Saturation III sounds just about as good to me on first listen. Rare act that actually pulled off the three albums in a year gimmick.

first impression: the first group that has used D12's "Purple Pills" as a jump off for their aesthetic (i dig it)

Just got introduced to them when my 13-yr-old son played "SISTER/NATION" in the car. The first thing he's played me where I was like, what is this?

They're good. These guys are putting out head-turning tracks faster than just about anybody else right now. Three albums in one year, and each of them felt wild and new

yeah I loved Saturation II and spent most of Xmas blasting III.

At the least, this group stands out. I liked not loved Saturation II but feel like they have a lot of potential

fwiw I really like the latest Tyler album and it seems like he got over being a showy jerk to focus on his never-in-question musical talent so I'm looking forward to at least one of this lot doing similar in 5 years

there are a few good brockhampton songs, which is nice since we're supposed to be so impressed by them putting out like 45 of them last year

i have a hard time separating the critical discussion of them from their branding... the tail has really wagged the dog in that regard

I don't know. Are people impressed by excess? It's exhausting having to think about consuming three albums. I barely touched the first.

I'm not impressed by the quantity of their output, but by the range of ideas/voices/muses/songwriting techniques and gambits they continue to introduce on each one. Maybe it's just the sheer amount of artists involved—no given one really has time to repeat themselves or wear out their welcome—but all three of these albums feel really fresh and vital to me

also i guess brockhampton seems to be as progressive as j5 but everything else about them is pretty different

I'm only just now digging into all this mess. "Boogie" is retroactively my favorite track of 2017 (not really, but at least today).

yeah Boogie is pretty fantastic, definitely their best single

cannon is still my favourite track but it's not on any of their albums, probably because it's grandpa rap and/or too depressing

lots going on, interesting clash of aggressive synth sounds and a surprising amount of piano and strings

the album's all about those aggressive synths suddenly opening up into moments of beauty

Yeah I like this album a lot. It's not as immediately grabbing as Saturation III, but I like a bunch of the songs and the grime influences are a nice addition. Hate to say I miss Ameer because good riddance, but he was actually one of their best MCs, they don't have anyone else as lyrically interesting. Super likable band and album tho.

The inconsistency fascinates me. A mediocre rapper followed by a good one, terrible stresses and good lines, musique concrète followed by keyboards/synths. They have no idea what they're doing, and the strength of their queer politics often exceeds their abilities to express them, but this is a strength too.

For me the let's-put-on-a-show vibe of the whole thing is appealing, even when component parts are flat (which plenty are).

Probably half of all musicians don’t know what they’re doing, so I’m not sure how good of a description that is

Haven’t listened to the new one but i do agree they are incredibly inconsistent

I like their weirdness though

enjoying ROADRUNNER: NEW LIGHT, NEW MACHINE - feels a little more thought-through / fully formed than the other albums/tapes of theirs I've heard

I listened to it tonight. It sounds nice but I think they’ve a little bit too much found a vibe whereas a big part of what I liked about then was their unpredictability and random shit. So it’s most probably a better record, and most probably deserving of repeat listens, but nothing stood out at first.
