Gholdfish Killah (Turrican), Sunday, 29 October 2017 19:41 (seven years ago)

oh hell yeah!

"2 Become 1" a song for the ages and gets my vote, but love all these (except the last two, can't recall them atm)

niels, Sunday, 29 October 2017 19:53 (seven years ago)

"Headlines" must be post breakup/Ginger leaving?

niels, Sunday, 29 October 2017 19:56 (seven years ago)

It was their sole reformation single!

Gholdfish Killah (Turrican), Sunday, 29 October 2017 19:58 (seven years ago)

It's between "Say You'll Be There" and "Spice Up Your Life" for me.

LeRooLeRoo, Sunday, 29 October 2017 20:39 (seven years ago)

Voted Spice Up Your Life

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Sunday, 29 October 2017 20:48 (seven years ago)

Yeah those are my favourites out of the ones I know, went for Say You’ll Be There. Great video too.

nate woolls, Sunday, 29 October 2017 20:48 (seven years ago)

Spice Up Your Life. First band I ever loved

flappy bird, Sunday, 29 October 2017 20:55 (seven years ago)

solitary vote for “who do you think you are”

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Sunday, 29 October 2017 23:15 (seven years ago)

I'm strugglimg to choose between '2 Become 1' and 'Stop'

Gholdfish Killah (Turrican), Monday, 30 October 2017 06:26 (seven years ago)

*struggling

Gholdfish Killah (Turrican), Monday, 30 October 2017 06:47 (seven years ago)

There's something quite sad about 'Viva Forever', I think... not because Geri had left before it was released as a single, but a lot of bands were falling apart in the late '90s and it was obvious that things were beginning to move on.

Gholdfish Killah (Turrican), Monday, 30 October 2017 06:56 (seven years ago)

I remember seeing the Viva Forever video on mtv was very emotional, seemed like such a sad and beautiful song about death... I would have been about 10 years at the time.

niels, Monday, 30 October 2017 08:18 (seven years ago)

xp haha I'll have to check out "Headlines"

niels, Monday, 30 October 2017 08:19 (seven years ago)

Easily "Say you'll be there" for me.
I never understood the appeal of "2 become 1". It's a fairly generic slowjam iirc.

AlXTC from Paris, Monday, 30 October 2017 09:02 (seven years ago)

hmm maybe you just need to set you spirit freeeeee, it's the only way to beeeee

niels, Monday, 30 October 2017 09:15 (seven years ago)

Who Do You Think You Are in an absolute heartbeat.

piscesx, Monday, 30 October 2017 11:50 (seven years ago)

Say You'll Be There, as much for the awesome video as for the song.

enochroot, Monday, 30 October 2017 11:58 (seven years ago)

Realistically it’s one of the first album’s singles (my head says “say you’ll be there”, my heart says “2 become 1” and the rest of my body says “who do you think you are”) but I must admit to having a ridiculous soft spot for “goodbye”

Tim F, Monday, 30 October 2017 12:05 (seven years ago)

say you'll be there

Shat Parp (dog latin), Monday, 30 October 2017 12:11 (seven years ago)

2 Become 1

chap, Monday, 30 October 2017 12:46 (seven years ago)

The bridge to “Wannabe” is still one of the funniest things ever recorded

Marcus Hiles Remains Steadfast About Planting Trees.jpg (DJP), Monday, 30 October 2017 13:33 (seven years ago)

"Mama" the only disappointment here

niels, Monday, 30 October 2017 13:36 (seven years ago)

Mama is sappy but leagues ahead of Holler

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 30 October 2017 13:38 (seven years ago)

Emma Bunton's performance on 2 Become 1 wins this for me

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 30 October 2017 13:40 (seven years ago)

I seem to remember Select Magazine (of all magazines) singling 'Who Do You Think You Are?' out as a highlight of the first album. I also remember Nicky Wire from the Manics in '96 being confused that they performed it as part of their Brit Awards performance (the one with the Union Jack dress) as he thought it was "awful"

Gholdfish Killah (Turrican), Monday, 30 October 2017 14:25 (seven years ago)

People of the world!

Tuomas, Monday, 30 October 2017 14:29 (seven years ago)

set your spirit free
it's the only way to be

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 30 October 2017 14:52 (seven years ago)

There's a couple of decent deep cuts on the first two albums that would have made great singles, I think. 'Love Thing' particularly.

Gholdfish Killah (Turrican), Monday, 30 October 2017 18:17 (seven years ago)

'Naked' from the first album stands out - not as a single contender, but it doesn't really sound like much else they did.

Gholdfish Killah (Turrican), Monday, 30 October 2017 22:02 (seven years ago)

it's the only way to be

.. shares this line with "Anarchy in the UK"

Mark G, Tuesday, 31 October 2017 12:14 (seven years ago)

...which Mel C did a cover of!

Gholdfish Killah (Turrican), Tuesday, 31 October 2017 12:55 (seven years ago)

SAY YOU’LL BE THERE from the debut for me. Love the g-funk backing track and it’s the only track where they sound like a cool group and not tacky one.

The harmonica solo is actually kind of tacky

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 31 October 2017 19:50 (seven years ago)

'Say You'll Be There' is great, yeah. That one probably has my favourite video.

Gholdfish Killah (Turrican), Tuesday, 31 October 2017 19:56 (seven years ago)

some years ago I recorded a song using the Say You'll Be There instrumental, indeed a great g-funk vibe and ofc video is undeniable

but 2 Become 1 is still the one I play the most

niels, Wednesday, 1 November 2017 07:52 (seven years ago)

'2 Become 1' always reminds me of Christmas '96.

Gholdfish Killah (Turrican), Wednesday, 1 November 2017 12:58 (seven years ago)

"Say You'll Be There" is a better song but I think "Wannabe" is a better single - it's the kind of thing no other band could really have attempted successfully.

I didn't like the Spice Girls at the time (I was the age where girls were yukky and in the warring factions of fandom All Saints had the edge imo) but I'm amazed at how well some of these singles stand up.

boxedjoy, Wednesday, 1 November 2017 14:43 (seven years ago)

I'm not sure All Saints were anywhere near as good, song-wise at least.

Gholdfish Killah (Turrican), Wednesday, 1 November 2017 14:56 (seven years ago)

With hindsight it's obvious that All Saints were a very different prospect and if they weren't contemporary peers the need to compare them would have been much less.

(old pop grudges die hard though: they were definitely better)

boxedjoy, Wednesday, 1 November 2017 15:25 (seven years ago)

All Saints had great songs but not nearly as many, they could hardly fill a greatest hits comp:

niels, Wednesday, 1 November 2017 15:47 (seven years ago)

I dunno, Never Ever and Pure Shores are better than the vast majority of the songs here.

2 Become 1 is still the best song from the two groups though - so delightfully lavish!

Custard Cream, Wednesday, 1 November 2017 17:12 (seven years ago)

'Never Ever' and 'Pure Shores' were as good as it got, but better than the best of the tracks here? I'm not so sure.

Gholdfish Killah (Turrican), Wednesday, 1 November 2017 17:14 (seven years ago)

you're also forgetting "Black Coffee" and "War Of Nerves", plus both (!) comebacks have given us some great singles as well

boxedjoy, Wednesday, 1 November 2017 17:16 (seven years ago)

I'll admit Pure Shores and Black Coffee pack more emotional punch for me than any Spice Girls single

niels, Wednesday, 1 November 2017 17:20 (seven years ago)

Rock Steady was a great comeback, but I thought the consensus on Headlines (which I don't mind) was that it was a dud.

Custard Cream, Wednesday, 1 November 2017 17:21 (seven years ago)

Headlines was such a disappointing comeback. I'm sure I read that Mel C disowned it pretty quickly. It's a shame it was so forgettable as their ballads were always so strong. Along with 2 Become 1 (which I voted for), I've always loved Viva Forever, Goodbye and Mama too.

As for album tracks that should have been singles, Never Give Up On The Good Times was always one of my favourites. I think it should have been a single instead of Stop.

kitchen person, Wednesday, 1 November 2017 18:02 (seven years ago)

you're also forgetting "Black Coffee"

Yes, I did! 'Black Coffee' is excellent, yeah.

Gholdfish Killah (Turrican), Wednesday, 1 November 2017 18:40 (seven years ago)

Headlines was such a disappointing comeback. I'm sure I read that Mel C disowned it pretty quickly.

Yeah, she did... I think she was actually against the idea of doing any new material to begin with, though.

Gholdfish Killah (Turrican), Wednesday, 1 November 2017 18:43 (seven years ago)

All Saints > Spice Girls for me. They actually had swag, SG didn’t feel like it was actually there, they were more dorky in real life, weren’t they? The SG movie ruined whatever positive image I had of them

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 1 November 2017 20:58 (seven years ago)

I've never seen the Spice Girls movie... it's the kind of thing you wouldn't really expect to be any good.

Gholdfish Killah (Turrican), Thursday, 2 November 2017 19:14 (seven years ago)

I saw the Spice Girls Bus once, it was getting a fill-up in Langley. I don't think there were any Spice Girls on it, but then I didn't check..

Mark G, Thursday, 2 November 2017 20:16 (seven years ago)

^^ lol that post was like a letter in viz.

new noise, Thursday, 2 November 2017 20:43 (seven years ago)

Hehehe!!

Gholdfish Killah (Turrican), Thursday, 2 November 2017 20:48 (seven years ago)

Rock Steady was a great comeback,

this and Scar off that album still get regular airings here.
corny as f*ck they may be, i care not.
love'em.
got the last album hidden away but not really listened to it much as it didn't make that much of an impression when i did listen to it.
was supposed to see AS this year at Camp Bestival, but the weather was seriously nasty, so stayed in the jungle/d-n-b tent checking out Congo Natty.
swings and roundabouts.

otm

niels, Sunday, 5 November 2017 11:47 (seven years ago)

Too Much should have got some, but apart from that, yeah.

Mark G, Sunday, 5 November 2017 12:12 (seven years ago)

oh yeah that's true, too much is nice

niels, Sunday, 5 November 2017 19:02 (seven years ago)

spiceworld is an extremely awesome movie wtf thread

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Sunday, 5 November 2017 19:04 (seven years ago)

I might have to watch it drunk someday.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Sunday, 5 November 2017 21:19 (seven years ago)

Yes it's awesome! I actually saw it at the theater when it came out.

LeRooLeRoo, Sunday, 5 November 2017 22:55 (seven years ago)

it is a cult classic, i saw a re-screening in a theater a few years back

definitely enjoyable in some way, alcohol would certainly help

dyl, Sunday, 5 November 2017 23:58 (seven years ago)

I think Spice World was too self-consciously striving to be a cult classic to actually become one. There's just too much defensive irony.
(I also saw it during the brief US theatrical run, and I think it probably would have been more fun if we weren't the only 3 people in the theater)

enochroot, Monday, 6 November 2017 13:06 (seven years ago)

I just... don't think I'm part of the target audience for a Spice Girls movie, as much as I like the music.

Gholdfish Killah (Turrican), Monday, 6 November 2017 14:51 (seven years ago)

lol I meant both comeback attempts by All Saints upthread, not "Headlines" which is awful.

Spiceworld is a movie full of great moments and Victoria is hilarious in it but it doesn't quite come off - it's too knowingly camp without actually pulling it off.

boxedjoy, Saturday, 11 November 2017 18:58 (seven years ago)

Oh lol of course, I'd completely forgotten about their second comeback!

Custard Cream, Saturday, 11 November 2017 19:31 (seven years ago)

one year passes...

MOVE OVER
YEAH
DON'T DO IT OVER
