i think i've listened this part of the album maybe twice

marcos, Wednesday, 25 October 2017 16:33 (seven years ago)

The Grand Vizier's Garden Party is not better than I remember.

Terry Micawber (Tom D.), Wednesday, 25 October 2017 16:33 (seven years ago)

Perhaps, but The Narrow Way might be

MaresNest, Wednesday, 25 October 2017 16:34 (seven years ago)

Destroy the whole album.

Gholdfish Killah (Turrican), Wednesday, 25 October 2017 16:38 (seven years ago)

Disappointed that Rick Wright couldn't come up with something better than Sysyphus, or even spelled it properly - the first part is not too bad I think.

Terry Micawber (Tom D.), Wednesday, 25 October 2017 16:38 (seven years ago)

"Several Species" just for being Ron Geesiny.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 25 October 2017 16:39 (seven years ago)

(xxpost)

and most of Atom Heart Mother while we're at it.

More and Obscured by Clouds rule though, the latter being the most underrated Floyd album of 'em all.

Gholdfish Killah (Turrican), Wednesday, 25 October 2017 16:40 (seven years ago)

several species but only for the title

mookieproof, Wednesday, 25 October 2017 16:40 (seven years ago)

"The Narrow Way" is good, the third part is a good song and the other parts are interesting at least. I'm a big fan of "Several Species", whereas "Grantchester Meadows" blows.

Terry Micawber (Tom D.), Wednesday, 25 October 2017 16:40 (seven years ago)

The Grand Vizier... Pt 2 is like all the tiny little edits from Mother's Of Invention albums strung together.

MaresNest, Wednesday, 25 October 2017 16:47 (seven years ago)

Narrow Way 3, quite obviously

imago, Wednesday, 25 October 2017 16:48 (seven years ago)

The opening of Tangerine Dream's "Atem" reminds me of "Sysyphus - Part 1".

Terry Micawber (Tom D.), Wednesday, 25 October 2017 16:53 (seven years ago)

If Wright had written 3 more of his tum-ti-tum, tea drinking psyche ditties instead of Sysyphus I'd have been much happier but I guess that time had passed.

MaresNest, Wednesday, 25 October 2017 16:55 (seven years ago)

Torn here... would like to say Narrow Way 3, but not sure it's the best version. Grantchester Meadows is ace.

PaulTMA, Wednesday, 25 October 2017 19:19 (seven years ago)

visiting grantchester meadows right outside of cambridge is like a holy experience

i'd vote the entire "narrow way" (movements i - iii) if that were an option

Aye an' a bit of mackerel, settler rack and down
Ran it down by the home, and I flew
Well, it slapped me and I flopped it down in the shade
And I cried, cried, cried

The tear had fallen down he had taken, never back to raise
And then cried Mary, and took out wi' your Claymore
Right outta a' pocket, I ran down, down by the mountain side
Battlin' the fiery horde that was falling around the feet

"Never!," he cried, "Never shall ye get me alive
Ye rotten hound of the burnie crew!"
Well I snatched fer the blade and a Claymore cut and thrust
And I fell down before him round his feet

Aye, a roar he cried fray the bottom of 'is heart
That I would nay fall but as dead
Dead as I can by why' feet, d'ya ken?
And the wind cried back

Mr. Snrub, Wednesday, 25 October 2017 20:54 (seven years ago)

I always thought it ended 'and the wind cried Mary'

imago, Wednesday, 25 October 2017 21:32 (seven years ago)

Yeah probably. I don't think any official lyrics have ever been released. Just like how nobody really knows when the different sections of "Atom Heart Mother" begin and end.

Mr. Snrub, Wednesday, 25 October 2017 22:09 (seven years ago)

How can anyone not love grantchester meadows
It is grade a fake syd
Also I hope someday I can visit its namesake

harbinger of failure (Jon not Jon), Wednesday, 25 October 2017 22:27 (seven years ago)

The live versions of GM are improved even more by Gilmour's lovely chorus harmony.

MaresNest, Wednesday, 25 October 2017 22:48 (seven years ago)

I always thought it ended 'and the wind cried Mary'

Same here, I've never heard "Ca Ira" but I'm willing to guess that "Several Species" is better than all 10 hours of it. "Grantchester Meadows" is seven minutes long, Donovan would have done it in two minutes and done it better.

Terry Micawber (Tom D.), Wednesday, 25 October 2017 23:24 (seven years ago)

I dunno if this disc rules...

brimstead, Wednesday, 25 October 2017 23:24 (seven years ago)

this record was not a good idea

cosmic brain dildo (Sparkle Motion), Wednesday, 25 October 2017 23:34 (seven years ago)

the live disc is my favourite PF recording tbh

imago, Wednesday, 25 October 2017 23:36 (seven years ago)

It rules.

Terry Micawber (Tom D.), Wednesday, 25 October 2017 23:38 (seven years ago)

sure does

cosmic brain dildo (Sparkle Motion), Thursday, 26 October 2017 00:17 (seven years ago)

something about Grantchester Meadows musically reminds me of It's All Over Now, Baby Blue (maybe even I Am Waiting too), in much the same way that Long Long Long reminds me of Sad Eyed Lady Of The Lowlands.

Paul, Thursday, 26 October 2017 02:58 (seven years ago)

voted Grand Vizier part 2, eerie haunted melody

Paul, Thursday, 26 October 2017 03:01 (seven years ago)

Ummagumma was my fave album ever c. Fall 1980 (recommended by Tuxedomoon in a Lou Stathis piece) and Astronomy Domine soon led me back to Syd. but by then I had Ambient 2 - game over for other albums, except briefly 154.

Paul, Thursday, 26 October 2017 03:07 (seven years ago)

Grantchester Meadows

"Grantchester Meadows" is one of my favourite Floyd songs - not just the best on this album. Pastoral PF rules.

pink floyd fans argued for decades, literally decades, what the last line of "several species" is, until we got old enough that we could afford decent speakers. it's "mary".

was always amused at mike watt's claim that "double nickels on the dime" was inspired by ummagumma.

bob lefse (rushomancy), Sunday, 29 October 2017 12:01 (seven years ago)

they couldn't have just asked roger waters?

??? How was this ever a question? The previous line is "and the wind cried..."

(And actually, the last line is "Thank you")
