toby have you heard the EARLIEST scritti??

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 11 November 2002 17:04 (twenty-three years ago)

i mean the "skank bloc" 7", the "4 A sides" 12", the 79/80 (?) peel sesions.

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 11 November 2002 17:07 (twenty-three years ago)

no! well i've heard skank bloc (the track) but that's about it... is the rest of it on soulseek? if so i'll get it when i go home at xmas i guess. it's certainly not on limewire :-(

i take it it's worth hearing?

toby (tsg20), Monday, 11 November 2002 17:10 (twenty-three years ago)

it is. i can mail you a tape if you want (i don't have any blank cds right now and i think i still owe you garage cds dont i?). early scritti and c&p85 era scritti are two of my favorite bands evah, but they're not the same band. (okay, you can kinda sorta hear green's later voice emerging, but obv since you've heard "skank bloc" you already know it's a bit, uh, diff'rent.

heh, tom doesn't like it.

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 11 November 2002 17:18 (twenty-three years ago)

jess i've emailed you.

toby (tsg20), Monday, 11 November 2002 20:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Is there a comp of this stuff around jess?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 11 November 2002 20:37 (twenty-three years ago)

you can probably find a bootleg, julio. i don't know how rare the originals are (pretty damn rare, i would think), but like i said this stuff is all over the p2p services. (heh, it took me twice as long to find c&p85 [to replace my lost copy] as it did the early stuff.)

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 11 November 2002 22:35 (twenty-three years ago)

track listings of these releases? song titles?

by "4 A Sides" the soon to be (well a year or so later) "pop" scritti can be faintly heard, especially in green's voice.

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 11 November 2002 23:43 (twenty-three years ago)

P.A.s is genius!!!

Keith McD (Keith McD), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 00:11 (twenty-three years ago)

has the 1st peel session been bootlegged at all?

toby (tsg20), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 00:53 (twenty-three years ago)

i've got them collected as cd-r transfers from vinyl (de-clicked, etc with soundforge). if anyone would like a copy (free) then email me off-list.

phil turnbull (philT), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 06:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I've never been able to figure out how Scritti Politti went from fiercely DIY acolytes, to smooth ABC-styled popsters, and now to wannabe hip-hoppers. Is there a more random career path in indie music?

mike a (mike a), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 15:31 (twenty-three years ago)

It's a pretty obvious one I'd have thought - it's called "paying attention".

Missing from this thread - "She's A Woman" and "Take Me In Your Arms And Love Me" - non-album Scritti singles which are lots better than the skronky early stuff. I wish he'd done a whole pop-ragga album.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 16:06 (twenty-three years ago)

The only non-single or b side track on Songs to Remember that I really love is 'rock-a-boy-blue'.

Mike, the answer is in the politic as much as in the music: as well as being a big fan of black music in general, Green was very engaged with structuralist theory and other late 70s Marxian ideas throughout the late 70s and early 80s. The mutation from jangly experimentalists to smooth soul-givers is a conscious attempt to engage to subvert pop music, and then to engage with it on its own terms. The lyrics are something of a manifesto for his approach - especially on the bridge between the two Scritti, Songs to Remember.

'I'm the grand libertine with the kind of demeanour to overthrow the lot'

jon (jon), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 11:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Would anyoine be kind enough to send me the early Scritti singles/eps? I don't have soulseek, but I happened upon Skank Bloc and Sweetest Girls and must have more. ok thx bye.

"2ND PEEL SESSION" (St. Pancras/Rough Trade SCRIT2/RT034), 7" EP

Aaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrgggghhhh, I lost this single, I still have the sleeve and everything but somewhere along the line I managed to misplace the actual record. Aaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrgggghhhh.

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 10:30 (twenty-one years ago)

the sleeve alone is probably worth a few bucks!

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

naaah those early SP singles aren“t that expensive and hard to get.
gimme som good money and i get you some.

heroes + villains, Tuesday, 22 June 2004 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I've always found them pretty expensive, maybe they've come down in price in this post-soulseek age.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 21:47 (twenty-one years ago)

we're post-soulseek? what age are we in now dan?

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

perhaps I mean post-dawning of soulseek, so perhaps we are in the soulseek age? Anyway, for a good few years it was not easy to find those records, and when you did they usually went for 30 or so bucks.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 04:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I've checked on ebay the last month or so and the only one i caught was about 30 bucks and also i don't have a record player or much money. Whatever, I'll find them somehow eventually.

artdamages (artdamages), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 05:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm sure heroes + villains above can help you out...

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 06:47 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, perhaps i should email him my credit card number
