Just got through watching the HYPE documentary from several years back, and now... of course, I'm in a nostalgia spiral that will only end in a liquoured up Sunday night binge of Screaming Trees and Nag Champa.

Could those in the know set me up with an essential ten list of pre-1991 grunge tracks that I might not have heard of, but nonetheless, rawk?

Luv, Maria.

P.S. For those who haven't got them yet, the recent Gits reissues are a fucking revelation.

I don't know if I'd call Blood Circus 'essential' or not...

Haha - Blood Circus! Here we go in the same sort of vein (but maybe not exactly essential - there's a very good reason why people actually remember Mudhoney!)(and no I'm not being sarcy - honest!)

Swallow - Trapped
Skin Yard - Open Fist
Cosmic Psychos - Can't Come In
Big Tube Squeezer - Sweet Jane
Feedtime - Fun Fun Fun
The Fluid - Hooked
Rein Sanction - Creel
Thee Hypnotics - Justice In Freedom
Eric's Trip - Need
Sister Ray - Release

two years pass...
Sydney's Box of Fish described their sound as grunge, and had a satisfyingly grungey sound, back in 1984. Not sure what kind of direct influence they had on Nirvana et al, but they did influence the Black Eye bands, including Lubricated Goat, which in turn may have influenced the Seattle bunch.
