My favourite band from when I was 13.

Seventh Son of a Seventh Son was the third album I ever got, I remember drawing pictures of Eddie in art class, religiously reading the lyrics and playing air guitar, writing their name on my bag, my first band t-shirt, buying metal hammer, and saving up my pocket money to buy their back catalogue, my mum even got me "the Adventures of Lord Iffy Boatrace for Christmas" I read it in a day...

jel -- (jel), Friday, 8 November 2002 20:13 (twenty-three years ago)

the " should be after Boatrace.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 8 November 2002 20:16 (twenty-three years ago)

i have this great tape i found at the salvation ary called the Very Best of Iron Maiden. the cover has them in the desert like on mopeds or something (powerslave pics??) and the tracklisting kicks so much ass. it must be a bootleg because i cant find any info on the label or the ctlg number ANYwhere on the net. it has LIVE Killer's era trax from a pub or something! anyway steve harris and niko mcbrain are the best rythym section EVER.

chaki (chaki), Friday, 8 November 2002 20:22 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah Steve Harris is great, the songs he wrote are the ones when you can really hear the click click metal bass.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 8 November 2002 20:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I slept on Heavy Metal for a long time, to busy being a punk I guess. Iron Maiden were a fantastic band. They never made an out & out bad record. The Dual guitars the thumping bass, hot damn! I love that goofy comic book sense of fun that Maiden had. Just really great simple rock & roll.

"Aces High" is the single greatest song to sing at the top lungs at 3am in your underwear...

"The Trooper" is their masterpiece though.

Juan (Juan), Friday, 8 November 2002 20:30 (twenty-three years ago)

actually 7th Son is the LAST good IM record imo

chaki (chaki), Friday, 8 November 2002 20:33 (twenty-three years ago)

They never made an out & out bad record.
You haven't heard Fear Of The Dark then...

Siegbran (eofor), Friday, 8 November 2002 20:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Haha, "Weekend Warrior" is a truly terrible song!

original bgm, Friday, 8 November 2002 21:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I agree with Chaki. "Bring your Daughter to the Slaughter" was when the cracks started to appear, but I was really happy that it got to number one.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 8 November 2002 22:10 (twenty-three years ago)

iron maiden approved our record contract for us. this is actually a true story! our bassist's husband used to work for them, and they checked it out for us as a favour. he gets xmas cards from them and everything. a very eddie christmas, etc.

kate, Friday, 8 November 2002 22:15 (twenty-three years ago)

wow! a Christmas card from Iron Maiden would be so great!!

jel -- (jel), Friday, 8 November 2002 22:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Queen G (Queeng), Saturday, 9 November 2002 10:21 (twenty-three years ago)

They played The Trooper intra-band at a Scissorfight gig I went to last night.
It was still awesome...

meirion john lewis (mei), Saturday, 9 November 2002 12:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Eddie is one of the hidden characters in Tony Hawk 4! He has some crazy moves too.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Monday, 11 November 2002 03:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Piece of Mind and Powerslave are straight up classic. They always had such great production too, it still sounds very modern, especially for being done in the middle of the fucking 80s.

Also Brave New World is probably the best 'comeback' album by a metal band ever.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 11 November 2002 05:13 (twenty-three years ago)

_Powerslave_ is so classic it isn't even funny. "Aces High" = one of the secret great songs of the universe.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 11 November 2002 16:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Jesus H. Christ on the Powerslave drop. The song itself is so classic it hurts. Two Minutes to Midnight tho. And I also like on the live version of Fear of the Dark when the band bring it down and Bruce sings "Fear of the Dark" then says to the hordes beneath him "you", and they roar out "Fear of the Dark" and he says "yes," all dark and mysterious like. Yes? Yes??? Hahahahahahahaha. What the fuck is that supposed to mean? Sorry. For some reason that really tickles my toes.

Roger Fascist (Roger Fascist), Monday, 11 November 2002 17:06 (twenty-three years ago)

My friend in Gr 5 was obsessed with them. His drawings of Eddie were all over his wall. For art class projects he'd draw desolate landscapes with barren trees and skeletons on the ground with Eddie stalking the ruins. My Bon Jovi-loving self was a little intimidated by their name and image and reputation at first but then I heard them and realized that they were just all about pretty melodies. I think "The Wasted Years" was my favourite or one of them at the time. "Powerslave" too (Keith did an air band to that one.) To listen to them now you have to overlook how squeaky clean and light and prancey everything sounds and just listen for the melodies. "Hallowed Be Thy Name" and "Flight Of Icarus" are excellent.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Monday, 11 November 2002 19:39 (twenty-three years ago)

I've only heard Anton Maiden's synthpop version of "Fear Of the Dark" but it sounds like it would be a great song.

I would like an Iron Maiden Xmas card.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 11 December 2003 04:29 (twenty-two years ago)

There's a pretty acoustic cover of The Number of The Beast on the soundtrack to 'Spun' -- by, I think, that guy from the Smashing Pumpkins. It's a total rip-off of what mark Kozelek did with that AC/DC covers album, but it's still neat.

Listening to A Matter of Life and Death right now. Wow, people! Brave New World was great in its own way, but this sounds a lot more like mid-'80s Maiden. I'm honestly thrilled by it.

i got "the early years" a 2-dvd thing from netflix in the mail yesterday and watched 30 min of concert footage from a gig in late '80 or '81 (copyright) from a place called 'rainbow'? where they played iron maiden the song. it was paul di'anno, adrian smith and clive burr with dave murray and steve harris. they looked so much like fuckin spinal tap! my mouth was open when i wasn't head-banging. so awesome! can't wait to see the rest of this thing

Early Years is great! You are in for a treat and a half. But 'Beast Over Hammersmith' blows Rainbow away. Hearing/seeing Bruce with full pipes back then...glorious.

That guy could pull off drum fills like no other. I remain a big fan of Nicko's, but Clive really did bring a lot of personality to those early Maiden songs.

A. Begrand, Wednesday, 13 March 2013 21:49 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah Nicko is terrific. I do think there was something special about Clive's drumming though (possibly sheer nostalgia for him talking but I'd like to think not) - I feel like he helped to set the speed and the punk feel of that first album and helped informed their early style through full-out metal transition with Dickinson and NOTB. I don't know if you could do that with just any drummer.

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 13 March 2013 22:01 (thirteen years ago)

They did "Clansman" last year as well so it's become a bit of a staple I think.

Oh Well, wherever, wherever you are,
Iron Maiden's gonna get you, no matter how far.
See the blood flow watching it shed up above my head.
Iron Maiden wants you for dead.

stirmonster, Monday, 21 October 2024 16:27 (one year ago)

Killers was my first Maiden album. It still rules. RIP.

(Also, related by material, I've only just discovered *Beast Over Hammersmith*. Holy shit!)

I would prefer not to. (Chinaski), Monday, 21 October 2024 16:34 (one year ago)

This probably has less potential for controversy than my post above about the two Dickinson eras, but: I think the Di'Anno albums are still the best records they ever made. They were tough and grimy with him in a way they could never be with Bruce

JRN, Monday, 21 October 2024 16:39 (one year ago)

i think that’s true for a lot of ppl who maybe find Bruce a little much idk

ppl say it semi regularly & it’s not like fighting words, its ultimately personal taste

but in retros D’ianno

werewolves of laudanum (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 21 October 2024 17:00 (one year ago)

ugh

but to be fair, in hindsight D’Ianno was never going to be the singer that takes them through 4 decades plus

like he’s working on a smaller canvas & that limits what the band can do too

it sounds cool, i agree, i love his voice and those 2 albums rule— but “better” comes with a hell of a lot of qualifiers imo

werewolves of laudanum (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 21 October 2024 17:05 (one year ago)

i think it’s unfair to make it a binary of better/worse

theyre completely different types of singers with different skillsets & they can totally exist side by side for our enjoyment :)

Even though I grew up on a steady of diet of Powerslave, Live After Death, & Somewhere in Time, his gruff delivery & the band's primordial thudding on early stuff like "Running Free" and "Murders in the Rue Morgue" kind of stillisIron Maiden to me, RIP Di'Anno, obv he wasn't as suited to material that came after him, where they really became a different sort of band, but those two records with him are peak NWOBHM greatness

He had a rough life, but what an impact he made on those two colossal records. That East End snarl of his, nothing like it.

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 21 October 2024 19:09 (one year ago)

When I first became a Maiden fan there was nearly as much Di'Anno material available as there was Dickinson material, so me and my friends had a lot of fights about who was better. I eventually came to prefer Di'Anno, probably because I began to like punk rock too. RIP.

Raising Azure Asia (President Keyes), Monday, 21 October 2024 19:12 (one year ago)

those two records really changed my life. I love Iron Maiden throughout the years but when I heard those, after I'd heard Number and Piece, a sense of metal's depth and range was clearer to me. and the fuckin hooks. Di'Anno had an ear for a chorus hook, one for the ages.

J Edgar Noothgrush (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Monday, 21 October 2024 20:44 (one year ago)

obv he's the gruff belter to bruce's operatic thing but i find his clean, melodic singing here to be very affecting and almost touchingly naive in a way

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_fkD-jzgMXE

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 21 October 2024 22:02 (one year ago)

i like what the guy contributed very much and love the era of maiden he emblemizes, but there's a lot of "the first and best maiden singer has died" today, and it comes from people who say they're all about metal and maiden now, but who very obviously looked down on maiden, metal and metalheads in the 80s.

veronica moser, Tuesday, 22 October 2024 00:00 (one year ago)

and that is true, UMS, that at the time he and thus surely Harris were invested in projecting a hard man/ world weary POV, and the music makes it clear that it was transparently but touchingly not so.

veronica moser, Tuesday, 22 October 2024 00:11 (one year ago)

xpost yeah otm i think there is a lot of truth to that

werewolves of laudanum (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 22 October 2024 00:14 (one year ago)

The first two Maiden albums are really good. But if they'd never changed vocalists, they would have never gotten bigger than, say, Motörhead. When you listen to Di'Anno's post-Maiden work, his limitations (vocal, creative) become very apparent very fast.

Instead of create and send out, it pull back and consume (unperson), Tuesday, 22 October 2024 00:58 (one year ago)

Yeah I only care for the first two records nowadays but clearly they made the right choice in binning him off and getting Brooce in. Also he was completely unreliable.

joe meek's cutoff (Matt #2), Tuesday, 22 October 2024 01:13 (one year ago)

yeah that’s what i was half-saying upthread - there’s only so far you can go with that. It is sort of self-limiting

genuine shock when i saw that. A shame but unsurprising. Hopefully he pops up for a song or two at least at the big London 50th anniversary show next summer?

Hmmmmm (jamiesummerz), Saturday, 7 December 2024 17:45 (one year ago)

Nicko did have a stroke in early 2023. He recovered nicely and adapted quite well, he changed his mechanics to minimize arm movement. I saw Maiden in September 23 and October 24, and he held his own very well.

But time catches up to all of us. I remember Rod telling me years ago that Nicko's age was the one big concern when it came to planning, because they plan things years in advance. This seems like a lovely way for Nicko to end his 42 year run. He's a true gentleman, the kindest fellow, and will be missed.

(also it would not surprise me at all if Maiden indeed keep it in the family regarding a new drummer)
