Best Music TV Programme EVER?

Inspired by the No Disco thread, the best music TV programme EVER was clearly Snub TV. It provided ground level coverage of exciting new indie bands and dance acts, at a time when both musics were doing top stuff.

Snub was pretty excellent most of the time.

Depends on the performances on the particular show. Some weeks The Tube had a storming line-up, and even the OGWT could be superb (Bowie doing Five Years etc).

And I know it'll get a slagging, but Later often has great stuff on amongst the dross.

the chart show. especially the weeks when the dance chart was featured.

michael wells (michael w.), Monday, 11 November 2002 11:32 (twenty-three years ago)

snub was good yes, although i seem to remember itvs version, 'transmission' may have been better (was this dennis pennis first tv appearance btw?) depsite its 3.30am slot

still think top of the pops takes some beating though

later is awful

gareth (gareth), Monday, 11 November 2002 11:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Snub was good 'cos they made videos for little known bands. Even if it was turning up at their gig in the Bulland Amplifier and filming it. Only time I saw King Of the Slums on the box.

tigerclawskank, Monday, 11 November 2002 11:42 (twenty-three years ago)

there's another snub thread in the archives, full of reminiscences -shouldn't be hard to find.

I thought it was okay. But Tiswas was best.

As a rule music programmes are only as good as the bands on them -and if those are good you can ignore the crap presenters. I hate Jools Holland but Later's worth watching when there's someone good on - unless he starts jamming with them. When Weller was on a few weeks ago Jools was being such a brownnoser it was hilarious. Luckily Weller got the yobbos from ocean colour scene to smash the piano lid down on his fingers during rehearsal so that sorted out the jamm9ng threat.

The White Room ;)

blueski, Monday, 11 November 2002 11:54 (twenty-three years ago)

the white room was terrible!

gareth (gareth), Monday, 11 November 2002 12:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Strangely enough, tigerclawskank, King of the Slums are the band that first popped into my head when I saw Snub mentioned. Don't know why that's the only Snub feature I can remember, but there you go.

Managed to track down a copy of Barbarous English Fayre earlier this year - still sounds great.

The Beat with Gary Crowley?

adam b (adam b), Monday, 11 November 2002 13:21 (twenty-three years ago)

on an old video i recently happened upon a clip of mint 400 doing some terrible goth ballad while a stony-faced young woman at the side of the stage(obviously the girlfriend of someone in the band) held a bunch of roses and pompously let them drop, one by one, to the floor.

it did make me ponder the futility of existence, but probably not in the way they intended.

Brand:New with Zane on MTV was actually pretty cool - a slight lean towards Blink 41 clones eventually (hardly the 'alternative') but still the best place to catch top new tunes/videos if you dont have the digital channels (they showed Ladytron's new video last night, and) - tho its now just a presenter-less showcase for new 'XFM approved' releases. no live performances tho so doesnt fit in with the other suggestions here

From this fat-bloated-corrupt-side-of-the-pond (USA! USA! USA!), I think HBO's Reverb is one of the best music programs I've ever seen, and I've even got a video-tape log of some of my favorites, the Beck episode, the Black Jack Johnson Band show, the Bjork/Sigur Ros show...

Still going, Friday night in Japan, TV Asahi's Music Station:

All idols, all the time...

With your host, Tamori-san!

Wasn't 120 minutes fairly classic?

And how about Musikladen, nice name, anyway...

Mary (Mary), Monday, 11 November 2002 19:34 (twenty-three years ago)

ILM, meet Mr. Tamori, best known for long-running daytime comedy show Waratte Ii Mo (It's alright to laugh):

kephm, Monday, 11 November 2002 19:55 (twenty-three years ago)

stateside, top 3:
IRS Records "The Cutting Edge" (MTV, 80s -- when it actually played MUSIC)
"NightFlight" (USA Network, 80s)
Don Kirshner's Rock Concert (ABC, 70s)

Old Grey Whistle Test

christoff (christoff), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 21:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Kirshner was NBC. ABC had In Concert, which ranks at the top for me. And Night Flight regularly kept me up til 4 or 5 on weekends, it's a shame the promise of cable has been completely squandered for maximizing eyeballs.

nickn (nickn), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 02:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Uncle Ralph's video show on Brooklyn Community Access TV. All the vids are stolen from MTV (he tries to cover the MTV logo in the corner, but not very hard). He had Cash Money on recently giving away a fine set of rims to a lucky audience member.

John Saffran's Music Jamboree is probably the best homegrown TV show in Australia. You'll all like it too:

http://www.musicjamboree.com/

His Yiddish boyband, Jewtown, need to be seen by everybody...and yeah, he's Jewish...

Charlie (Charlie), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 05:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Jewtown link here: http://203.15.102.143:8080/ramgen/media/8633tojs_jewtown_ep7.rm

John explains: "The Christian record industry is worth ten of millions of dollars in the States. So why aren’t other religious denominations getting with the program? Here’s my boyband Jewtown with their debut single,"Down to Jewtown"

Wicked stuff. He also did a brilliant segment about MixMaster Mike nicking his girlfriend back in the early 90s. Smashing.

Charlie (Charlie), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 05:55 (twenty-three years ago)

"Wasn't 120 minutes fairly classic?"

Uh-huh...good call!

The first time I ever heard of Jeff Buckley, he was playing "Grace" live on 120 Minutes, and I swear I was sweating and goosepimpling and damned-near crying cause it was so friggin powerful.

Then there was the time that Beck (right after he first released Mellow Gold) played "Pay No Mind" (obviously quite drunk) and was making up new lines right there, drawing chords out way too long, and generally making a beautiful ass of himself.

I also think Dr. Demento's MTV show was well-worthy of a claim to greatness.

nickalicious, Wednesday, 13 November 2002 15:15 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
Does anyone have VHSs of IRS "The Cutting Edge". Same question for David Sanborn's "Night Music"? And when will someone realize that these shows should be released on DVD??

frankE, Thursday, 22 April 2004 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

What about "Pop Quest"?

(Hi googlers!)

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 22 April 2004 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I was in the crowd for the King Of The Slums gig which was shown on Snub TV, I'm glimpsed briefly trying to avoid getting squashed. It was at Manchester Boardwalk with Dub Sex supporting who were also shown.

I've been trying to track down digital copies of Snub TV for ages, anybody had any luck?

holojames (holojames), Thursday, 22 April 2004 16:14 (twenty-one years ago)

sweet Snub-my first exposure to World Domination Enterprises :) I have some "Cutting Edge" tapes slowly degrading in my dresser-when will the DVDs come out?

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Thursday, 22 April 2004 17:40 (twenty-one years ago)

two years pass...
Abbey Road to host C4 music series

I like the 'no presenter, no audience' aspect but I doubt even Diana Ross will be any good on this. would still prefer a show that's built almost entirely on new videos and scene reportage.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 15:02 (nineteen years ago)

Don Kirshner's Rock Concert, Ready Steady Go.

I loved The Tube when I lived "over there" even though Jools was a twat.

Never saw Snub but wasn't that Scott Pearing's thing? I remember when they were chatting it up.
