Hate to say this, but I'm actually kind of enjoying this track. I'm not going to pretend to know the lingo about "the beats" or "his flow" or whatever, but the punctuating strings and reverby guitar samples are atmospheric and ace. Me likey.

What say the experts?

Dear Alex, you've been saying this about half the r'n'b/hip-hop songs of the past year or two! Why not just finally give in? :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 8 November 2002 17:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, Ned, for every track like this that I actually warm to, there are about three dozen that make me fuckin' foam at the mouth and pound my fists into bloody pulps against the ground. For example, I just heard/saw the vid for the new Angie Martinez single, and that only makes me want to slurp the cranial casing out of someone's skull and use their hollowed-out pancreas as case for my sunglasses. Likewise, any mention of Jay-Z (let alone the endlessly eulogized Tupac or Notorious B.I.G) instantly puts me in a foul(er) frame of mind.

Yeah, but that happens with a lot of the experts, as you say, around here too. You don't think they hands-down love everything, do ya? Just watch Dan get mad at the mention of Ja Rule or Ashanti!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 8 November 2002 17:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Likewise, Ja Rule makes me ashamed to be of the same species as the diminutive rapper.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 8 November 2002 17:58 (twenty-three years ago)

when Nas started talking about this track sounding "old school" and "real" i really paid him no mind, but then the first time i heard this on the radio, i really thought it was some obscure mid-90's track, not the new single i'd heard about, until it got to the chorus and realized what it was. good stuff.

still, i'll take all the railing on about "realness" and putting down people who make R&B tracks with a big big grain of salt coming from Irv Gotti's new best friend.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 8 November 2002 19:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Extra! Extra! Nelly's new single reiterates sex-liking stance.

The Onion, Saturday, 9 November 2002 01:55 (twenty-three years ago)

It's the fuckin' hotshit. I like Jay-Z a lot but dude been bested by the god son. Jigga has to bring in a Destiny Child and cover Tupac's catchiest song (Gift and the Curse seems to have its deck stacked with cameos galore and not cool ones:Lenny Kravitz?) while Esco simply reasserts his raw power. Clear case of one upmanship by the underdog. That final part when the track cuts away and Nas throws down acapella style, losing conciousness...fuck yeah.

Theodore Fogelsanger, Tuesday, 12 November 2002 00:10 (twenty-three years ago)

alex, your original post strikes me as very odd (the stuff about the 'lingo') considering that you seem to have heard more rap than I have.

Josh (Josh), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 04:11 (twenty-three years ago)

the nas song, its not very good is it!! comparing it to angie martinez isnt even close to fair, thats one of my fav singles of the year or ever!! i admit i got it for fabo : ) : ) : )

ep, Tuesday, 12 November 2002 09:20 (twenty-three years ago)

I like it but Nas sounds like he's drowning or suspended or something in the production and it all sort of begs for more dynamism. On Stillmatic he narrated backwards and did the dramatic 'One Mic' ebb/flow thing and now he psyches you out w/ gunshots on a would-be hook... almost gimmicks but I'm thinking it's still executed right enough here.

Honda (Honda), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 09:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Ethan I honestly don't see what you're getting out of that Angie Martinez track. I mean, it's nice and all, but...

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 11:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Try living in NYC and *NOT* hearing any hip hop, Josh.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 17:35 (twenty-three years ago)

i dunno its just so totally beautiful, like all the prettiness of the beenie man janet track but faster and more headrushy

I suppose there is a significant difference between hearing and listening, alex

For example, I just heard/saw the vid for the new Angie Martinez single, and that only makes me want to slurp the cranial casing out of someone's skull and use their hollowed-out pancreas as case for my sunglasses.

i did a remix of this once back when i was MAKING BEATS in college. i think it wasnt bad. no mark on the original obv

deej, Friday, 18 September 2009 18:05 (sixteen years ago)

for some reason i thought it was a good idea to remix songs that already had iconic & incredible beats ... pretty dumb in retrospect.
