Mates, this Takecha record looks like a solid bit of January transfer window business!

i've never heard of Beatdown as a genre before! i like to learn one new thing a day.

scott seward, Wednesday, 13 December 2017 20:15 (seven years ago)

does the name just come from this comp?

https://www.discogs.com/Various-Detroit-Beatdown-Volume-One/master/45380

scott seward, Wednesday, 13 December 2017 20:18 (seven years ago)

more or less

the late great, Wednesday, 13 December 2017 20:19 (seven years ago)

the guys on that comp coined the term to describe their style - which is how the comp got its name - and it caught on among sympathetic producers

the late great, Wednesday, 13 December 2017 20:19 (seven years ago)

I don't think I've ever noticed the genre names on discogs before!

saer, Wednesday, 13 December 2017 20:28 (seven years ago)

genre names are designed to make you think bad records are good and good records are bad, its trickery and obfuscation

saer, Wednesday, 13 December 2017 21:38 (seven years ago)

straw poll: new juan atkins vocals on moodymann’s “no ufos”. classic or tragic?

the late great, Friday, 5 January 2018 22:23 (seven years ago)

i thought i was going to hate the luciano mix because lol tribal bongo minimal but it's actually pretty rad! has kind of a classic boompty beat and just the right amount of electro lock and pop and is hypnotically minimal (in terms of structure) as opposed to annoyingly minimal (no awful mid 2000s computer sound palette)

the late great, Saturday, 6 January 2018 00:45 (seven years ago)

also there's cool submerged chimes

it's a shame i had to buy the OG again!

the late great, Saturday, 6 January 2018 00:46 (seven years ago)

I think this is my favourite record of last year, and i forgot to nominate it in the poll

its Sir Benni Steil

davey, Tuesday, 13 February 2018 23:17 (seven years ago)

Pls put disco here too!

DJI, Tuesday, 13 February 2018 23:22 (seven years ago)

Cool, DJI, will do.

re: the Moodymann remix of No Ufos mentioned upthread, I think the new vocals are a bummer. They sounded fine in the sample but I was let down when I got the thing in the mail. This is okay with me b/c I didn't have the original, though, and that Luciano version is surprisingly tasty.

davey, Wednesday, 14 February 2018 00:24 (seven years ago)

i'm more into the vocals now than i was before!

the late great, Wednesday, 14 February 2018 00:45 (seven years ago)

yes they are groaningly corny ... but so are most detroit techno vocals? and so are the o.g. version vocals. so they have been growing on me.

the late great, Wednesday, 14 February 2018 00:46 (seven years ago)

It fell down a hole, lets try that again for all spiritual mashheads in suits

davey, Wednesday, 14 February 2018 08:49 (seven years ago)

Yay, NO UFOS! Remix is super.

Vocals are just of the era, love it!

MikoMcha, Thursday, 15 February 2018 16:32 (seven years ago)

I might play it out tomorrow and see how the crowd reacts.

davey, Thursday, 15 February 2018 21:13 (seven years ago)

sure, report back,

MikoMcha, Saturday, 17 February 2018 00:34 (seven years ago)

ahh sorry i didn't play it last night after all. as i was forgetting there was a love theme for the night so i didn't think it'd slot in with my set. :/ i got the best reactions to older bobbins though, so maybe it would've gone over well anyway. shoot.

davey, Sunday, 18 February 2018 04:55 (seven years ago)

Check bobbins of the past thread for some great vocals from Basile Boli and Chrissy Waddle!

saer, Sunday, 18 February 2018 06:03 (seven years ago)

thanks, will do! i've been sleeping on that thread for too long

saer, Tuesday, 27 February 2018 13:07 (seven years ago)

Yeah, so the 15 years of the Bunker comp is pretty consistently great.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=osqgCOUbicQ

MikoMcha, Tuesday, 27 February 2018 14:59 (seven years ago)

Bunker comp feels very much like a 90's techno thing to me, like microhouse or minimal never happened. Even the cover as a Tresor-style homage...

Laurel Halo was an astonishingly good DJ when I saw her a few years back, lots of Principe-style rhythmic workouts and bleepy early techno, I'm surprised she hasn't had her name attached to something like this before
