Heard the song "Witching Hour" on the radio earlier tonight, and I've now listened to this album three times straight thru. Fantastic atmosphere, neato guitar (riffing and atmospherics).

I know there's a definitely market for this on ILM, but I'm terrible at hyping things. Just try it out.

good stuff Johnny, love the way the piano's mixed in "Always", bouncing off the mix - real nice

Week of Wonders (Ross), Wednesday, 25 October 2017 03:49 (eight years ago)

I just gave her ep from last year a spin as well. Equally top shelf.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 25 October 2017 04:26 (eight years ago)

"signals" is a dead ringer for Hanne Hukkelberg

Week of Wonders (Ross), Monday, 30 October 2017 00:11 (eight years ago)

I'm not familiar enough with Hanne Hukkelberg to have picked up on that, but it's a good song no doubt.

eight months pass...

Wow, that was quick. A new album already.

Whoa

Ross, Wednesday, 11 July 2018 19:27 (seven years ago)

I love that she's not a shredder but still plays guitar in a very deliberately unconventional way. Sort of like St. Vincent, except you know Annie wants to break into a metal speed solo at any moment and stops herself.

Anyway, this song is super dope.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 11 July 2018 20:50 (seven years ago)

I do like this song (and it's not my usual vibe)

i’m still stanning (morrisp), Wednesday, 11 July 2018 21:06 (seven years ago)

She reminded me surface level of Olsen but Madeline is far more dreamy, love the spectral nature combined with those guitars. Agree song is dope

Ross, Wednesday, 11 July 2018 22:01 (seven years ago)

I feel pretty comfortable calling "Cut Me Off" my song of the summer at this point. I've listened to it about 300 times.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 20 July 2018 16:50 (seven years ago)

Absolutely otm
Gorgeous outro too

this album is really so good. a perfect album for summer evenings. i am really loving No Weekend - the sax! and when Your Art explodes

ufo, Monday, 22 October 2018 10:02 (seven years ago)

love this album

sean gramophone, Monday, 22 October 2018 13:00 (seven years ago)

beatufiul record, ufo otm about 'your art,' a standout among standouts.

voodoo chili, Monday, 22 October 2018 14:17 (seven years ago)

I've listened to this album 3 times today. Totally took me by surprise. First track with it's Cocteau's style harmonies didn't prepare me for how much it rocks later on.

"cut me off" is the best song i've ever heard, this person is a genius

budo jeru, Thursday, 28 February 2019 20:36 (six years ago)

The rest of the album kind of drifted away from me in the end, but Cut Me Off is cemented as a lifelong fave for me.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 2 March 2019 04:09 (six years ago)

same

budo jeru, Saturday, 2 March 2019 05:08 (six years ago)

i still adore the whole album. the new japanese house album feels like it occupies a somewhat similar space to this

New single is subdued but a delight.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 19 May 2020 16:28 (five years ago)

another new one

had missed "sucker" when it came out but it's delightful, similar in mood to last year's fantastic lambchop album

I preordered the lp when Sucker came out, but it got pushed back to August along the way, so this renewed my anticipation.

another new single, album out friday. sounding nice, love that big distortion on the guitar that comes in intermittently.

mozzy star (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 29 July 2020 00:54 (five years ago)

fuck me this album is absurdly terrific.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 2 August 2020 21:27 (five years ago)

it's great. doesn't feel very different from the last album but she's so good at what she does that i don't mind at all

ufo, Monday, 3 August 2020 00:48 (five years ago)

It's pretty similar, maybe a bit more muscular and guitar-centric

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Monday, 3 August 2020 01:36 (five years ago)

The last one was drifty in a quiet way. This one seems more anchored? I dunno. That's the best I've got.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 3 August 2020 02:07 (five years ago)

songs are better this time around

New EP just dropped. The title track "Summer Quarter" is great, but the others are also great. I continue to love her instincts and choices made as a guitarist.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 22 January 2021 05:12 (four years ago)

Good stuff!

Yay, new LP! I knew she'd been consciously de-emphasizing the guitar in her newer work, but there's still some here even with it being really synth heavy.

The new album is simply lovely.

Funny how even though I understand Madeline didn’t work with Wye Oak on this one, it still sounds very post Wye Oak (in much the same way that the Japanese House sounds post The 1975).

Tim F, Tuesday, 1 August 2023 21:44 (two years ago)

i didn't even realize jenn wasner wasn't involved here, it doesn't sound markedly different from her wasner-produced work.

agreed that it's lovely. "it carries on" was the standout, at first blush.

I am once again asking you to listen to a beautiful new Madeline Kenney album.

New one (Kiss from the Balcony) is more rock than its predecessor I guess, but I think it might also be her most intricate album - the mix teems with curlicues of sound.

Tim F, Sunday, 20 July 2025 21:43 (five months ago)

Despite anticipating it enough to pre-order the fancy vinyl, I've still only listened through it once. Very positive first impression!

Thread's been very sparse since 2020, but I just have to say Sucker's Lunch has become something I keep in regular rotation for the past year or two. I don't think I fully appreciated how rewarding that album is initially.

ⓓⓡ (Johnny Fever), Monday, 21 July 2025 02:52 (five months ago)

really liking it. "i never" and "semitones" are career highlights imo.

catching up to kiss from the balcony. i think the only song of hers i'd previously heard was "sucker," which i really like but this album makes me realize she is a more interesting artist than i'd assumed. (wasn't aware of the jenn wasner connection, but it totally makes sense.) now i need to go back to her earlier stuff.

jaymc, Wednesday, 10 December 2025 14:29 (two weeks ago)

Perfect Shapes is still my favorite of hers
