There's something quite sad about 'Viva Forever', I think... not because Geri had left before it was released as a single, but a lot of bands were falling apart in the late '90s and it was obvious that things were beginning to move on.

I remember seeing the Viva Forever video on mtv was very emotional, seemed like such a sad and beautiful song about death... I would have been about 10 years at the time.

Say You'll Be There, as much for the awesome video as for the song.

Realistically it’s one of the first album’s singles (my head says “say you’ll be there”, my heart says “2 become 1” and the rest of my body says “who do you think you are”) but I must admit to having a ridiculous soft spot for “goodbye”

I seem to remember Select Magazine (of all magazines) singling 'Who Do You Think You Are?' out as a highlight of the first album. I also remember Nicky Wire from the Manics in '96 being confused that they performed it as part of their Brit Awards performance (the one with the Union Jack dress) as he thought it was "awful"

There's a couple of decent deep cuts on the first two albums that would have made great singles, I think. 'Love Thing' particularly.

'Naked' from the first album stands out - not as a single contender, but it doesn't really sound like much else they did.

SAY YOU’LL BE THERE from the debut for me. Love the g-funk backing track and it’s the only track where they sound like a cool group and not tacky one.

The harmonica solo is actually kind of tacky

'Say You'll Be There' is great, yeah. That one probably has my favourite video.

some years ago I recorded a song using the Say You'll Be There instrumental, indeed a great g-funk vibe and ofc video is undeniable

but 2 Become 1 is still the one I play the most

'2 Become 1' always reminds me of Christmas '96.

"Say You'll Be There" is a better song but I think "Wannabe" is a better single - it's the kind of thing no other band could really have attempted successfully.

I didn't like the Spice Girls at the time (I was the age where girls were yukky and in the warring factions of fandom All Saints had the edge imo) but I'm amazed at how well some of these singles stand up.

I'm not sure All Saints were anywhere near as good, song-wise at least.

With hindsight it's obvious that All Saints were a very different prospect and if they weren't contemporary peers the need to compare them would have been much less.

All Saints had great songs but not nearly as many, they could hardly fill a greatest hits comp:

I dunno, Never Ever and Pure Shores are better than the vast majority of the songs here.

2 Become 1 is still the best song from the two groups though - so delightfully lavish!

'Never Ever' and 'Pure Shores' were as good as it got, but better than the best of the tracks here? I'm not so sure.

you're also forgetting "Black Coffee" and "War Of Nerves", plus both (!) comebacks have given us some great singles as well

I'll admit Pure Shores and Black Coffee pack more emotional punch for me than any Spice Girls single

Rock Steady was a great comeback, but I thought the consensus on Headlines (which I don't mind) was that it was a dud.

Headlines was such a disappointing comeback. I'm sure I read that Mel C disowned it pretty quickly. It's a shame it was so forgettable as their ballads were always so strong. Along with 2 Become 1 (which I voted for), I've always loved Viva Forever, Goodbye and Mama too.

As for album tracks that should have been singles, Never Give Up On The Good Times was always one of my favourites. I think it should have been a single instead of Stop.

All Saints > Spice Girls for me. They actually had swag, SG didn’t feel like it was actually there, they were more dorky in real life, weren’t they? The SG movie ruined whatever positive image I had of them

I've never seen the Spice Girls movie... it's the kind of thing you wouldn't really expect to be any good.

I saw the Spice Girls Bus once, it was getting a fill-up in Langley. I don't think there were any Spice Girls on it, but then I didn't check..

I think Spice World was too self-consciously striving to be a cult classic to actually become one. There's just too much defensive irony.
(I also saw it during the brief US theatrical run, and I think it probably would have been more fun if we weren't the only 3 people in the theater)

I just... don't think I'm part of the target audience for a Spice Girls movie, as much as I like the music.

lol I meant both comeback attempts by All Saints upthread, not "Headlines" which is awful.

Spiceworld is a movie full of great moments and Victoria is hilarious in it but it doesn't quite come off - it's too knowingly camp without actually pulling it off.
