i really loved Roisin Machine but i always felt she was maybe not the greatest person in the world, not necessarily evil but maybe just not particularly humble, graceful, or kind. this was obv a surprise at the time it happened though, and i think more than anything else she's just a total phony who is currently punching down. just total self destruction yeah, though of course her contributing to the side of the enemy is a far sadder crime.

All of this has just sucked. Has made some of my favorite music of the last three decades, and was still putting out great stuff. Better than what she did 25 years ago even.

I can kinda separate art from artist,mostly... but listening to her now is like eating a great meal at a restaurant, but the restaurant also literally smells like shit.

i'm glad i don't miss listening to her music, like at all. the best things she did were maurice fulton collaborations and thankfully i can just listen to maurice fulton's million other collaborations / remixes if i want something that scratches that itch. my attachment to her music must have been as shallow as she is.

the only thing i might have some residual fondness for is the francois k and eric kupper remix of moloko's "forever more" but i'm afraid i'd just find her lyrics unbearably sappy and self-regarding now.

seems likely she's not finding enthusiastic writing collaborators. the only thing she's released since turning terf* is a cover of Born Under Punches with Kenny Dope Gonzalez, but it was done for a whole Talking Heads tribute album so her vocal might have been on the shelf for a while.


* she digitally self-released a collection of remixes from Hit Parade after Ninja dropped her, but nothing new

her biggest even moderately mainstream moment in a long time was maybe pairing with Jessie Ware a couple years back just prior to the terfy shit, and to Jessie, Roisin is now persona non grata afaict.

i feel like alison goldfrapp is an underrated alt diva who makes murphy's music seem stiff in comparison (knowing what we know now about murphy it's hard not to hear a fake unctuousness in everything). goldfrapp's last album was really good imo, i still listen to about half of it regularly.

What’s the best Goldfrapp to start with? “Number One” was a big hit in our house, largely because of the video. It’s a good jam but it’s all I’ve heard.

Black Cherry was my way in and is still my favourite. Tales Of Us isn't far behind, but is quite different. All their albums are worth hearing.

Sophie is great, especially her underrated Trip The Light Fantastic album. Also feels like a good time to bring up that second Rachel Stevens album which is still an absolute triumph despite Rachel not exactly being the most exciting pop-star.

I think people used to compare Alison and Roisin a lot because they were both post-trip hop divas who balanced an elliptical relationship to disco with a strong sense of artistry and a commitment to camp visuals - the arcs of their careers each bent towards post-grad queer stanning even when they didn’t necessarily sound alike

The boringly literal answer to “what albums should I replace Roisin in my record collection with” is probably either the Dani Siciliano debut album or the Kathy Diamond debut album

I wasn't particularly enamoured with the second solo Alison Goldfrapp album - it felt a little bit like a collection of cast-offs - but I really liked the first solo one. I get that a lot of the criticisms of AG herself are heard to shake off because she does lean into the cold archness of her performances but for me they're a feature not a bug.

I actually think the "not exciting" take on Rachel Stevens is nonsense. She got a song about trading blowjobs for hit singles to nearly top the charts in the name of charity, that's a lot more interesting than Murphy's GCSE "I'm wearing glitter to the high street do you see" fashion posturing. Even before Murphy doubled-down on this TERF nonsense I'd have still taken "Some Girls" over anything off the third and fourth solo Murphy albums which are just boring and drab.

The most exciting thing Murphy did in twenty years was the Maurice Fulton collaborative singles. But with his albums with Kathy Diamond, MU, Mim Suleiman, Tamara Barnett-Herrin and Danae existing, I can easily substitute them.

it was sort of convenient that her music's quality declined around the same time as her politics. she had an excellent run but hit machine was confusingly bad, idk what koze was going for on most of it. roisin machine was also a bit underwhelming, less than the sum of its parts, a collection of bad edits of good singles that didn't really fit together as an album

i should be generous to koze and blame hit parade's flaws all on her though

I find Koze’s remixes usually top notch, especially Lapsley’s ‘Operator’. Tend to find his solo work and productions a bit disappointing.

Bang otm! Especially the bolded, Gareth Pugh did a lot of the heavy lifting there. Particularly galling to realise her fashion and music both drew heavily from queer sources and as mentioned upthread, her fanbase, but she certainly won’t be the first and last. And Some Girls beats the shit out of anything she’s ever done. Is Rachel Stevens a TERF? No idea. That’s where her boringness and resistance to having a public persona works in her favour. Don’t know, don’t have to care.

I liked the last Koze album and avoided Hit Machine somewhat out of concern that I'd like at least a couple of things on it on their own terms. My RM faves stay classic but I need never go back them, so be it.

I love Koze and he's the only reason I checked out this thread. I was excited about their collaboration and I had barely heard of Roisin. The only thing I heard from the project was the grotesque video and then all of the anti-trans stuff spilled out and I never bothered to explore her further. I keep following what's going on here just to keep track of an annoying terf.
