Since this very underrated album fared so poorly in the Prince artist poll we had on here back in 2011, I thought it was time this album got its due!

Attack ships on fire off the arms of Orion.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Friday, 23 June 2017 00:06 (eight years ago)

First two tracks are pretty unbeatable but I went with "The Future"

Acid Hose (Capitaine Jay Vee), Friday, 23 June 2017 01:15 (eight years ago)

"Electric Chair," no contest, though most of this album rocks.

lemon crush

Howard Stern had the best line in his Prince eulogy last year: "I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that Prince made the greatest motion picture soundtrack of all time, and that's a controversial statement, because most people didn't like the Batman movie."

flappy bird, Friday, 23 June 2017 01:44 (eight years ago)

This is actually a far harder choice for me than I thought... at first I thought 'Scandalous', but then 'The Future' and 'Electric Chair' are both (rightly) highly regarded on here... what about the underrated 'The Arms of Orion', or 'Partyman' which has grown on me a lot over the last couple of weeks? Or the absolutely batshit 'Batdance'? Or, christ, 'Vicki Waiting' and 'Lemon Crush', which both rule?

Only one I wouldn't consider voting for is 'Trust', which did actually appear in the movie...

The Anti-Climax Blues Band (Turrican), Friday, 23 June 2017 11:02 (eight years ago)

There are about 5 tracks I could earnestly vote for on here, guy says electric chair but I'm gonna relisten

or at night (Jon not Jon), Friday, 23 June 2017 12:53 (eight years ago)

Gut not guy

or at night (Jon not Jon), Friday, 23 June 2017 12:53 (eight years ago)

There is no guy telling me to vote electric chair

or at night (Jon not Jon), Friday, 23 June 2017 12:54 (eight years ago)

I have to vote "Lemon Crush" to honor how I felt about this album when I first got it but every song on here is great except "Partyman".

a butt groove but for feet (DJP), Friday, 23 June 2017 13:09 (eight years ago)

I didn't like the movie and I didn't like the album at the time. I was not a very popular 4th grader.

This album > The Black Album

The Anti-Climax Blues Band (Turrican), Friday, 23 June 2017 21:24 (eight years ago)

maybe

this doesn't have Bob George on it though

on the plus side, it doesn't have anything as crappy as Dead On It on it

Οὖτις, Friday, 23 June 2017 21:25 (eight years ago)

Yeah, this doesn't have 'Bob George' on it, but as a front-to-back album experience it's far more enjoyable, and darker too.

The Anti-Climax Blues Band (Turrican), Friday, 23 June 2017 21:32 (eight years ago)

for sure

or at night (Jon not Jon), Friday, 23 June 2017 21:41 (eight years ago)

The second part of 'Batdance' makes me chuckle a bit in its sample choices etc. "Stop the press, who is that?" ... "Vicki Vale, I like" ... "BAT-MAAAAAN!" followed by "ooh yeah, ooh yeah, I wanna bust that body!" makes me laugh for some reason. Probably because it's Prince not being able to resist being Prince.

impossible for me not to vote "Partyman", that scene was the first Prince I ever heard in my life, this album was my first album ever

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 23 June 2017 22:14 (eight years ago)

I don't like any of these tbh but love this performance of it

ha I have a comp DVD of Prince TV performances and that is p much the last one before he starts to look not quite so into it/actively bored/disengaged

Οὖτις, Friday, 23 June 2017 23:06 (eight years ago)

It's a fuckin' brilliant performance!

The Anti-Climax Blues Band (Turrican), Friday, 23 June 2017 23:15 (eight years ago)

Yeah, it's intetesting you should say that, Shakey, especially since post-Batman and with the NPG, Prince put more emphasis on the live band/live musicianship than he'd ever done before and re-cast himself as a JB-style bandleader.

The Anti-Climax Blues Band (Turrican), Friday, 23 June 2017 23:20 (eight years ago)

Patrice Rushen on keys!

Acid Hose (Capitaine Jay Vee), Saturday, 24 June 2017 00:04 (eight years ago)

Voted for 'Scandalous'

The Anti-Climax Blues Band (Turrican), Saturday, 24 June 2017 12:29 (eight years ago)

the jam at the end of the unreleased 12" "vicki waiting", so good!

Rodney Stooksbury for President (rushomancy), Saturday, 24 June 2017 12:54 (eight years ago)

This was a great era for B-sides too: 'Sex', '200 Balloons', 'Feel U Up', 'I Love U In Me' etc.

The Anti-Climax Blues Band (Turrican), Saturday, 24 June 2017 19:44 (eight years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Wednesday, 28 June 2017 00:01 (eight years ago)

one of the best revelations that came out last year was that Batdance was originally a remix of 200 Balloons and they pretty much just left it the way it was, for the single release.

piscesx, Wednesday, 28 June 2017 00:26 (eight years ago)

I think you can tell that 'Batdance' came from '200 Balloons' (which I'm sure was actually meant to be on the album to begin with but got dropped for some reason or other) - I remember reading somewhere that Prince thought that it sounded like '200 Balloons' came from 'Batdance' even though it was the other way around, but I disagree.

The Anti-Climax Blues Band (Turrican), Wednesday, 28 June 2017 00:43 (eight years ago)

If Prince had never recorded another note of music after the Batman period, it would have been a great way to go out. There was absolutely no chance of that happening, though.

The Anti-Climax Blues Band (Turrican), Wednesday, 28 June 2017 00:45 (eight years ago)

Was listening to some of the 12" mixes earlier today. "Trust" is still just okay at length but "Vicki Waiting" is really great

or at night (Jon not Jon), Wednesday, 28 June 2017 00:50 (eight years ago)

Vicki didn't laugh at all

doug watson, Wednesday, 28 June 2017 00:52 (eight years ago)

I love 'Scandalous', but the 19 minute suite, although well put together and featuring some stunning vocal work on the second part and great guitar work on the third part, is a bit much!

The Anti-Climax Blues Band (Turrican), Wednesday, 28 June 2017 01:01 (eight years ago)

Dave Weigel, of all people, noted today was the fourth anniversary of this Charlie Jane Anders piece

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 28 June 2017 16:16 (eight years ago)

Chances are most of us have seen the 1989 Batman movie at least once. But what if you'd only ever heard the soundtrack album by Prince? What would you think the plot of the movie was? Basically, it's the story of Batman's nemesis Partyman, and his ultimate weapon: the Lemon Crush.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 28 June 2017 16:17 (eight years ago)

I would love a comic book adaptation of this.

Acid Hose (Capitaine Jay Vee), Wednesday, 28 June 2017 17:25 (eight years ago)

Ha, I'd never seen that piece before... I kinda half-wish that was the actual plot of the film.

(xpost lol!)

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 29 June 2017 00:23 (eight years ago)

'The Arms of Orion' was robbed, but this kinda proves just how strong a release this is.

The Anti-Climax Blues Band (Turrican), Thursday, 29 June 2017 17:08 (eight years ago)

three months pass...

Man, 'The Arms of Orion' is such a beautiful song... Prince was still on fire during the Lovesexy and Batman eras.
