sophomore album from British singer-songwriter shifting from elegant, austere piano to richly vibrant electronics. it's the first record of the year that i'm stoked to hear.

Do It is great so i'm looking forward to this
― ufo, Thursday, 25 January 2018 18:00 (seven years ago)
i want to like her and will keep checking on her every so often but her semi-sleepy piano ballads from before she started taking off have grabbed a hold of me more than anything i've heard since

just gonna leave this here

pleasantly surprised by this given that I couldn't even give her first album a complete play
― boxedjoy, Monday, 29 January 2018 10:42 (seven years ago)
Yeah, these singles have been way ahead of anything on her first album. I really struggled with that album, although it didn't help that I listened to it the same day I heard Ten Love Songs for the first time.
Do It in particular has become a favourite. I didn't hear it until Popjustice made it their single of the year. The video is utterly charming too.

This album is such a massive leap in quality, I can't quite believe it's the same artist. Really beautiful stuff.
― kitchen person, Friday, 2 February 2018 05:58 (seven years ago)
If this is all as good as 'Do It' then count me in.
― Matt DC, Friday, 2 February 2018 10:07 (seven years ago)
It’s not, but it is very good I think.
I’m choosing to pretend that LiveLounge cover video doesn’t exist for the time being.
― monotony, Friday, 2 February 2018 11:34 (seven years ago)
this album is quite good but i have no idea what a very bland piano ballad like the title track is doing on it
― ufo, Sunday, 11 February 2018 09:02 (seven years ago)
OMG @ 'Dancing With Character'.
― Matt DC, Sunday, 11 February 2018 12:58 (seven years ago)
This gets better and better as the nights start to draw in.
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 7 November 2018 21:08 (seven years ago)
surprised i never mentioned how much i love "wait for the rain"
― princess of hell (BradNelson), Wednesday, 7 November 2018 21:14 (seven years ago)
That + Do It + Atletico (The Only One) + Dip My Toe + Dancing With Character, that's a pretty high hit rate for a pop singer no one gives a shit about.
I wasn't too keen on Reborn either until the BBC used it as their montage music at the end of the World Cup.

Love Dancing With Character
― groovypanda, Wednesday, 7 November 2018 21:30 (seven years ago)
While I'm not listening to this album I half-convince myself that it's just another electropop album, but it's startlingly memorable and singular in ways I can't put my finger on.
― Tim F, Wednesday, 7 November 2018 22:04 (seven years ago)
I got a bit burned out on this album at the beginning of the year, but I just went back to it after seeing this thread revive and it sounds glorious. I wish she'd had more success with it.
― kitchen person, Thursday, 8 November 2018 02:41 (seven years ago)
Every song is wonderful, aside from maybe the title track, but even that has appeal if I'm in a maudlin mood.
― monotony, Thursday, 8 November 2018 03:23 (seven years ago)
It feels like it's the first consciously post-Melodrama pop album but even that doesn't quite cover it. I know comparing things to Kate Bush is easy and lame but on songs like Atletico she's nailed that sort of 'The Big Sky' freewheeling joyous whoop. None of the artists who are typically compared to her ever do that.
There's more interesting going on in the songwriting and performance than there is in the production, I think.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 8 November 2018 13:24 (seven years ago)
This is a good way to put it I think.
― Tim F, Thursday, 8 November 2018 20:10 (seven years ago)
Another way to say this is that while Betty Who tried (and failed) to literally recreate the singular magic of “I Love You Always Forever”, Rae is better placed to capture its sense of effervescence.
― Tim F, Thursday, 8 November 2018 23:51 (seven years ago)
Really hope this album can sneak into the end of year list in a few weeks. I've been going back to it so much and have now realised that Dancing With Character is the most beautiful song of the year.

really aside from the title track this whole record really goes
― mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 26 January 2021 22:41 (four years ago)
"rose garden" and "dip my toe" hit in particular this time through

Love the whole album, but Dancing With Character is the one. This album should have made her a huge star.
― kitchen person, Tuesday, 26 January 2021 22:53 (four years ago)
I was just thinking about this album and wondering what Rae was up to yesterday.
― Tim F, Tuesday, 26 January 2021 23:21 (four years ago)
"Do It" should have been everywhere!!!!!!!!!

I'd love to see her perform...hope she comes to the US sometime.
― DT, Monday, 19 July 2021 22:34 (four years ago)
I just listened to a new interview with Sean O'Hagan and he mentioned he just did the arrangements for her new album in the past year, so I guess there's a new album.
― afriendlypioneer, Sunday, 25 July 2021 23:02 (four years ago)
New album out next week. Really not sure what to expect based on the singles.
