Does Peggy Gou need her own thread? I have no idea at all but her new single is so nice, I felt like I was going to run into breathing difficulties while I was listening to it. Is she any good?

pretty good dj if you like techno, electro and house in the classicist tradition. recommend checking out her boiler room / dekmantel set.

hadn't heard the new one, until just now. better than her earlier productions which i thought were a bit faceless

i did buy one of her rekids 12s on the strength of the galcher lustwerk remix on the other side, which is an incredible carl craig style journey

I'm putting together my 2018 mix and still don't get It Makes You Forget (Itgehane) - it just sounds vaguely pleasant but inconsequential.

Can anyone give me a way in here? What is it that people love about this track so much?

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 28 November 2019 10:40 (six years ago)

I also liked-liked not loved-loved the track until I finally heard it out, there’s something very... comforting and vibesy about it on the dancefloor, and the evident abundant happiness it provokes in people. It’s that as much as anything else that makes it classic.

Other tracks which had a similar dynamic for me are Kyla’s “Do You Mind” and Todd Terje’s “Inspector Norse”, both of which I thought were great on first contact but never imagined they would be massive anthems that were also personally important to me - but the latter personal important ultimately was routed through their status as anthems.

Sorry for the double post

Tim F, Thursday, 28 November 2019 11:02 (six years ago)

Itgehane felt like an instant classic the moment I heard it. There’s a certain timelessness about it - like it’s so familiar and reminiscent of a million other songs yet evidently it’s own thing. And yes, it kills on the dancefloor every time.

Roz, Thursday, 28 November 2019 16:21 (six years ago)

It’s a deceptively polished track. I don’t really know what to say about it other than I think it’s gorgeous and I love it.

ingredience (map), Thursday, 28 November 2019 20:28 (six years ago)

I see it compared to Inspector Norse a lot, but they are so so very different beasts. That song is massive, anthemic and cathartic, evoking emotions of sheer exuberance. It has a climax. Itgehane is cozy and comforting (literally making you forget your worries); it flows and weaves perfectly fluidly until its done. I think it's a solid club track, but I also don't quite get the cult around it.

octobeard, Friday, 29 November 2019 19:23 (six years ago)

Itgehane is alright but I the 'chorus' melody is just close enough to the middle 8 of 'Sowing the Seeds of Love' to get the latter tune stuck in my head after a few minutes. My problem and not the tune's though!

help yourself to another slice of apple ... crumble (Willl), Friday, 29 November 2019 19:31 (six years ago)

Your problem is listening to too much Tears for Fears. There's nothing remarkable to me about Itgehane other than the lovely timbre of her voice, I prefer Starry Night. Inspector Norse really pops in a way Itgehane doesn't. I don't get that comparison at all.

viborg, Saturday, 30 November 2019 22:54 (six years ago)

peggy gou seems like a rich person which means she def sucks but would i ever write a multi-paragraph post about how she refused to organize records at her record store job (quelle scandal) where most of the kudos in the comments were coming from people who were also saying misogynist, racist, and ablelist shit, i’d wonder who was the real monster here

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 8 December 2020 12:27 (five years ago)

the comments were a cesspit. Vakula chiming in was enough of a red flag for me.

If Wang thought she was really that awful then surely he would have distanced himself from her long before now. There are plenty of articles out there about how he, as a neighbour, helped get her career started. If she was as awful as he claims then it would have been easy - and diplomatic - of him to distance himself by downplaying his support, "oh its not really to do with me, let's not talk about her" would have been sufficient.

I'm not sure why the so called underground of dance music gets upset by all this kind of (alleged) behaviour. I feel they should expect nothing from mainstream dance culture, ignore it and come to the realisation it is a separate world based entirely on being as famous / popular as possible no matter what that might take. Also, the sooner the "underground" stops aspiring to embrace the tropes of mainstream dance culture the better. So-called undergrounds are much, much better off when they devote less energy to trying to make the mainstream change and stop perceiving the mainstream as some sort of mirror image.

This 100 times, and it also applies in many other genres as well as media realms. Poetry and literature in particular would do well to dispense with the ridiculous idea that self-publishing, for example, is somehow "lesser than," which is one that has creeped into even the more strident, experimental realms of US poetry in recent years. It's disappointing and it sucks.
