new wake-me-up-from-my-coma-of-ultimate-boredom answerz

geeta (geeta), Saturday, 9 November 2002 00:41 (twenty-three years ago)

haha do the fall have to play EVERY british ATP?

jess (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 9 November 2002 01:45 (twenty-three years ago)

haha yeah jess they're the "rock band" this year!!

geeta (geeta), Saturday, 9 November 2002 01:46 (twenty-three years ago)

i would like to see old-LFO play with nu-LFO.

jess (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 9 November 2002 01:48 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm hlaf tempted to go see the magic band at their london gig. they'll prob be rub though.

apart from that the lineup is useless.

toby (tsg20), Saturday, 9 November 2002 02:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Mira Calix
one of autechre's wife

O.S.T.
this is my drinking buddy!

chaki (chaki), Saturday, 9 November 2002 02:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Chaki should get himself and Rose for Bodhan on.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 9 November 2002 02:58 (twenty-three years ago)

has anyone here actually heard of or actually heard all of these bands?

keith (keithmcl), Saturday, 9 November 2002 03:06 (twenty-three years ago)

37 of them, at least.

jess (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 9 November 2002 03:14 (twenty-three years ago)

If you haven't heard Thirstin Howl you should...

jm, Saturday, 9 November 2002 03:52 (twenty-three years ago)

When I die, bury me with the Lo on...

jm, Saturday, 9 November 2002 03:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I think the lineup looks pretty good.

They're not really many 'bands' up there to recognize anyway, don't even know if I'd think of Autechre as a band in the first place. That's electronic music for you I guess...

Haven't Cannibal Ox played three ATP's now?

Michael Dieter, Saturday, 9 November 2002 03:55 (twenty-three years ago)

well i have no idea which are bands and which are pseudonyms, i imagine the performers will not have much difficulty blending in with the crowd.

keith (keithmcl), Saturday, 9 November 2002 05:48 (twenty-three years ago)

didn't O.S.T. name themselves after Geeta's site...?

M Matos (M Matos), Saturday, 9 November 2002 07:27 (twenty-three years ago)

i find this line-up more interesting than any of the previous ones (except maybe Mogwai's in 2000) and i might just make it this time

blueski, Saturday, 9 November 2002 09:04 (twenty-three years ago)

so nerr

blueski, Saturday, 9 November 2002 09:05 (twenty-three years ago)

there are some good things on this line up, but it doesnt make me want to rush out and buy a ticket by any means

gareth (gareth), Saturday, 9 November 2002 09:08 (twenty-three years ago)

the only thing putting me off is the sense of snobbery and elitism that i suspect occurs at EVERY ATP, but i'd rather go to this one than any other i've heard about...tho the L.A. one almost seems worth it for the Matt Groening flyer only

blueski, Saturday, 9 November 2002 09:11 (twenty-three years ago)

That looks like a list of bands with boring names.

For a minute I thought it said Cannibal Corpse.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 9 November 2002 09:31 (twenty-three years ago)

parmegiani live yum

but otherwise it's like the last 5 years never happened

bob zemko (bob), Saturday, 9 November 2002 11:47 (twenty-three years ago)

''Ned Beckett''

hehehe...does anyone know anything abt them.

''i'm hlaf tempted to go see the magic band at their london gig. they'll prob be rub though.''

yeah well it's just like The sunra arkestra without sun ra. I wouldn't even be tempted really because i love the magic band.

and the aphex twin turns up again!

so what would you all have in yr ATP? I know we must've done a thread on this but tell me at least abt five acts that would give us all an idea.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 9 November 2002 12:05 (twenty-three years ago)

radio crew, fantasy three, byron davis and the fresh krew, la dream team and uh, rudiger carl

bob zemko (bob), Saturday, 9 November 2002 12:14 (twenty-three years ago)

heh Bob- I think i must have been hibernating these last five years as i don't know abt any of them. not even rudigert carl. not that it matters.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 9 November 2002 12:18 (twenty-three years ago)

All the people I like seeing live or am curious about seeing live, of course:

Missy Elliot, Trina, Charlemagne Palestine, Sugababes, Daniel Bedingfield, Kevin Rowland, Guns N Roses, Mis-Teeq, The Clientele, Bodenstandig 2000, Taskforce, 2 Live Crew, The Streets vs MC Pitman, Toumani Diabate, The Pines and the London Bootleg Orchestra. Probably some others too.

Tom (Groke), Saturday, 9 November 2002 12:55 (twenty-three years ago)

charlamagne palestine and 2 live crew are the names that jump out of that list obv. and yes, I'd enjoy seeing kevin rowland dressed as a woman, if only to see other ppl's faces as he goes through his 'routine'.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 9 November 2002 12:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Are Kool Keith and KutMasta Kurt working together now, then? Is there an album by them or summat, or is this just a live thing?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 9 November 2002 13:01 (twenty-three years ago)

taskforce!! TASKFORCE!!!!! AAAAAGGGHHHHHH get back in yr skull young man

bob zemko (bob), Saturday, 9 November 2002 13:41 (twenty-three years ago)

keith n' kurt have been working together for donks

bob zemko (bob), Saturday, 9 November 2002 13:42 (twenty-three years ago)

tom that would be the best atp evah!!

jess (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 9 November 2002 16:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Quick hypothetical question:

If any one member of The Fall meets any one member of LFO, and they give each other a high five... will the world implode?

David Allen, Saturday, 9 November 2002 18:13 (twenty-three years ago)

you do know which lfo we're talking about here, right?

jess (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 9 November 2002 18:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Is that the same "Curtis Roads" who was for a long time editor of the Computer Music Journal? If so, that's an adventurous pick...

Paul in Santa Cruz, Saturday, 9 November 2002 18:29 (twenty-three years ago)

I've only heard of 11 or so of the groups (mostly the hip-hop ones), but it looks good to me. Sonic Sum!

Jordan (Jordan), Saturday, 9 November 2002 18:38 (twenty-three years ago)

oh look i didn't see sunn there

bob zemko (bob), Saturday, 9 November 2002 19:26 (twenty-three years ago)

The Autechre bill: seems ok, not enough variety, no real surprises.
I had a fantastic time at the Albini-curated ATP this year (esp. when I got to stand abt two feet away from Roger Miller's gtr pedals, something I never really thought I'd live to do), tho' the Tortoise line-up was prob. more surprising/varied - Derek Bailey and Television and Prefuse 73 and Fred Anderson and Lambchop etc. Julio is right, however - the Ra-less (John Gilmore-less!) Arkestra were sad rather than mindblowing, and any Magic Band reunion w/out CB cld be similarly tacky + pointless - which Magic Band line-up are we talking abt, anyway?

Andrew L (Andrew L), Saturday, 9 November 2002 19:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, and are the Earth at ATP the same Earth who were on Sub Pop? I love their second alb.

Fuck it, yeah Parmegiani, O'Rourke, SND, Autechre, Aphex Twin, Pita, Rhythm + Sound - it cld be a lot lot worse...

Andrew L (Andrew L), Saturday, 9 November 2002 19:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned Beckett = Ned Raggett not trying very hard to find a pseudonym?

Leee (Leee), Saturday, 9 November 2002 19:44 (twenty-three years ago)

which Magic Band line-up are we talking abt, anyway?

"The formative lineup is expected to be in
place and will include Mark "Rockette Morton"
Boston on bass, John "Drumbo" French on drums,
Gary "Mantis" Lucas and Denny "Feelers Reebo"
Walley on Guitars."

Vic Funk, Saturday, 9 November 2002 20:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned Beckett = Ned Raggett not trying very hard to find a pseudonym?

Lemme tell ya, them Awtykre boys were damn good to an ol' feller like me wantin' to bring the art of throat-gargling back to a festival crowd. Yup.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 9 November 2002 20:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Cripes, I own records featuring 19 or 20 of the above and I *still* don't fancy it.

Speaking strictly personally, April weekends in Camber Sands have tended to be rather more about how many chalets my social circle can fill and how much drinking/subsequent foolishness can be accomplished than any musical excitement. I think I'm a bit too old for all that now (last year I was less old but much more broke). Even the usual entertainment of seeing just how utterly appalled the Pinefox is by each act (exception: Television, 2001) doesn't hold me in thrall; I mean, there aren't even any people who can't play guitar competently* this time round, it's just all so completely beyond the pale.

(* ok, yes there are - but it's not what they get paid for).

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Sunday, 10 November 2002 00:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Im looking forward to the New York ATP, hosted by none other then Steve-o Mack.

David Allen, Sunday, 10 November 2002 05:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't decide if it'd be great or terrible to live in a place where an event of this magnitude would make me feel nothing but jadedness.

Clarke B., Sunday, 10 November 2002 08:28 (twenty-three years ago)

earth = yes i think it is THAT earth = great. their video on a sub pop compilation features large-breasted naked women on horseback. come on...

also sunn o))) or whatever they're called = earth tribute band but heavier, sort of.

ned beckett = related to someone who started warp records (atp always seems to be very nepotistic / lets get all our mates to play - but then, wouldn't you?)

no morton subotnick / conrad schnitzler? perhaps they would show autechre up for not being quite as innovative as some people think they are.

no kraftwerk?

no fun?

oh, and that list at the top doesn't mention the skam records room:

GESCOM
BOLA
TEAM DOYOBI
MEAM
PUSH BUTTON OBJECTS
WEVIE STONDER
FREEFORM
TATAMAX
QUINOLINE YELLOW
ALDER AND ELIUS
MADE
N M B ALLSTARS
MR 76
ZK
SKAM DJ'S
DJ WOODY (itfc champ 2001)

mr drongo, Sunday, 10 November 2002 10:48 (twenty-three years ago)

my hope is that Barry Hogan of Foundation googles ATP or himself and finds this thread and starts calling you all bedwetters.

DV (dirtyvicar), Sunday, 10 November 2002 12:57 (twenty-three years ago)

yes, that would certainly show us! that guy!

jess (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 10 November 2002 14:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Carl Craig is great. Autechre are like Paul Oakenfold without the bass drums and the divas.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 10 November 2002 17:53 (twenty-three years ago)

explain, ronan, please!

gareth (gareth), Sunday, 10 November 2002 19:28 (twenty-three years ago)

I have an Autechre album, and it just sounds like wanky prog/trance minus a big thumping beat, seriously, it's that grey one, I got the lend of it years ago and never gave it back. I realise I'm probably missing something here, but honestly, it's like Digweed last night only even less fun!

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 10 November 2002 19:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Ronan, a million IDM fans just immolated themselves.

Leee (Leee), Monday, 11 November 2002 00:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Good!

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 11 November 2002 00:19 (twenty-three years ago)

No fun = no good?

bnw (bnw), Monday, 11 November 2002 01:58 (twenty-three years ago)

is it tri repetae ronan? its ok, but i prefer them later on (chiastic slide, LP5, and confield), all a bit superfluous cuz y'aint gonna pick any them up!

gareth (gareth), Monday, 11 November 2002 09:30 (twenty-three years ago)

it's like Digweed last night only even less fun

You actually paid to hear Digweed play vinyl sedatives?

Siegbran (eofor), Monday, 11 November 2002 10:13 (twenty-three years ago)

All acocunts say Carl Craig is a useless DJ (great recordings though) but if he plays live would be a different matter.

tigerclawskank, Monday, 11 November 2002 10:35 (twenty-three years ago)

keith, even *i've* "actually heard" 12 of those "bands"

mark s (mark s), Monday, 11 November 2002 13:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I've heard of a lot more of these than I had from this year's ATP, which I went to. We've had tickets booked for a month already, but then we're sad...

alext (alext), Monday, 11 November 2002 13:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I saw Carl Craig recently and he was pretty good, can't mix for shit but very good music. Yeah I paid money for Digweed. Shame.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 11 November 2002 14:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah I paid money for Digweed.

So...is it true that he's mostly spinning progressive breaks these days (in an attempt to spice up his sound)?

Siegbran (eofor), Monday, 11 November 2002 19:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Yep, certainly alot of the set was that. He wasn't so bad, I mean I went along with a friend who's a really big fan so I did the right thing or whatever. The breaks stuff was ok in places, it's all such pill music though, I can't imagine dancing to it, ever.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 11 November 2002 19:10 (twenty-three years ago)

it's all such pill music though

With all respect, so are Carl Craigs sets, aren't they?

Siegbran (eofor), Monday, 11 November 2002 22:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, not really! He played stuff I'd dance to anyway, like DJ Rolando, or Donna Summer, or the DJ Bubblecuts (Basement Jaxx) remix of Good Life by Inner City

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 11 November 2002 23:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I saw Parmegiani at Rien a voir this year and he was fantastic. And Zoviet France, Coil, Earth - what are you complaining about? Does Hecker = Tim Hecker?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Monday, 11 November 2002 23:08 (twenty-three years ago)

so what would you all have in yr ATP? I know we must've done a thread on this but tell me at least abt five acts that would give us all an idea.

Sonic Youth, Nick Cave, Lightning Bolt, Tom Waits, Fugazi, Black Masks For Secrecy, Against Me.

Ian Johnson (orion), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 00:12 (twenty-three years ago)

i would have d'arcangelo in there

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 09:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Yello / St Etienne / Bob Corridor / Super Furry Animals / Lamb / Goldfrapp / Amon Tobin / 808 State / Casino / Custom Blue / A Million Sons / Sean Lee / The Selecter / Le Tigre / Fila Brazillia / Kid 606 / 2 Many DJs / Osymyso / Tipsy / Leila / Cabaret Voltaire / Pilote / Mambo Taxi / Seefeel / Depth Charge / Biosphere / Infesticons / The Other People Place / Caspar Pound

too populist maybe heh

blueski, Tuesday, 12 November 2002 10:39 (twenty-three years ago)

oops, i keep calling the Majesticons the Infesticons...boy is my face red

blueski, Tuesday, 12 November 2002 10:41 (twenty-three years ago)

blueski, yr list isnt bad at all, (though i think the other people place guy
passed away earlier this year)

ok, i guess i'd go for

st etienne, dopplereffekt, osymyso, dmx krew, tipsy, modjo, fred falke, westbam, alan braxe, montgolfier brothers, gnac, claude young, jeff mills, thomas bangalter/daft punk, autechre, random number, east of suez, cassius, d'arcangelo, sukia, morrissey, bogdan raczynski, safety scissors, gimmik,

(left off hip hop and pop stuff because unlikely to play such an event)

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 10:55 (twenty-three years ago)

hey you're more likely to get hip hop than french dance

blueski, Tuesday, 12 November 2002 11:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Julio is right, however - the Ra-less (John Gilmore-less!) Arkestra were sad rather than mindblowing

Really? I've had a great time both times that I've gone to see the current Marshall Allen-led incarnation of the Arkestra.

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 16:04 (twenty-three years ago)

four months pass...
Revive!

Getting excited now - we have a 7 person chalet booked - any other ILXers going?

Still don't know anything abt: Ned Beckett, Mark Broom, Disjecta, G-Man, Thirstin Howl, O.S.T., Req, Curtis Roads, Anthony 'Shake' Shakir, Sluta Leta, Sonic Sum, Stasis, Sunn, Surgeon, Yasunao Tone or
Venetian Snares.

I def. plan to go and see ('schedule' permitting): Aphex, Coil, Earth, O'Rourke, Parmegiani, Pita, Rhythm and Sound, SND

Andrew L (Andrew L), Monday, 17 March 2003 20:35 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm going! Wouldn't miss it, haven't really looked at the line-up, I prefer walking about and discovering things myself. A bit disappointed the DJ from Rough Trade isn't playing in The Queen Vic this time though, he's been awesome every time.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Monday, 17 March 2003 23:15 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm going too.. after much distress thinking it was sold out, emailed ATP who kindly pointed me towards the last 7 perosn chalet..

I hope Carl Craig either DJs (he's a great DJ) or doesn't do his Innerzone Orchestra stuff...

Anthony 'Shake' Shakir is a detroit guy, 2nd wave i think. I have a couple of tracks by him which I pretty good. Just detroit stuff, y'know, but good...

I'm looking forward to

ANTHONY 'SHAKE' SHAKIR » APHEX TWIN » BABY FORD » CARL CRAIG
COIL » DREXCIYAN DJ STINGRAY » EL-P + MURS »
G-MAN » GRAHAM MASSEY » JIM O'ROURKE »
KOOL KEITH » KUT MASTA KURT » LFO » MARK BROOM »
PUBLIC ENEMY » SONIC SUM » STASIS
STRICTLY KEV » SURGEON »
THE FALL

I hope they acts make an effort to make sure every one fun, 'cos its very much "serious, boys and toys music".....

Nik (Nik), Monday, 17 March 2003 23:36 (twenty-three years ago)

let me clarify:

I hope the acts make an effort to make sure everyone has fun, 'cos the line up look very much like "serious, boys and their electronic toys making dark and serious music".....

Nik (Nik), Monday, 17 March 2003 23:38 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll be there - the GABBA massive have a chalet, and a stereo.

nick.K (nick.K), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 11:03 (twenty-three years ago)

three weeks pass...
Post mortem time - lotsa fun but plenty of trainspotting too. Of course I found the likes of Coil and Jim O'Rourke enjoyable - and Jim did the best laptop set of the weekend - I saw plenty but he had tunes.

The shadow of Bowlie is still there, albeit limited, in the bar, having ahd enough phucked up brekabeats from Sunday's closing act Venetian Snares the punk/disco/northen soul in there was the stuff.
