becoming totally obsessed with these records. to summarize the website below, this person has been releasing anonymous records under a plethora of different names since the 90s. They are not put into conventional distribution channels, instead they are mailed randomly with no return address, dropped into thrift stores, left in dumpsters, etc.

this could be read as a gimmick if the tunes weren't so good, but they are.

Oh hi... didn't see this thread! The Terry record is probably my favorite (what a vibe!), Jim Collins a close second. Love the box set (CC/Boots/Snake)... admittedly kind of lost track after that (the Arian Sample and Roundtree records were impossible to find and tbh the mp3s didn't inspire me to want to spend a lot of time or money on them). Had no idea he was churning out lathe cuts at such a pace, for instance. Any advice for post-box listening?

yay thanks for posting!

the two "cosmic jazz" records (Life Lives, Zelda Rising) are v. different but worth a listen

the 10-single box is probably the most impressive post-3LP-box thing, so check that too

I really REALLY like the first track of the Wallace Drury record and some of the (newish) TSA one. Deep Thoughts and Fusetron have copies. but in general the newer stuff is a bit more downer/lonesome, not quite the ecstatic trance vibe of the 1st two like you mention.

I chopped the Snake & Remus album into separate tracks after I ripped it and it is really damn good, I keep coming back to that one as well

oh and apparently all those lathe cuts were found by one person in a Chicago thrift store, one copy each...

Wwwwwoowww. This dude's devotion to obscurity is impressive.

I really dig the downer vibes of the later ones, esp. TSA

hey there's new 2017 acetates listed on Discogs that aren't on the Bandcamp!

Hi, I manage the Robyn Nice Bandcamp page, but have no affiliation with the artist.

I noticed the addition of those two lathes late last year and contacted the person who added them to the Discogs database in the hopes that I might be able to get my hands on the audio. They never responded. I looked into their history and saw that they added some RN-related stuff a long time ago, so I assume that they have some connection to the person behind the work. I do know that the administrator of the blogspot fanpage is in possession of lathes from that series that have yet to be digitized, but I don't know if those two are among them. Perhaps if enough of you inquire, it might encourage them to rip the discs faster - I'd certainly like to add them to the rest of what's streaming.

Thanks for all that!

As of earlier today, a very reliable source has alerted me to the existence of a few more Robyn Nice lathes, though at this point, the pseudonyms they were issued under as well as any track titles are unknown to me. They will hopefully be listed on Discogs soon. As well, arrangements have been made for the digitization of these recordings as well as the two other lathes mentioned by sleeve above. All being well, I am hoping to add these discs to the Bandcamp within the next few months at the latest - hopefully earlier.

Not Nick, though this person's supposedly in contact with Nick.

theorchidshow, Thursday, 7 May 2020 20:08 (five years ago)

ah gotcha, yeah I knew they came from somewhere else.

Another previously-unknown lathe also supposedly from the 2017 batch.
