A more interesting question would be: Is math rock prog?

Is math rock prog?

I think so. With math-rock, my guess is that a lot of the musicians came from punk backgrounds, and because of that it's harder to pigeonhole them as being "prog" -- similarly, because bands like Fucking Champs play for indie audiences, sometimes folks are hesitant to just call them metal.

My standby for math rock is to say that it's "minimalist prog" (Glass and Reich style minimalism rather than Morton Subotnick obv).

I always had math rock down as King Crimson style riffs. So yes.

Personally, I'm a proud pop music loving idiot-monkey. I'm also listening to Genesis' Nursery Crime right now..."Return of the Giant Hogweed" is one of my all-time favs.

I also don't understand your "question" one bit. But I'm not very bright. :D

There seem to be a lot of bands along the lines of The Fucking Champs who exist so indie kids can enjoy music they can't admit to liking. (I like The Fucking Champs, but it's odd that I don't see any of the kids from their shows at the metal shows.) Perhaps the same thing with math rock and prog? Do math rock kids listen to Yes?

I like math rock. I also like King Crimson. But prog as a genre was never something I really got into, and have no real intent of getting into. Someone gave me a Rush album once, and I thought the guitars sounded neat but the guys voice sucked way too much for me to be able to sit through it.

Tonie Joy would deny it all.
