Always loved the guitar sound.

Eh, it's ok. I'll go with Chris and Alex over this anyday.

I guess I'm mental. Lol.

Deal's vocal on this is shiver-inducing. And the guitar is a keyboard, or did I miss the joke?

Never was much of a fan of this band outside of Elizabeth Fraser's involvement so ... I'm mental too I guess.

for pretty pretty Kim Deal vocals on a cover, give me Love Hurts w/ R Pollard. I like the original of this one too much.

This was definitely the first version I heard and I immediately liked it as a kid. So: classic enough. Certainly Deal's vocals are cool. The backing seems a little more stilted than I recalled though.

Maximum big surprise! (Nag! Nag! Nag!), Monday, 22 January 2018 12:17 (seven years ago)

Phantastic song, i don't think i have ever heard the original.

TMC got me into pretty much all of the artists they covered; tbh I rarely listen to this version anymore but it's still very nice, and certainly more successful than others they did (never cared much for their version of "Strength of Strings" for instance)

went through a massive 4AD phase as a teenager and discovering this existed was a real pleasure. I get why "Song To The Siren" is the revered TMC track but I think I prefer this personally.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

This song as sung from a female p.o.v. makes it really interesting, as opposed to the good, but somewhat trite "i'm a bad boy in love with a good girl whose family disapproves" original.

sarahell, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 20:45 (seven years ago)

imo the fact that it's directed to a sibling as opposed to the usual (the parents) makes it a little different / noticeably less trite, like it's less of a make-or-break disapproval, lower stakes (usually)

Simon H., Wednesday, 31 January 2018 21:00 (seven years ago)

Agreed, sarahell, although I've always heard the original as "i'm a bad boy in love with a good boy whose family disapproves."

mick signals, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 21:10 (seven years ago)

It's a cool song. The Deal version is just cooler to me, maybe because I'm a chick ... idk

love this take.

The first This Mortal Coil box set contained a 4th disc that featured most of the original versions of songs they covered. It was a revelation to me and I wound up listening to that much more than their actual albums.

Cow_Art, Thursday, 1 February 2018 10:27 (seven years ago)

I've listened to that ^^ a stupid amount since discovering it. Disappeared down so many wormholes because of it.

Well, now I'm gonna have to listen to my 2-CDR set of all the originals for TMC and the Hope Blister that I put together about 10 years ago.

I used this for the cover:
