C/D: The Judy's

Semi-obscure new wave-y pop from houston tx circa early 80's. First 7" was distributed in their high school cafeteria. Sizeable cult following when they were around. Do all the aging Judy's fans consider them classic only because of nostalgia? Do all their songs sound the same? Do their simple lyrics and extreme faux-pas of putting two different songs about watching T.V. back to back on "Washarama" relegate them to the "overrated" bin? My instincts say no - talent abounds and they do have their fair share of witty material, but some people disagree with me. Opinions?

The Judy's were great. I have trouble listening to anything pre-Washarama, but the albums were brilliant. Then again, I've got the nostalgia element playing in since I'm from Houston and grew up listening to them. How do you know of them?
David Bean is putting together a "Washarama" tribute album including covers by The Muffs, The 5.6.7.8.s and Lisa Loeb...not to mention my own band covering "Right Down the Line"! It's taking forever to come out, but hopefully it will see the light of day eventually!
Also, there's a fan site whose address is (shockingly) www.thejudys.com.

I'm a Houstonian as well, so I've kind of heard of them through the grapevine (though I'm too young to have seen them when they were around). I acquired MP3s of all the albums during those halcyon audiogalaxy days, but soulseek doesn't seem to yield much Judy's stuff lately. Anyway, I actually find I enjoy Washarama and previous stuff more than Moo, though I'm a fan of everything. I guess my only qualm is that I have to take it in small doses, after a while I can't listen to the lyrics with tongue-in-cheek enough.

That's interesting, I didn't know David was working on anything music related nowadays, though I did know he still had the rights to everything and kept his label running, if in name only. The only Judy's covers I've heard to date have been the Tullycraft ones.
