ethan, Monday, 21 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

So who's down w/the hardcore ??

Kool G Rap - 1st nigga Biggie - Unbelievable KRS-One - MCs act like they don't know (!!) a lot of the M.O.P. stuff.

He's been kind of boring me recently. But. I love him. (wasn't he supposed to be remixing King of Sorrow (Sade)?))))))

Tracer Hand, Monday, 21 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i've been babbling about the 'first nigga' remix over like four threads in the last month, it's glorious. 'unbelievable' is, of course, perfect. 'mcs act like they don't know' was for a long time my favorite krs song EVER and i still walk down the street on sunny days humming that cello loop sometimes although i think i've grown to like 'rappaz r. n. dainja' more (once you fast forward over the FUCKING SHOUTOUTS). that whole album is underrated in every way, i can't believe 'criminal minded' is still being passed off as being even halfway listenable when 'return of the boom-bap' and his self-titled exist with their more mature political lyrics and dj premier producing big chunks of them. big-up to the krs-produced 'out for fame' though, that's nice.

ethan, Monday, 21 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

SEARCH: the first 2 Jeru albums, and esp 'Come Clean', His mix of Blahzey Blahzey's 'Danger'. stuff he did with Show and AG... Recently: his choon on the last Jay-Z album.

DEstroy: Gangstar albums always a bit patchy...

Robin, Monday, 21 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Search: 'Unbelievable' and 'Kick In The Door' first and foremost, cuz Biggie is the best rapper I can think of that he's worked with; 'Stick To Ya Gunz' is the greatest beat MOP have ever tortured; definitely the first Jeru album, which is probably the most interesting stuff Premier's achieved over a full record, including Gangstarr IMO; there's a really good Paula Perry song from a few years ago that he produced ...but not quite good enough for me to remember the title.

Destroy: a million attempts to breathe life into shit like Group Home or DITC; I want to say the remix of Emma Bunton's 'What I Am' but it's good fun really. Is Afu-Ra his new protege? What's he like anyone?

joel, Monday, 21 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Just To Get A Rep" must be searched. One of those records it's hard to imagine being any better, not least because of the sample of Jean- Jacques Perrey's "EVA".

I wouldn't *destroy* the track he produced ("So Ghetto", I think) on Jay-Z's _Life and Times of Sean Carter_, but I do find it rather boring compared to Timbaland and Rockwilder's work on that album, which was what always attracted me to it; not a criticism, just an acknowledgement of the difference in style.

Robin Carmody, Monday, 21 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Damn, confusing syntax. It was Timbaland and Rockwilder's production that interested me in _Life and Times of Sean Carter_, not the comparative boredom, ***in that context***, of Premier's.

Robin Carmody, Monday, 21 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Woz that "A Million and One Questions?" I kind of liked that just cause it was so unlikely.

Whattabout the JANET JACKSON remix?????

Tracer Hand, Monday, 21 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

A bit obvious maybe, but my favourite Premier track will always be "Nas Is Like" - one of the first rap tracks I really went crazy over.

As for "So Ghetto" I really like it actually - that and "It's Hot (Some Like It Hot)" are my favourite Jay-Z raps on the album (he sounds so disarmingly natural, so unpretentiously nuanced). Admittedly the production isn't *spectacular*, but that guitar sample is hella cool, and I reckon the track just about edges out Rockwilder's "NYMP".

Tim, Tuesday, 22 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, I don't *dislike* "So Ghetto", it just got a bit lost in the rush of that record. That said, "NYMP" was always my least favourite track on the "proper" album.

Robin Carmody, Tuesday, 22 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, I don't *dislike* "So Ghetto", it just got a bit lost in the rush of that record. That said, "NYMP" was always my least favourite track on the "proper" album.

And "Nas Is Like"; yes, terrific.

I think "Thick" by DITC might be my favorite song ever.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Friday, 25 February 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

Both Jeru albums had some ill shit on them. Personal favorites include "Come Clean" of course, but also "D Original" "Mental Stamina" "Physical Stamina" "Black Cowboys" and of course the incredible "Ya Playin' Yaself" (although he jacked that from Junior Mafia's "Playa's Anthem" eh totally outdid them.)

I also like his stuff on J-Live's 1st album, although I can't remember specifically which tracks he made (I have the bootleg vinyl with no production credits - I'm prett sure of "Wax Paper" and the title track, though.

Austin (Austin), Friday, 25 February 2005 15:58 (twenty years ago)

Oh yeah, also the "Nyte Time" remix of Show and AG's "Next Level" - the Kool and the Gang genie grunts are a vast improvement over the Wes Montgomery loops of the original mix.

Austin (Austin), Friday, 25 February 2005 16:00 (twenty years ago)

"Hip Hop" from Royce Da 5'9''s album is prolly my favorite recent Primo beat. My all-time favorite Primo production has to be Jeru - "Ain't The Devil Happy" just cause the concept is so brilliant. I guess Jeru deserves some of the credit for that too though. And the way he uses the sample of RZA as the devil in the hook is perfect.

And that reminds me of how great "D'evils" from Reasonable Doubt is.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Friday, 25 February 2005 20:47 (twenty years ago)

Search: No Shame in my Game, My World, Mass Appeal, Next Level (Nyte Time Remix), Take it Personal, Slap Them Up, Soliliquy of Chaos, New York State of Mind, Ex Girl to Next Girl, Royalty, Come Clean, Da Bichez, Supastar, Dwyck, Higher Level

Destroy: F.A.L.A., Real HipHop remix, Wannabeemcees, Ease My Mind Remix, Suckas Need Bodyguards, Fullclip

way more good ones obviously.

"Nas is like" is the most overrated track of the last ten years.

Outta all the beats Primo did for Gang Starr i think my favorite track by them is "code of the streets" which is a Guru production.

"Outta here" is my favorite joint he did for Krs.

Favorite Primo beat ever ?..uh, maybe "stick to ya gunz".

Some favorites not mentioned :

Lord Finesse-baby, you nasty

Lord Finesse-strictly for the ladies

I just listened to "The Ownerz" for the first time in a while a couple of days ago and it seemed like he wasn't at his earlier level.

One of my favorites is the Show and AG track which is basically him cutting up the "Genie" vocals from Kool and the Gang over a stutter drum beat. Forget the name of the song.

"The ownerz" got a lot of hate but there's some real dope tracks on there like "sabotage", "rite where u stand", "put up or shut up", "skillz" and "who got gunz".

And "first nigga" remix really was glorious.

Oh come on. The only reason you stopped liking the "Ebonics" remix is because it became a hipster anthem.

it did? weird

i thought hipsters only liked 30 yr old women pretending to be lil mama

deej, Tuesday, 25 December 2007 14:59 (seventeen years ago)

Haha, I can totally see that as a hipster anthem, because it explains all the hipsters what the rappers are actually saying.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 25 December 2007 15:01 (seventeen years ago)

or europeans

deej, Tuesday, 25 December 2007 15:02 (seventeen years ago)

Anyway, I really prefer the original beat to "Ebonics", that one and "Size 'Em Up" are really hard-hitting in all their simplicity. If i remember correctly, the same dude also produced Nas's "Ether" and "The Last Real Nigga Alive", which are also great.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 25 December 2007 15:08 (seventeen years ago)

As for Premier, search "Evening News" from Cee-Lo's second solo album. That one's a rather untypical Primo beat, but great anyway.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 25 December 2007 15:10 (seventeen years ago)

Also, "Everyday" by M.O.P., another slowish, moody jam.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 25 December 2007 15:12 (seventeen years ago)
