Is the new one any good?

Frederik B, Thursday, 20 July 2017 10:18 (seven years ago)

I've only heard a couple of tracks - but from what I've heard, no. I'll have to give it a listen and refresh my memory on the two albums before, too. I still rate their first two albums highly, though!

The impression I got from what I heard of the new stuff was that they were trying to do their version of disco/'80s funk.

Going missing, acoustic cut

jk rowling obituary thread (darraghmac), Thursday, 20 July 2017 11:04 (seven years ago)

For me, it's a tie between 'Apply Some Pressure', 'Going Missing', 'Once, A Glimpse' or 'Acrobat', where Paul Smith sounds eerily like Midge Ure on the chorus.

LIMASSOL!

"Going Missing"

Yeah, I think it's 'Going Missing' for me, too - still one of their best tracks. I still like this album a lot, and would happily rep for the follow-up, which admittedly I found a bit of a grower.

I really like a handful of songs on that album. I don't think they ever realized their potential tbh

Acrobat is like some 00s landfill indie version of Tindersticks Marbles so wins by default. Going Missing is great too though. Not listened to this album in full since I was a teenager and will likely change this soon.

Maxïmo Park weren't "landfill indie", though - this album pre-dates the first Arctic Monkeys album and the band were part of the same wave of bands as Franz Ferdinand, Bloc Party, The Futureheads etc.

"Landfill indie" only happened because record companies shat themselves and saturated the market with substandard product due to the success of the Arctic Monkeys.

Landfill indie happened in 1996 m8

jk rowling obituary thread (darraghmac), Friday, 21 July 2017 21:35 (seven years ago)

A similar thing happened post-Oasis in the '90s, yes. There were far, far, far more "landfill indie" bands though, hence the term.

WE LOOK OUT TOWARDS THE SEA, THE COAST IS ALWAYS CHANGING!

The Anti-Climax Blues Band (Turrican), Saturday, 22 July 2017 01:04 (seven years ago)

i think now i'd default to "apply some pressure" or "the coast is always changing" ... the slow ballady ones have aged better than the manic ones. but i'm gonna vote for "now all i'm over the shop" bcuz that was my fav when i was 17.

J0rdan S., Saturday, 22 July 2017 07:23 (seven years ago)

i didn't realize until now that both this album and the 1975 have like short interludey songs that specifically emphasize the phrase "lost my head"

J0rdan S., Saturday, 22 July 2017 07:25 (seven years ago)

also i guess the chorus of "apply some pressure" is what i'm thinking of when i talk about a slower song, the verses are pretty frantic

damn "going missing" is still good. i hear more 90s rock in that now than i did back when i was first listening to this album.

J0rdan S., Saturday, 22 July 2017 07:27 (seven years ago)

this band's fashion sense was very weird

J0rdan S., Saturday, 22 July 2017 07:28 (seven years ago)

i really fucked with "our velocity' back when it dropped. i just listened to again for the first time in a long time and the bridge on that song is still amazing

J0rdan S., Saturday, 22 July 2017 07:31 (seven years ago)

Ah yeah, the "shit combover eventually covered with a hat" look. I'm glad I heard this band before I knew what Paul Smith looked like.

We've not yet had a single obligatory mention of jumping, which I believe played a large role in this record's vocals.

Really good album, and there's no reason why they couldn't make something as good as this again. One problem is, they eventually seemed to decide Maximo Park meant only this... this same sound with little change. But, didn't they once release a bunch of experimental B-sides about particular people? Or did I dream that? The latest album has much to teach us – like, it's really hard to write well about British politics in a song. Maybe he could try metaphor or something. (It wasn't Maximo, but close enough: "Surfing on the Void" was a great track with Sarah Suri last year.)

From A Certain Trigger Ballot as they'd probably call it nowadays – missed the poll, but "I Want You to Stay" is my highlight, it builds beautifully.
