The Pines!

Today I saw the new seven inch from The Pines IN A SHOP. I didn't buy iy because, famously, I haven't got a gramophone. It costs 4 euros. On the back it says 'recorded by Mike'. What a bunch of dur-brains, it's not like they're going to use the cardboard tube from inside a toilet roll, is it? The cover looks like a scene from a Iranian film. As I say, I didn't buy it, but as I wandered off, alone with my thoughts of The Pinefox and the attentions of various beggars, well it suddenly struck me that it just might become a collector's item, and perhaps I should go back and buy it anyway. So my question is, how does the new record from The Pines rate as an objet d'art as opposed to a living, breathing, decibel crunching record? Should I get it? For reference purposes, it's about the same price as a Ronald McDonald Happy Meal. And they didn't have it on CD.

But the main purpose of this thread is to say well done to The Pines and their associates, and to say how pleased I was to see them IN A SHOP.

Everything Black Tambourine put out on vinyl was reissued on one convenient cd. Everythign glo-worm put out on vinyl was reissued on one convenient cd. Everything the Shapiro's put out was reissued on one convenient cd.

Draw your own conclusions, but I rather not have 10 7 inch singles lying around again now that Im older. I'll wait for the cd and just live with the mp3s until that comes out. (Plus I don't like the Pines as much as her past stuff to folky).

It's a beautiful object, PJ - and you should own it (which is not the same thing as saying you should go back and buy it - we'll be in touch...).

What's this I hear about MP3s? What's the royalty rate on those then? Leslie may be right about those compilations, but, bloody hell, how long was the wait? About 8 years in the case of Black Tambourine?

You can capture all the vinyl-only Pines stuff on a single CD but, by early next year, not all the released Pines material (across both formats) *will* squeeze into an 80min digital jumpsuit, so some will be left off the proposed comp. All depends on how many versions of "Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)" we include.

this reminds me - the Pinefox has been a bit quiet lately. obviously too busy doing pop star stuff.

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 23:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mike, has anything been released since the Annika single? What's comig up in the near future - and will you be seeing Mr. Hopkins before he travels to the United States?

marianna, Wednesday, 13 November 2002 11:28 (twenty-three years ago)

I can catch up with the Jerryboneses before we travel if some kind of pop courier is required, Marianna.

I love the Pines. "I See Stars" live the other week was bewilderingly great.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 11:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Tim! I would like to get a package of Pines stuff together for my friend/radio station in Boston. I am spreading the Pines love. :) Do you take cash on delivery?

marianna, Wednesday, 13 November 2002 11:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Marianna: unless there's a comp track you're missing (Red Square, Papercuts, Chickfactor), I expect you have everything (Long Lost Cousin, Becalmed, Annika singles, the split with Sweet William). The Xmas EP (which covers tracks on another couple of comps) and the Jimmy/Mary wedding thing were private CD-R specials. The Cat's Miaow tribute and the FoxyBoy EP have yet to see the light of day (the latter is our fault: artwork). There's another five-tracker in the works.

Tim: possible to have a fleeting meeting this evening/tomorrow? I have a NYC metrocard with $6 of credit for you.

DV: I expect the Pinefox is off doing very non-Pinefox things. Good for him.

I had a dream about The Pines recently. They were being featured in the Daily Mirror, which, in line with its desire to return to serious reporting, had extended this policy to culture. "No more Atomic Kitten from us! From now on we're going to feature great new bands like The Pinis!". "That's a shame", I thought, "The Pines get all this great coverage, but they make a typo in the name of the band". And then I thought: "it could be worse... they could have got the 'i' and the 'e' the wrong way round".

Mr Freud to thread.

Mr. Freud = Clement or Lucien?

Yes, yes. I'd heard rumors of his sudden move into silicon lithography and microprocessor design. Well done The Pinefox.

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 13:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Ain't nuthin' on my mobile, Tim. Is this is going to be one of those days when a second message asking "Where the hell are you?" in four hours' time pushes the original one through?

JtN: I had a dream last night where Mark 'Pipas' Powell was on TOTP, playing guitar for a mostly female punk band. And I had to subtitle it. I suspect most of my dreams from now on will have one of the above elements.

pines? website? pffffffffffffffffffffff.

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 15:12 (twenty-three years ago)

(that was my (ineffectual) way of suggesting that mike uses his newfound MAD HTML SKILLZ and some of that unused webspace he has lying around and creates one before someone else does) 8)

koogs, Wednesday, 13 November 2002 17:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I had a dream that 'The Onedin Line' was back on and 'Lincoln Cathedral' was the theme tune.

Why is this record on a Spanish label? Is it for tax purposes?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Thursday, 14 November 2002 19:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Not the Pines website, but a website with some info about the Pines can be found here. It's kind of sparse, but there is a discog and an mp3. Plus you can check out Pipas there.

I wonder if Dr C has seen the discussion board? It looks remarkably like one of his pisstakes.
