Moka's 250 Favorite Songs of the 80's - A selection.

I'm currently compiling my 250 favorite songs of every decade since the 50's. I'm clicking shuffle and choosing the first 50 songs that appear for this poll.

Note: This is poll 5 out of 7. It's been kind of quiet lately so might as well do two of these.

Only one song per artist but covers/collabs/ghostwriting/sideprojects get a free pass.

I do not recommend listening to these as a playlist but here's the spotify link either way for the adventurous:

Yeah I know I'm still missing hundreds of songs. Fire recommendations and omissions away. The 80's are a very interesting decade for me because both the mainstream and the 'underground' music was really out there (particularly the latter), probably the most interesting decade in that regard... old genres were being mutated into new ones every month.

dance cum rituals (Moka), Wednesday, 21 June 2017 17:27 (seven years ago) link

It seemed like a decade were every artist was competing on who released the weirder concepts.

This being ILX, I predict New Order, The Cure and Bauhaus being the Top 3.

(voted 'A Forest')

Shriekback's "My Spine Is The Bassline" is all-time, so that. Could've voted for over a dozen of these and love the fact that "The Fish Needs A Bike" is on here. Blurt is an undiscovered treasure.

Fish Needs a Bike is a staple for my imaginary party playlist.

Eisbar is also excellent. Everyone listen to it now if you don't know it by now.

Also Stop Bajon and Bakerman.

My first thought, seeing 23 Skidoo was The Gospel Comes to New Guinea, which I'm now going to have to listen to.

Are we talking the Primavera version of Stop Bajon?

Yes! Although both versions work for me.

Pale Saints' "She Rides The Waves" would have gotten my vote. voting "Age of Consent" just over "A Forest."

i love that you have "Drive It All Over Me" on here. reminds me that i have that Ecstasy and Wine CD.

space chipmunk (Ye Mad Puffin), Saturday, 24 June 2017 02:00 (seven years ago) link

I'm picking Shinzo No Tobira because noone else will vote
for it and it's a mindblowing piece of japanese new wave.

"You're My Favorite Waste of Time" by a hair over "Stop It." Once again, Moka flags some of my all-time favorites which I didn't know anybody else still cared about.

I love Marshall Crenshaw so much! I think there was a year not that long agobwhen I heard that song almost every day. There is something very charming about it, how it sounds like it was completed in an hour.

Would love to read your own lists if you have any.

dance cum rituals (Moka), Saturday, 24 June 2017 15:41 (seven years ago) link

I will take any opportunity I can to vote for the Durutti Column, thank you very much.

Austin, Saturday, 24 June 2017 16:14 (seven years ago) link

Lots of obvious songs not here and lots of the things here aren't particularly obvious choices (to me anyway). I had to google it, but as I thought I remembered, yes, Crash Course in Science was a Philadelphia band. I probably will vote Cybotron but I might listen to some of the songs I don't recognize, first.

Yay, I wasn't the only one to vote for 'Otis.'

Austin, Friday, 7 July 2017 02:52 (seven years ago) link

So in the end i did not vote for the winner but i was very close. I am always surprised how much ilm loves new order, i like them too but not as much. and additionally age of consent is not even in my top ten of new order.
