure than rangda or emeralds or zola jesus or w/e. & it does feel like these bands have little to nothing to do w/ like the national or arcade fire style indie formally or emotionally.

i mean i like this type of music & voted for a couple of lo-fi indie albums i thought were special but it is mostly a tracks genre - all those cassettes and 7"s lol - but it fares poorly there too. idk its not like ilx eoy polls wld be 'better' if this stuff was better liked, but it is a real blind spot

My pick of this kind of stuff from last year (love this track, album is ok):

a man often referred to in the news media as the Duke of Saxony (tipsy mothra), Tuesday, 20 June 2017 15:20 (eight years ago)

Makthaverskan could definitely fit, though the singer's voice is more Charly Bliss than Neko Case

Both of those work, thanks.

Reminded that some of this stuff can have a Joy Division/New Order thing going on- clattery drums, high Hook-y bass lines.

Really thought of starting thread about Tennis but thought it might get lost among threads about the sport.

Something that wouldn't count would be Wussy, because they are closer to the classic rock wing of indie. Something that almost counts, the track, not the band (or the weird video), but doesn't because the vocals are too choral, too Euro, too ABBA, and not girl group belting is this:

tennis are so dull to me. they just radiate whiteness in a way that makes me want to put on any record that charted in 1973. also when i think of the raveonettes i think of music that's either gloomier or scruffier at the edges.

what about leggy? she-devils? stef chura?

maura, Wednesday, 21 June 2017 23:25 (eight years ago)

She-Devils yes, but not the other two.

Guidonian Handsworth Revolution (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 21 June 2017 23:52 (eight years ago)

Vocals seem to be a little too ironic, in Bob Dylan/B-52s sense.

Guidonian Handsworth Revolution (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 22 June 2017 00:21 (eight years ago)

The idea here is the juxtaposition of something that is more or less a conventionally pleasing pop vocal, the bigger the better, with a somewhat noisy/lo-fi/DIY track.

Guidonian Handsworth Revolution (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 22 June 2017 00:42 (eight years ago)

The above is not a value judgement, just an attempt to limn a thing.

No. Vocals too, um, ethereal.

Dum Dum Girls (particularly the ones produced by Sune).

black honey? teen? babeheaven?

maura, Thursday, 22 June 2017 19:43 (eight years ago)

Dum Dum Girls definitely. Not sure about any of the other three, maybe Black Honey.

was gonna offer a "whut" at the name of this thread, but then i read this:

wild nothing or beach fossils or seapony or tennis or whomever thats hardly an less accessible or obscure than rangda or emeralds or zola jesus

does that say the former group of bands is approximately as accessible and obscure as the latter group or am i reading it wrong?

alpine static, Wednesday, 7 March 2018 07:29 (seven years ago)

A lot of this stuff sounds like kite-era kirsty maccoll to me.

thomasintrouble, Wednesday, 7 March 2018 08:54 (seven years ago)

I'm also slightly confused by the thread title but if you like Seapony (which I do) a couple of them were previously in a band called Transmittens which are along the same lines.

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 7 March 2018 09:13 (seven years ago)

I really like Neko Case, and Seapony, but they don't sound similar and Seapony don't sound like Raveonettes at all -- I think the premise of the thread is a bit baffling.

the pinefox, Wednesday, 7 March 2018 11:49 (seven years ago)

I thought Raveonettes were kind of twangy 50s pastiche, in part?

Neko Case is country and is a great auteur, writer of strange structures etc - not really typical of indiepop.

the pinefox, Wednesday, 7 March 2018 11:50 (seven years ago)

three weeks pass...

Seems like one of my Daily Mixes is based on those times I have listened to these kind of artists, only it is fleshed out by other artists I wouldn’t put in this category, such as The Yeah Yeah Yeahs- even Spotify is confused by the thread title!

Rudy’s Mood For Dub (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 1 April 2018 03:32 (seven years ago)

Thread title was supposed to be shorthand for (usually retro) Lo-fi track plus Big Belter voice.

Yes, this definitely works

Rudy’s Mood For Dub (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 1 April 2018 03:42 (seven years ago)

Perhaps I could have called the thread Bands that sound like Suicide fronted by Syd Straw. Probably would have been equally confusing.

I didn’t totally understand that part of that post I quoted either but still felt that poster was pointing in roughly the same direction as I was thinking about.

The Daily Mix just delivered Shannon and the Clams, which is close but no cigar.

Rudy’s Mood For Dub (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 1 April 2018 04:06 (seven years ago)

Playlist just yielded La Sera, which totally fits

Rudy’s Mood For Dub (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 1 April 2018 04:21 (seven years ago)

this year's shannon and the clams record is very good (not in a way that fits this thread tho)
