the grammys and spotify, two more things that should be burned to the ground

thank you for providing the arguments

The "folk" category (inc. Aimee Mann and Laura Marling) was the only thing that looked good to me this year.
I skimmed through some of the top nominees and mostly shrugged: if I'd heard "Despacito" or "Redbone" or "1-8000-867-5309" out in the wild at all this year, they obviously left no impression on me.
― iCloudius (cryptosicko), Thursday, 30 November 2017 19:50 (eight years ago)
Como, Mississippi's RL Boyce got nominated in that blues/roots category. His MS blues guitar sound is worth listening to. Will probably lose to some big name blues-rock act though.
I like "Redbone" and "Despacito" too.

― Chocolate-covered gummy bears? Not ruling those lil' guys out. (ulysses), Monday, 29 January 2018 04:13 (eight years ago)
man, idk what a rap album has to do to win album of the year. it's getting ridiculous.
― hoooyaaargh it's me satan (voodoo chili), Monday, 29 January 2018 04:14 (eight years ago)
It has to be half not-a-rap-album, judging by the only two that ever won
― Futuristic Bow Wow (thewufs), Monday, 29 January 2018 04:17 (eight years ago)
surely no artist had their finger on the pulse of america in 2017 like bruno mars
― Chocolate-covered gummy bears? Not ruling those lil' guys out. (ulysses), Monday, 29 January 2018 04:19 (eight years ago)
for me mars enduring popularity is the triumph of forget-your-troubles-come-on-get-happy music at the fall of the empire
― Chocolate-covered gummy bears? Not ruling those lil' guys out. (ulysses), Monday, 29 January 2018 04:22 (eight years ago)
I'm still very confused as to how Alessia Cara is Best New Artist when she had her commercial breakthrough in 2015
― monotony, Monday, 29 January 2018 04:28 (eight years ago)
portugal the man? lol. i saw them a long time ago, they didn't seem like a band capable of making a commercial pivot
― sleepingbag, Monday, 29 January 2018 04:29 (eight years ago)
they truly out-grammied themselves with those winners
― josh az (2011nostalgia), Monday, 29 January 2018 04:42 (eight years ago)
I generally enjoy awards shows, but this was Bleak. It's like the entire show was In Memoriam. Agree with Bruno Mars asking for his own record to play again because there were too many ballads. Why did everything have to be so dour and "important"?

really a shame women didn't make music this year. work harder in 2018 ladies, we're hoping for ya!

I can't help but wonder if Lorde was being quietly punished for her BDS stance
― Simon H., Monday, 29 January 2018 15:20 (eight years ago)
so if she agreed to perform, she would have been the third wheel in the Chris Stapleton/Emmylou Harris Petty tribute? Or did they have something else planned that fell through when she said no? I mean, I like Lorde, but she's not quite on the same level vocally with those two.
― hoooyaaargh it's me satan (voodoo chili), Monday, 29 January 2018 15:24 (eight years ago)
the forces of shitness are unwavering
― imago, Monday, 29 January 2018 15:25 (eight years ago)
So U2 and Lady Gaga got to sing their own songs, but Lorde only got asked to take part in that tribute performance (despite having a top album nomination)...
Rolling Stones won best traditional blues artists! Dave Grohl and Foo Fighters won something...
Same as it ever was.
― curmudgeon, Monday, 29 January 2018 15:31 (eight years ago)
Every other Best Album nominee was asked to do their own songs, but not Lorde. It doesn't have to be BDS though, there's this one other thing that sets her apart from Bruno Mars, Childish Gambino, Jay-Z and Kendrick Lamar...
― Frederik B, Monday, 29 January 2018 15:42 (eight years ago)

Yup :) And it is a bit funny, after the Grammys pointedly snubbed black artists in favor of white women the last couple of years, that they've now managed to make it seem as if they're snubbing Lorde for sexist reasons. But they always want rappers to perform, they just don't give them awards, and hey, they stayed in character...
― Frederik B, Monday, 29 January 2018 18:08 (eight years ago)
I get that sexism is an obvious form of potential discrimination, just saying the BDS thing is a possibility I haven't seen people mention much.
― Simon H., Monday, 29 January 2018 18:11 (eight years ago)
It's not as though they've never had solo female performers before.

Ugh why do people still care and get mad over the Grammys? What year is this?
― ✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 30 January 2018 17:43 (eight years ago)
Aw, c'mon, Moka, it can't all be caring and getting mad about Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductions.
― claude rains down in africa (Ye Mad Puffin), Wednesday, 31 January 2018 12:31 (eight years ago)
You have a valid point and I apologize for getting frustrated at people still paying attention to the grammys. I wont express my hatred for the whole thing anymore in this thread. Carry on.
― ✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 1 February 2018 15:57 (eight years ago)
I'll read the results of the Grammys after the fact most years. I do occasionally wonder what 60-something-white-major-label-executives-who-subscribe-to-bob-lefsetz thinks is "happening". And then I see that The War on Drugs -- a band I freaking adore -- wins a Grammy, and I'm like, "YES!" lol
