I've only got two the first was in black and white, the second was in color, luh-luh-luh.

The Smiths, "Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others"
The Beatles, "I Dig A Pony"

What've you got?

Erasure works.

There’s at least that one Beautiful South song, not sure if it is actually a reference, will probably need a ruling by a Britishes.

Okay, will accept on the condition that you at least consider also posting that on: Phrases that, when you see them, you inexplicably start singing them to the melody of something else (and then will forever be associated with that)

Can you also provide relevant clip for The Smiths as well?

"also" "as well" Pick Only One

Burru Men Meet Burryman ina Wicker Man (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 21 December 2017 02:52 (seven years ago)

Not exactly referenced in the song, but Morrissey's "Everyday is Like Sunday" video features clips from 'Carry On Abroad'

In fact, that led me to this website http://www.passionsjustlikemine.com/influence-cinema.htm which says that "Bigmouth Strikes Again" counts as well, along with some others. Who knew?

"Now I know how Joan of Arc felt" being a quote from Carry On Up Pompeii.

That webpage also cast doubts on the Carry on Cleo connection of this

but does acknowledge "Ooh I say" connection to Carry On in general.

Burru Men Meet Burryman ina Wicker Man (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 21 December 2017 03:18 (seven years ago)

there is no "carry on up pompeii".

new noise, Thursday, 21 December 2017 03:29 (seven years ago)

In fact, my Beatles contribution is incorrect. It is not "I Dig A Pony" but rather the intro to "Two of Us" in which John says ""'I Dig a Pygmy', by Charles Hawtrey and the Deaf Aids... Phase One, in which Doris gets her oats!"

Burru Men Meet Burryman ina Wicker Man (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 21 December 2017 03:30 (seven years ago)

Not exactly referenced in the song, but Morrissey's "Everyday is Like Sunday" video features clips from 'Carry On Abroad'

and the video for "ouija board" featured joan sims.

new noise, Thursday, 21 December 2017 03:31 (seven years ago)

Seems that it is just Up Pompeii!, a television series written by Talbot Rothwell. Can't find verification of that claim outside that website.

The Beautiful South song “Good As Gold (Stupid As Mud)” doesn’t seem to have anything to do with these films.

However there is their best of Carry On Up The Charts

Zelda Zonk, Thursday, 21 December 2017 04:25 (seven years ago)

The Beatles, "I Dig A Pony"

You mean "Two of Us", I think,, where Charles Hawtrey is mentioned at the start.

glumdalclitch, Thursday, 21 December 2017 04:25 (seven years ago)

hah, didnt read your correction.

glumdalclitch, Thursday, 21 December 2017 04:25 (seven years ago)

No worries. Figured that might happen

Burru Men Meet Burryman ina Wicker Man (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 21 December 2017 04:37 (seven years ago)

However there is their best of Carry On Up The Charts

Which would refer to Carry On Up The Khyber and/or Carry On Up The Jungle if not Up Pompeii!

Which then leads to Babyshambles, “Carry On Up The Morning.”

"Good as gold_ mentions "Carry on regardless" which, um, is one of the carry on films.

Mark G, Thursday, 21 December 2017 05:39 (seven years ago)

it's a knowing reference

"on the telly Sid James speaks" is just as likely to refer to the sitcom Bless This House which isn't Carry On related

I've been watching silent, subtitled carry on films all this week because they're on the TV in my local. I really hate them. I really like a lot of the actors, and their work at the same time, but carry on films are just the worst.

a Rambo in curved air (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 21 December 2017 13:26 (seven years ago)

watching thru subtitles wouldn't do them any favours tho, the dialogue itself isn't the joy

a Rambo in curved air (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 21 December 2017 13:27 (seven years ago)

Sure, but I've seen most of them before. I remember a neighbour of mine who wouldn't let her kids (my friends) watch anything other that U films, didn't let them say 'damn' or things, and was just a super-repressed person; and she had every carry on film on video (that it was possible to have). And that is kind of what carry on means to me: it's the allowable naughtiness of a very conservative society.

Don't think any of the Carry On films were 'U' certificates, fwiw. And the way that they act out a v British repression is at least half the pleasure.

mahb, Thursday, 21 December 2017 14:19 (seven years ago)

March 1984

The WORLD SHUT YOUR MOUTH LP is released. People hate it, ignore it or just plain adore it. Cope is expected to tour and, sure enough, does. At Hammersmith Palais, Cope watches from the rafters as Rolo from The Woodentops imitates his show. Cope freaks. How to follow that? During "Reynard The Fox" he breaks the mike stand and cuts his stomach repeatedly, quoting Kenneth Williams as Julius Caesar: "Infamy, infamy, they've all got it in for me".

mahb, Thursday, 21 December 2017 15:25 (seven years ago)

An obvious one is the song "Up the Khyber" by Pink Floyd. I presume the expression was in the vernacular before, but the song happened to appear when Carry On Up the Khyber was the most recent of the series.

Josefa, Thursday, 21 December 2017 18:46 (seven years ago)

(Song was not performed at Pink Floyd Live Up Pompeii)

Josefa, Thursday, 21 December 2017 18:49 (seven years ago)

Maybe, but I think the expression was well know enough before the Carry On film.

In fairness to Stuart Murdoch, “Hancock’s Half Hour” was repeated on the BBC in the mid-eighties which I guess would have been when he first saw them, assuming he did of course.

The Yummy Fur - Carry On Nurse

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Friday, 22 December 2017 00:19 (seven years ago)

(xp) I don't remember "Hancock's Half Hour" being repeated in any regular prolonged fashion. I've seen the occasional famous episode, the Radio Ham, Blood Donor, 'Magna Carta, did she die in vain?', all of which are from the later post-Sid James/Kenneth Williams period. Maybe there was a 'Viewers in Scotland have their own programmes' scenario going on.

Whiney Houston (Tom D.), Friday, 22 December 2017 00:48 (seven years ago)

I've been waiting since the inception of the thread for you to provide the Scottish point of view.

"on the telly Sid James speaks" could refer to bless this house or hancock's half hour but i'm guessing that 99% of sid james' tv appearances in the last 40 years were carry on related.
