i've been slowly working my through the catalog of these bands over the past month. i should complete the tour in 2 weeks, giving me one more week to make the agonizing decision

There's a song I love on Urge Overkill's big album: "Back on Me."

I'll just reiterate that UO should be the obvious choice here because they are great and The Strokes are not. However, it's a bit ironic that I got into a Twitter argument with Matt Perpetua the other day because I think that The Strokes had a weirdly outsized influence over 2000s music. He was very worried that I was cruelly hurting the feelings of Interpol and Franz Ferdinand by suggesting they were influenced by and owed a portion of their success to The Strokes.

Also I don't find the relationship between strokes and franz ferdinand and interpol.

Franz Ferdinand if influenced by a modern rock bans are closer to Spoon. Interpol are Joy Division through and through and then influence The Killers maybe. Strokes are more like the very domesticated version of 70s rock bands like Television, Feelies, Stooges and Velvet Underground. I guess Tom Petty too.

Plus Daft Punk and hiphop rhythms and stuff. But we've been over this again and again recently.

"take me out" starts as pastiche of the strokes, then turns into pastiche of "interpol" (around the "i say you don't know" bit). in lizzie goodman's recent book, alex k directly admits seeing the strokes and interpol live encouraged him to make music like that

Moodles, Thursday, 21 September 2017 00:38 (eight years ago)

i had never heard of urge overkill until today. sounds like a fictional hair rock band from an 80s/early 90s movie.

I had an album of theirs once which made absolutely no impression on me whatsoever.
