I've gotten back into this record quite hard as of late. Turns out it was way ahead of its time and, in my opinion, stands alongside CARRIE & LOWELL as one of Sufjan's best.

anyway, I'm gonna have to spend some time deciding between "Futile Devices" and "Impossible Soul."

fell in love with the original rock arrangement of "too much" (aka "there's too much love") so hard that the deconstructed version on the album was a letdown, still voted for it.

all about those pitch-whammy'd power chords in the chorus

probably w josh here but the title track is massive

forgot how great a bunch of this album is bc of how cloying most of his previous minimalist maximalist stuff is. definitely grew as a songwriter here

He ran out of Stereolab songs to rip off

flappy bird, Thursday, 21 December 2017 19:30 (seven years ago)

that is a very weird accusation imo

i'm just ribbing, i love illinois & michigan, but listening to "come on feel the illinoise" and stereolab's "the free design" (or anything post dots & loops) is pretty startling

flappy bird, Thursday, 21 December 2017 19:40 (seven years ago)

i want to be well

johnny crunch, Thursday, 21 December 2017 19:41 (seven years ago)

stereolab's "the free design" (that title!) is pretty pastiche-y itself no?

reggie (qualmsley), Thursday, 21 December 2017 21:00 (seven years ago)

The more people ripping off Stereolab the merrier

Futile Devices for me. I hated this album when it came out but it has slowly become one of my favorites of his.

This record is the first of his I liked! "I Want To Be Well" is amazing

Went for Want To Be Well but it was close between that and The Age of Adz.

Probably my favourite SS album, never understood the naysayers. Much prefer it to Carrie & Lowell.

this is his best album and an all-time favourite.

Impossible Album just edges out I Want To Be Well for me
