college radio stations in your area: c/d

been thinking about this recently. where i live now (eastern PA), we have 2 biggish stations; the programming on one, despite a few great hip-hop shows, runs the gamut from 70s rock (atomic rooster, bang, budgie) to whatever that student dj happened to bring to the station that day (dave matthews band, the doors, duran duran [you know, for irony]). in other words, it's pretty crap.

the other, on the contrary, is really professional-sounding, although it's very heavy on whatever happens to be popular with the kids: yeah yeah yeahs, milemarker, get up kids, etc. (the shows, with few exceptions, all start to sound the same after awhile.)

wondering if the rest of the u.s.a. is like this ...

tony bleach (blackshoeswhitesocks), Monday, 11 November 2002 18:23 (twenty-three years ago)

i live with the mother of all "college radio stations" (in spirit, if not actual lifespan), kaos. (from which the font of blame for everything from twee regresso-pop to grunge to riot grrl can be laid, at least tangentially.) it's pretty crap, even though they play a broad range of stuff.

tony, just out of curiosity, what are the two stations yr referring to?

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 11 November 2002 18:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Dud. Huge University (Ohio State), which means classical station & not student run. No small colleges have stations in range.

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 11 November 2002 18:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Toronto has CIUT (UofT) 89.5 which has brilliant free form radio moments. The charts reported in CMJ are madeup from what I hear on the air but other then a few spoken word shows (My least favorite use of airwaves was a show for transgendered/transexual people of color) but the musical shows are a riot, though they just changed programm directors and Im not sure to who. CHRY (York) has had problems in the past but in terms of "urban" music it has its work and market all cut out for it. Ryerson aparently has a channel, heck they have a RTA program but I don't know the frequency.
Out east CKDU (Dal) in Halifax is one of my favorite examples of all that is good with campus radio both on and off air, CHMA (MTA) used to rock the marshes hard but went "folk"/"Community" crazy under recent management turning its back on the group that supply nearly all its budget, yes students! CHSR (UNB) was and still is the antichrist complete with crazy fundamentalist christian radio and nutcase hippies running wild over it.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 11 November 2002 18:38 (twenty-three years ago)

as far as i know (please please correct me if i'm wrong) the Baltimore area is completely bereft of significant college radio presence. my school, Towson, once had a great station, but it's since gone easy listening and the student station has a really weak signal and is overregulated to shit anyway. are there any schools with good stations in the area that can be picked up offcampus?

Al (sitcom), Monday, 11 November 2002 18:43 (twenty-three years ago)

college radio in london could not be more pointless

bob zemko (bob), Monday, 11 November 2002 19:17 (twenty-three years ago)

some new york / jersey ones off the top of my head:

WNYU -- standard "in"(read: current indie rock) music programming, limited schedule, a few other shows limited to popular genres; metal, ska, techno
WFUV (Fordham) -- not bad, a bit heavy on dullish folk music & celtic
WFDU (Fairleigh Dickenson) -- limited late night schedule, used to be great but required staying up till 1:15 am, now probably a bit too heavy on bluegrass & reggage.
WSOU (Seton Hall) -- consistent heavy metal!

Nothing is more frustrating then taking a drive through the east when you get a faint signal of a good college radio station. Usually after 20 minutes it's goes static.

But of course in the tri-state area any of the college station programming never held a candle to WFMU, arguably the best station in the country. (Still frustrating to tune in to though)
Thank god for streaming radio, I would hate to still put up with that.

sherri (sherri), Monday, 11 November 2002 19:28 (twenty-three years ago)

''college radio in london could not be more pointless''

I share that sentiment.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 11 November 2002 20:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Does "Eclectic" college/independent radio annoy you? You don't know if you're going to be hearing techno or bluegrass or hip hop - and sometimes, it's one right after another.

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 11 November 2002 20:58 (twenty-three years ago)

WXJM - Harrisonburg, VA

James Madison Universitie's source for bad metal and even worse indie. For the latter part of the weekday evening's, you'll hear D-Plan at least five times. my college radio station blows.

Brock K. (Brock K.), Monday, 11 November 2002 21:09 (twenty-three years ago)

No, well bluegrass annoys me but less so then hearing The Strokes, The White Strips and the OLP, 2 more American bands, IME, 2 more American bands, Treble Charger, 1 American band and then 1 British band.

Its not the American or British bands that annoy but the same five or six CANCON stars that annoy me.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 11 November 2002 21:10 (twenty-three years ago)

WZBC here in Boston is quite good. It has been for years now. They turned me on to sst, 4ad, and countless other bands, when i was a lonely highschool fuckup.
so , yeah 'zbc, emerson college, and mit all have had, or still have the goods.

kephm, Monday, 11 November 2002 22:30 (twenty-three years ago)

KUCI in Irvine, babycakes. We rock and always have. Even when not playing it. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 11 November 2002 22:36 (twenty-three years ago)

WMUA as far as Polka,Blues,Jazz,CB and B (Thats Country Blues and Bluegrass)World and Experimental Music yes but the rock shows are all about Hip indie rock,Emo and ska :(

brg30 (brg30), Monday, 11 November 2002 23:19 (twenty-three years ago)

i live with the mother of all "college radio stations" (in spirit, if not actual lifespan), kaos. (from which the font of blame for everything from twee regresso-pop to grunge to riot grrl can be laid, at least tangentially.)

Pity becuase I love the fact that "KAOS is committed to ensuring that 80% of all music played on the station come from sources other than the five major multi-national record distributors."

Sounds good in theory but haow many times do I have to hear that same K record......

brg30 (brg30), Monday, 11 November 2002 23:24 (twenty-three years ago)

we have WTSR in trenton (91.3 i think) which is pretty much crap, tried to get a show there once and the program manager basically said that you play what they get from labels and 'maybe' get to play one or two songs of your own choice an hour. fuck that. they do have a pretty cool psych show on sunday nights called "kaleidoscope" which ranges from edgar winter to the united states of america.

i do a show on WPRB in princeton (103.3). we suffer from creeping indie rock syndrome (though there are a good handful of people trying to diversify the station's sound) and our mornings and afternoons are classical and jazz... but we've got some shows like dr. cosmo, strong little legs, greg lyon, etc, that are worth listening to.

your null fame (yournullfame), Monday, 11 November 2002 23:32 (twenty-three years ago)

WDET out of Wayne State University in Detroit is really great. During the day there's the jazz show, blues show, blue-grass show, everything-ever show and NPR. The DJs are very well-informed, and at night they play lots of different things (Wilco, Sigur Ros, Sonic Youth, funk music, just everything)

I enjoy it.

David Allen, Monday, 11 November 2002 23:35 (twenty-three years ago)

for southern ontario, i'm a big fan of the mohawk college station (101.5) in hamilton. some of the hosts they have are hillarious; along with great taste in music.

dyson (dyson), Monday, 11 November 2002 23:39 (twenty-three years ago)

WKPS, Penn State Student Radio, which I'm associated with has its dud elements. Decent shows fighting against a growing trend in empty headed shock jockery. Indie fans will be horrified to learn the hours of underground rock programming have shrunk from 32 to 14 in four years.

Anthony Miccio, Tuesday, 12 November 2002 00:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Nothing in RI is worth shit.

Sometimes there's a nice jazz program on WRIU, but the jazz programs on Boston's NPR affiliate are much better.

Ian Johnson (orion), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 02:37 (twenty-three years ago)

the college station here in boulder will play a song i like about once per day. but the indie rockers probably love it, conor gets his props.

keith (keithmcl), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 04:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Tulane's WTUL is excellent.

adam (adam), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 04:31 (twenty-three years ago)

I have to plug Charlottesville Va's WTJU 91.1 (not C'ville's 91.9 WNRN which is the Avril of non-commerical stations). Jazz, Classical, Folk, Indie, totally programmed by the DJs. My fondest memories of college was there. Blues guy Corey Harris, Jagjaguwar's owner Darius V., and Rob Sheffield had a show there during my time. And while I was rock director we had Steve West and Richard Hell design T-shirts for our fundraiser (in years' past we had Daniel Johnston, Bob Nastonovich, Robyn Hitchcock, Steve Keene, Mark Robinson, Mac from Superchunk, Dave Berman do shirts.) I loved it there, it was such a community/college station. Look for a mention of the station and a T-shirt on Malk during the Slow Century DVD. I am such WTJU's whore.

Hi Anthony!

Carey, Tuesday, 12 November 2002 17:14 (twenty-three years ago)

The Boston area is lucky indeed with four major stations that do an excellent job of creating their own vibe ... yet I can still listen to all of them. WHRB's Record Hospital is as fun as it is frustrating, WZBC is the most consistent for the indie crowd, WMBR has a wide-ranging lineup and WERS dj's try too hard to be 'professional' but still can pull some good stuff out of their bags. Then again I'm a dj on WMBR so I'm biased.

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 17:25 (twenty-three years ago)

KRRC sucks, but i think it can only broadcast for a few hundred feet or so... so i guess it's of little consequence...

ko hsüan, Tuesday, 12 November 2002 17:29 (twenty-three years ago)

BURN (that being the one what I work for) varies wildly. Some daytime is appalling, some is alright. The specialist stuff in the evenings, though... fucken' A.

That's BURN, the Birmingham University Radio Network. I think it does pretty much require that you be parked outside the uni to hear it, but still...

Mr Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 18:10 (twenty-three years ago)

KALX is the college station here in Berkeley, CA. It's OK, but the management is militant about diverse playlists (within one show). That in itself isn't that bad, but the problem is, you'll hear something by a Zydeco artist sandwiched between a track by Merzbow and something by Tangerine Dream. In an abstract sense, it's pretty cool, but in reality it's too goddamn jarring and all over the board to really listen to for long periods of time without going nuts. In other words, the mix during a typical broadcast is not seamless enough to be a converted to a successful mix CD. But as a community radio station it's a nice one, and I'm glad it's around.

Rahul Kamath (Rahul Kamath), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 23:18 (twenty-three years ago)

I live in Philadelphia. When I can get it in, Princeton's WPRB is usually pretty good (in the evenings especially). It's the closest things I hear to what WXPN used to be. WXPN is okay if you like a lot of singer song-writer/No Depression (I guess) stuff, but it's not remotely what it was. WKDU (out of Drexel) doesn't do much for me either, but if I were into rave, I might like it. It's programming was never as diverse as WXPN's. Back in the 80's I seem to remembering it being dominated by hard-core punk most of the time.

Rockist Scientist, Tuesday, 12 November 2002 23:26 (twenty-three years ago)

This reminds me: yesterday I was called by someone conducting a marketing survey about radio. First they asked me a couple general questions like "Have you lived in this area for more than 30 days?" They then asked me how many hours a day, total, I spend listening to the radio. I said that my radio listening added up to less than an hour a day. Then they asked me what my favorite radio station was and I said WPRB. After that they said they didn't have any more questions for me.

rS, Tuesday, 12 November 2002 23:32 (twenty-three years ago)

I have to say that David Allen is OTM for the Detroit area, Wayne State's WDET is one of the best radio stations I have ever heard--luckily it is also broadcast from about a quarter mile away from my loft (although their signal is pretty strong). Liz copeland @ night has turned me on to a wide variety of great music, and daytime programming pretty much runs the gamut of styles.

Also WUOM out of Ann Arbor's University of Michigan has some solid programming; the student djs have decent range of taste but the signal is weak.

WFMU is truly one of the best stations ever, although in Detroit I can only listen through the internet....

webcrack (music=crack), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 02:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Dud dud dud dud dud.

Incidentally, tune in to http://radio.lancs.ac.uk/ between 6pm and 7pm to hear me DISCUSSING MUSIC. WITH A GUY WHO ONCE SAID "I mean the Bee Gees were 30 years ago, do we still need to be making dance music".

You may wish to do something else entirely instead.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 17:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Classic. Of course, I may be biased as I just came back from doing my weekly slot, but the more I hear about other college stations, the more I love mine, WMUC from the University of Maryland. Yes, like all college stations, it's obviously a little indie-centric, but we're run by a lot of very open-minded folks who don't give a shit if you play major label stuff or *gasp* "POP"!! Our schedule is very diverse, with most DJs picking a niche and delving pretty deep into the styles and genres they like to play. We've got psych shows, electronic shows, noise shows, punk shows, etc. And yeah, we're completely freeform, so everything played is the DJ's pick.

Mike Ouderkirk (Mike Ouderkirk), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

This is the thread where Nate listens to and, ergo, comments on his local college radio station

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Dud, dud, dud. So much politics and backstabbing among the staff. All the music is terrible genre-ghetto stuff, mostly indie.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

i receive two college stations, one being a galaxy-sized dud and the other being pretty good, if not classic - i can't switch on the former (georgia state) without hearing some asshole with a Jello Biafra lisp smugly droning on about the latest indie shit-sandwich they're serving up 200 times a day. Georgia tech on the other hand is actually pretty eclectic, with a lot of cool 'world' music and a few *amazing* Indian programs (though unfortunately I can never really figure out who the artists being played are).

Adrian (Adrian Langston), Thursday, 5 February 2004 05:44 (twenty-two years ago)

haha - ALBUM 88!

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 5 February 2004 08:52 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, wrek is definitely ALOT better

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 5 February 2004 08:53 (twenty-two years ago)

and i just figured out why specifically georgia tech's station would have the call letters wrek

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 5 February 2004 08:53 (twenty-two years ago)

The radio station at my college is all NPR. I despise it more than life itself. I've never heard a "real" college radio station in my life.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 5 February 2004 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

while i don't listen to much radio at all out here in SF (no car hence no radio) i do miss Detroit college radio bigtime. And while WDET is good, CJAM in Windsor is great! I've worked at both and CJAM trumped 'DET on my Civic's radio all the time. Also good out that way is WHFR in Dearborn and at night, CBC Radio Two which i know isn't quite college (actually canadian public b-caster) but Brave New Waves is the best underground radio program in the world. www.bravenewwaves.ca

ken taylrr, Thursday, 5 February 2004 22:10 (twenty-two years ago)

b-b-but I like Album 88. (I don't think the GT signal reaches here.)

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Friday, 6 February 2004 00:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Classic. I am involved in a student-run (sort of) free-form radio station and although it can be bad, esp. because we are at such a tiny campus so there is a small pool of DJs, there are a number of people who do good shows.

Duds: people will just play recognizable bands like Offspring, Coldplay, A Perfect Circle, etc, overabundance of novelty songs, uninteresting chatter, playing vinyl often means bad classic rock and 80s hits, plenty of mistakes by DJs, etc.

Classic: It has given me access to a lot of music I wouldn't have ever heard otherwise, I get to play Happy Flowers, "Sister Ray" or whatever else I want, etc.

I won't go as far as pimping my own show or anything, but give some college kids a chance, eh? We mean well.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Friday, 6 February 2004 01:59 (twenty-two years ago)

kalx definitely goes in waves as far as quality goes; last year has been great, but there have been some rub ones for sure.

WMUC at the U. of Maryland still appears to have some good programming--even if the broadcast range for the station has been cut because a Baltimore news station was allowed to increase their power (and I never remember to listen to it on the internets but only think about it when I am in my car in Maryland)

five years pass...

WRAS in Atlanta is getting fucked over. The school administration is handing over daytime broadcast to Georgia Public Broadcasting & the student staff didn't find out until today: http://radiotvtalk.blog.ajc.com/2014/05/06/georgia-public-broadcasting-takes-over-georgia-states-wras-fmalbum-88/

“This new partnership is a proverbial win-win and opens the door for future collaboration,” said Dr. Mark P. Becker, Georgia State president, in a press release. “Our students will have new and exciting opportunities in the changing media landscape, and this partnership allows both GPB and Georgia State to better serve the metro Atlanta region as well as the state.”

Ana Zimitravich, the outgoing WRAS general manager and senior at GSU, said she found out along with the rest of the student staff today. “It’s a total, complete shock,” she said. “I had no idea this change was coming.”

(nb this is not the station at which I volunteer)

smhphony orchestra (crüt), Tuesday, 6 May 2014 18:36 (eleven years ago)

I know this is probably not unprecedented, but it hurts.

smhphony orchestra (crüt), Tuesday, 6 May 2014 18:39 (eleven years ago)

103.3 WPRB Princeton can be legit

très hip (Treeship), Tuesday, 6 May 2014 18:48 (eleven years ago)

Also, that sucks about the Atlanta station

très hip (Treeship), Tuesday, 6 May 2014 18:49 (eleven years ago)

That 2008 CMJ list includes the station I managed in college. (WBWC represent!)

WCSB, the Cleveland State University station, has some terrific programs. My fave is Anti-Urban Contemporary Thang, a Friday afternoon show that plays classic soul/R&B. There's also a good classic country & western show on Thursday mornings.

Diddley Hollyberry (Phil D.), Tuesday, 6 May 2014 18:57 (eleven years ago)

there is a nice iphone app called comm radio where you can stream dozens of these stations.

mizzell, Tuesday, 6 May 2014 19:11 (eleven years ago)

WZBC and WMBR are still outstanding in the Boston area. Both are a mix of students and community members, too, which goes a long way I think.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Tuesday, 6 May 2014 19:57 (eleven years ago)

i like WVUM okay, but it's not as though there's anyone else to compare them to, locally.

Daniel, Esq 2, Tuesday, 6 May 2014 19:58 (eleven years ago)

I know this is probably not unprecedented

yeah this happens a lot, similar thing happened to KUSF here

stadow shevens (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 6 May 2014 19:59 (eleven years ago)

man that sucks about album 88. interesting they apparently had the same issues w/ lack of interest from student body that have basically destroyed wuog up here.

balls, Tuesday, 6 May 2014 20:03 (eleven years ago)

I loved WSOU when i lived in New Jersey. Pirate Radio

Prince Kajuku (Bill Magill), Tuesday, 6 May 2014 20:10 (eleven years ago)

interesting they apparently had the same issues w/ lack of interest from student body that have basically destroyed wuog up here.

As far as I know the student body had little to no say in the decision. I'd wager that GSU has way more students that listen to WRAS than GT does students that listen to WREK, but because of how the stations are licensed we are in a better position to defend ourselves, which we did successfully years ago when GPB tried to do the same thing with us.

smhphony orchestra (crüt), Tuesday, 6 May 2014 20:28 (eleven years ago)

NPR and their regional fingers like GPB are appallingly unscrupulous actors. tbh, the only times I've ever tuned into Album 88 is after dark, so this won't make a huge difference for me (for now), but I definitely feel bad for all the day listeners.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 6 May 2014 20:30 (eleven years ago)

they've taken the morning & evening drive time blocks, which is when most people are listening on terrestrial radio.

smhphony orchestra (crüt), Tuesday, 6 May 2014 20:34 (eleven years ago)

WTJU in Charlottesville, Virginia, had one of these moments. They brought in a new station manager and were going to change the decades-old format (free-form programming within categories, i.e., rock, classical, jazz, and folk) to a "roots-oriented" station with a more determined genre (some kind of AAA "Americana" type thing), but the community, students, and alumni got riled up and demanded that they keep the station as-is. It was a little crazy, but it also worked, as the UVA team leading the changes backed off, the new station manager resigned, and programming stayed as-is. Student involvement is up a bit since that moment, and fundraising is way up, but I don't think this is the typical scenario at all. The community largely funds WTJU though, the University/state makes a pretty minimal financial contribution.

grandavis, Tuesday, 6 May 2014 20:36 (eleven years ago)

Yeah, taking the reins away from the student staff between 5am and 7pm is going to kill it dead. Hopefully a long time from now, but it's inevitable.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 6 May 2014 20:37 (eleven years ago)

this is really terrible news.

maura, Wednesday, 7 May 2014 14:46 (eleven years ago)

This is crazy. I'm friends w plenty of WRAS DJs and yesterday the Fascistbook was full of anti-88 posts and I had no idea what was going on. This sucks! Also yeah more people listen to WRAS, WREK is nice if you want to hear a guy banging on a stairway for 10 minutes at 3am. Then again, WREK has College Sports, which sort of trump all non-sports-related college content. :(

What's funny to me how they're trying to frame the online stream as a problem solved. "People, people...you can still hear the programming you love!" But if it's really so great an option, why doesn't GPB just stream online and leave WRAS programming on the dial.

Why? Because they know it's ten steps down profile-wise.

the school isn't even getting that much money from this deal! they're being paid $150,000 which is what, like 5 out-of-state students?

It's the access to GPB production studios that they really want. They'll use it as a selling point for prospective media students.

Here's a thing about Album 88 my friend Millie wrote three years ago: http://magazine.gsu.edu/2011/04/spanning-the-spectrum-for-40-years/

It's quite wonderful, actually. I knew the station inspired Westerberg to write "Left of the Dial," but I didn't know it's where Gedolf first read the news report that later turned into "I Don't Like Mondays."

In related news, GSU also announced plans to take over Turner Field when the Braves move.

So yay for sports!

Thanks for posting that article, it's a wonderful read! Everyone in Atlanta is pissed off about this, because that station really meant a lot, especially for us old folks who were around before the internet really took off.

I remember hearing The Music Tapes on 88.5 and it just blowing my 18 year old mind that it was new music and not some lost thing from the 60s.

WRAS 88.5 FM officially signed on the air on Jan. 18, 1971, at 11 a.m. The first song ever played was opening measures from “Also sprach Zarathustra” by Richard Strauss, popularly known as the theme from the movie “2001: A Space Odyssey.” It was immediately followed by “My Sweet Lord” by George Harrison.
