Do any Irish posters watch RTE's "alternative music" show? What you think of it? Leagues O' Toole is annoying, isnt he?

Michael Bourke, Sunday, 10 November 2002 15:23 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't watch it anymore. It could have been leagues that did it for me. Does he still talk like he's wasting his pants? He lacks Uaneen's boistrousness or Donal Dineen's sporadic talking confusion destruction. I'd doubt I'd watch it anyway tho. and the last broadcast, baby, havent watchd that either. fuck the world.

Leagues is a twat, how can anyone so obviously awful at presenting a tv show actually do that for a living. He's going for some kind of aloof coolness and he actually just looks terrified and wooden. As for the music, well that's shite too. Of course criticise it in Irish music circles, and you'll be berated, because hey it's Irish, and it's not manufactured pop, whoopdedoo.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 10 November 2002 16:16 (twenty-three years ago)

what's the last broadcast?
Leagues is like a caricature of an indie hipster. The music tends to suck also. All I can remember being shown the last night was The Polyphonic Spree and I fell asleep before they showed the Pavement video.

Michael Bourke, Sunday, 10 November 2002 16:35 (twenty-three years ago)

There's an electro show on TG4 now, called Riantas or something? Haven't seen it but it might be a bit of a laugh, anything's better than Leagues. No Disco's tune selection is a bit suspect lately aswell, why can't they play anything remotely fun!!!!

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 10 November 2002 16:50 (twenty-three years ago)

last broadscast is a new fanning-presented show

naked as sin (naked as sin), Sunday, 10 November 2002 16:51 (twenty-three years ago)

That TG4 show is pretty good. I saw the video to "It just wont do" the last time I watched it.

Michael Bourke, Sunday, 10 November 2002 16:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Haven't seen the Fanning Show yet, what sort of music is it?

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 10 November 2002 17:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Leagues is spectacularly uncharismatic. He's just awful, and not even so-awful-he's-funny. It's painful to watch him.

I used to watch it a fair bit, but I haven't in a while. The music's quite good, but there isn't much else to grab my attention, so my interest has waned.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Sunday, 10 November 2002 18:16 (twenty-three years ago)

first episode (which i didn't see) of the last broadcast had an interview wit robbie williams and something to do wit da rollin stones. i think there's a section where fanning gets cheeky. i'd say the actual sort of music would vary from week to week. i may consciously not watch or may iuhjb gcyh68dew6759878668766886868 6r45dcx mtfyrentyrednny5ertynyttynntn777777777777mmkiyttt88705897y6666jmrm654k647m5865895768645 His singles night wit bianca + mr spring wossa deal there eh, eh eh, eh, eh, eh, eh? I find it hard to finsh sentences that discuss irish music media.

Leagues worked okay in the context of fraternising wit Darragh Purcell but was outcooled by the Leary person with the moustache.

naked as sin (naked as sin), Monday, 11 November 2002 01:23 (twenty-three years ago)

didn't no one like Uaneen when she started? All the talk about her when she died struck me as very revisionist.

I don't think I've ever seen the Leagues No Disco.

DV (dirtyvicar), Monday, 11 November 2002 10:17 (twenty-three years ago)

It was revisionist. A mate of mine's girlfriend knew her and said it was awful when she started as they were trying to be remotely nice about it.

Anyway we can thank No Disco for supporting David Gray during his Wilderness years.

The point of No Disco is the music, not the shit presenters, and some of its good so I keep meaning to watch it. Though half the music is generic major label indie/alt stuff like Queens of the Shit Age.

tigerclawskank, Monday, 11 November 2002 10:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Is that really his name -- Leagues O'Toole? What a er, tool he is. Micheal is right when he says yer man is like a caricature of an indie hipster - more of an early 90's version at that. There seems to be this consensus in Dublin "hip" music head circles that only slow earnest music is worthwhile (trip hop, post rock, acoustic David Gray/Mundy types) and anything else is crap. Donal Dineen exemplifies this attitude on his show - a lot of it is jazzy IDM of the dullest kind. As Ronan says, there's no bit of fun like an odd blast of South London 2-step or something - nah, that'd be too populist for these idiots. As for Leagues though, christ you'd just love to smack that guy out of his slouchy, cooler than thou dourness.

David Gunnip, Monday, 11 November 2002 14:42 (twenty-three years ago)

everyone wuvs him, though. Certainly at Wonky he was being mobbed by earnest Dublin indie fans.

DV (dirtyvicar), Monday, 11 November 2002 14:46 (twenty-three years ago)

I saw him walking down a street in Cork once. What a day.

naked as sin (naked as sin), Monday, 11 November 2002 18:05 (twenty-three years ago)

That wasn't meant resentfully.

naked as sin (naked as sin), Monday, 11 November 2002 18:22 (twenty-three years ago)

He's a nice geezer! Modest, into what he's doing, as unpretentious as one could hope for.
Excellent observation about the general state of Dublin's hipster elite's tastes: snoozy shit all round.

Conor (Conor), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 02:43 (twenty-three years ago)

I often get the impression all the local Dublin bands are digging this post rock scene now because if they made straight up rock people could accuse it of being fucking shit and they wouldn't have some kind of "oh you just don't get it" shield to hide behind.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 10:34 (twenty-three years ago)

good point....back to the no-disco guy, he's a twat...there is really no more to it??? nearly as ridiculous as Daragh Purcell...now I saw him walking thru temple bar one saturday afternoon about 12 seconds into his 15....he looked so self-conscious, it was scarey....what is it with theses people and their HAIR?????

derek, Tuesday, 12 November 2002 10:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought Purcell was funny, I mean at least that dude could smile at the camera. (still an arse admittedly but at least could do his job)

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 10:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I think all the Dublin bands are into postrock because it is muso-y and appeals to musicians.

this is not a criticism of the music.

and anyway, they're not all postrockers, viz The Chalets, Warlords of Pez, Large Mound, Dudley Corporation.
