Quite a lot of the music released on On U Sound in the 80s would fall under this heading

I'm not an On U expert (I've only got a few compilations) but Sherwood At The Controls vol 2 and Science Fiction Dancehall Classics have a bunch of good examples of this sound

I feel like Sherwood is really a nexus for a lot of this stuff. He produced Twitch and parts of Pretty Hate Machine, his Depeche Mode remixes were really influential, and apparently a lot of the classic drum sounds came off his Fairlight.

I would like to thank everyone who has participated in this thread from the bottom of my heart. This style of music is near and dear to my heart, possibly as close to a "default" musical style for me as it's possible for me to have, and I love that others are into it as well and throwing out names I've either meant to get up on but never got around to or have never heard before. The names I know well are all welcome reminders for things I've neglected, in some cases for close to 20 years (that's the last time I remember listening to Test Dept). Thanks for indulging my nostalgia fit and spurring me to explore some stuff.

I don't like everything on this list of new EBM albums, but the first two are great, especially Multiple Man.

I keep going "Oh yeah, Test Department too!" with each name check. I listened to this stuff way more than I realized. Though I've really enjoyed the Sherwood comps from the last few years, which introduce still more acts I wasn't familiar with.

I agree Sherwood is a nexus point here; discovering him in high school was a crystallizing moment for my musical tastes.

I thought it had a better hit/miss ratio than Colin Newman's solo work, when I discovered it in the early 90s, but I favored Lewis Wire over Newman Wire (and Lennon over McCartney). With all the ex-Wire solo/duo material, I think some QC would have improved the consumer experience.

in '85 my girlfriend and I drove into LA to try to get into the Test Department show at Club Lingerie, which was 21+; I was 17, she was 19. we didn't get in, so we walked around H'wood smoking cigarettes.
