Ellen DeGeneres Sings

Simple really: If I was Ellen DeGeneres, holed up in England, currently filming Ted and Sylvia, and had been asked to consider recording an album of oblique cover versions, but I had wilfully said I should choose the numbers, but was not very clued up about cool music ... What should I plump for, and can you tell me a bit about the backgorund of the suggested songs, so I can appear savvy. I am not Ellen DeGeneres, by the way. I promise.

The theme from "Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads?"

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 10 November 2002 18:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Since you say the album is gonna be full of "oblique" cover versions, I think it gives us license to be ridiculous. Therefore:

The Electric Eels' "Cyclotron": hilariously vengeful Cleveland proto-punk with well-nigh meaningless lyrics full of references to gay sex and consumer appliances. Hey, she had Devo on her show, so you never know...

"Send in the Clowns": the important thing to remember is that is NOT about clowns. Great for singers with a limited range. I mean, if Grace Jones could cover it...

The Electric Eels' "Cyclotron"

I think Ellen is more of a 'Cold Meat' kinda lady.

I think a cover of Judas Priest's "Turbo Lover" would make EVERYone scratch their heads.

Video of Ellen D. performing "Shoop" right here.

Actually, I couldn't see any video and it crashed my browser, so caveat whatever.

The Humpty Dance.

Is that it?! Who, please, are the Likely Lads? Excuse me, but what the f**** has cold meat got to do with anything? I did enjoy the Plath pun, but it's not going to help me much - if I was Ellen DeGeneres: I need background information. Crew members have been forthcoming and this is why I'm currently toying with Carly's Simon's 'Why', That Petrol Emotion's 'Big Decision', Pete Astor's 'Heart-shaped Swimming Pool', Stephen Duffy's 'Unkiss that Kiss', Buddy Holly's 'What To Do' ... What to do?

I can't believe no one's said 'eat you out' by GG Allin yet.

Where do they FIND these people?

"Fuck The Pain Away" by Peaches.

Oh…I get it a little better. Go for Buddy Holly’s “Well, Alright” instead. Probably ANYTHING by the Magnetic Fields (headed by gay songwriting genius/misanthrope/wit), esp. “Love Is Like a Bottle of Gin” for mordant wit, “Papa Was a Rodeo” for mordant gender-fucking. And…jeez…Dylany/Reedy ex-Pere Ubu guitarist Peter Laughner and his acoustic (right?) ”Sylvia Plath.”

GodDAMNIT, I was gonna say Peaches! But go for Lil’ Kim’s “How Many Licks” also. (It’s NAST-EE!)

Well, we knew that.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate to say it but, on the evidence presented in Finding Nemo, I believe Ms. DeGeneres is guilty on 2 counts of actually being a very good singer.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

she opened for my dad's cheesy 80s band once. jokes, not music. apparently noone thought she was funny.

Felcher (Felcher), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)
