I don't care much for the sequence between "Put the Blame on Me" and "Wide Eyed Girl," but this is otherwise a marvelous album. It took courage to return to their synthesized austerity after two albums of mullets and MORR.

insanely, it has never been released on DVD. After 25 years of wanting to see it, I finally downloaded a rip of the VHS

"I Need You" was my favorite back in the day, because it was so straightforward and acoustic, unlike any other song they'd done up to that point. Felt so raw.

But may re-listen to the album before voting.

Title track for me. At their coldest and most magisterial. A great sad bruise of a song.

Seeing the video of 'Beethoven' on the repeats of Top of the Pops on BBC Four recently got me thinking about this album, so decided to give it another spin this afternoon. I always thought post-Touch Eurythmics mostly sounded a little too American stadium rock for me, but I think I'm beginning to enjoy this more now than I ever did, appreciating its daring mix of beauty ('Shame') and artier moments.

The fact that 'Beethoven' was the first single from this tickles me somewhat.

nothing stadium rock about this album -- as startling a volte-face from the previous album as any in rock.

It's often billed as a return to the approach of their early material, and in a way it is, but also in a way it isn't - 'I Need a Man', for example.

Imagining if they’d gotten Bowie to do the “In the dancehalls and the cinemas” lines...

It's definitely less straight ahead than Revenge on the whole, but the big production is still very much there, with one very obvious exception - not that this is in any way a problem! 'Shame' is just a brilliant, brilliant song.

All Music Guide has this down as a two star record. It fucking isn't!

Yeah - it screened on TV a few times in Australia. I don't remember it in detail but according to fuzzy memory, the clips for the singles are excerpts - it's conceptual videos for each song with short linkages e.g. Annie walking out of the set for Beethoven and out into the street to where the next song's video begins.

Okay, as someone who has always been a fan of huge, ambitious projects in music, I have to see that.

Most of it is in a YouTube playlist which comes up as the first search hit, I found. The housewife / drag dichotomy is pretty cool.

"Beethoven", jeez. I used to listen to my cassette of Savage on repeat 30 years ago but had never heard it since then. What a banger (and that video..!). Surprised my local goth/industrial club didn't spin it at the time.
