bruce springsteen meets power pop - the trials and tribulations of small town rock'n'roll - where in the songs everyone knows something about each other. classic or dud? i think fucking class. shame that it came out of that fucking dud of a band, guided by voices!

Don Thrasher his drummer for a short period of time was in GBV, but that doesn't make it GBV.

The Dude is psycho.

how is he a psycho?

I've liked what little I've heard, but I'm mainly on this thread right now to encourage other people to answer. Why? Well, you have a week to convince me that they are or are not worth the extortionate taxi ride home from their gig in Oxford. So go on, FITE!

(In truth no band ever is worth ripoff cross-country taxi rates - god, I wish I lived somewhere where public transport didn't stop at 5pm - but it's been ages since I saw a gig so I'm going to spend the next week daydreaming and then probably not go, just like I do for every other gig that sounds good.)

hey rebecca did you check the enon review?? remember the soulseek chat??

what's he like live?

doom-e, Monday, 11 November 2002 22:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Maybe things just come to a boil when he hits Hamilton and Toronto, I don't know. I'd go see him again but stay at the back of the bar where its relatively safe.

doom-e, Tuesday, 12 November 2002 07:20 (twenty-three years ago)

doom-e, I remember, but I missed it... the newsagent had run out by the time I got there (this would have been on the day it arrived, too!) and I had a look round the website a few times but I couldn't find it there either. I bought a few other issues to see your reviews, though. Good stuff, and I was glad to see stuff I like still gets positive live reviews; when I stopped getting it it was because I realised that I never read any of it except Stevie Chick's live reviews and any local live stuff, then flick idly through till I reach the gig ads and the crossword, then fill in the crossword and forget to send it off... so yeah, when I heard SC had left I thought, "Well, that's it," but I was pleased to see that I was wrong there.

This psycho talk scares me because the Oxford venue is not very big and I like to go to the front. The cool bored look doesn't work so well if you turn up on your own, pay to get in, and could never ever look cool, and it's nice to be able to see even if you're only half the height of normal people.
