Music from Memory (Label) - Search and Seek

I don't think we'll be destroying anything but because the stuff they release is so broad and, while it's mostly been reissues in the past they are putting out more and more new recording specifically made for the label. Sometimes it's not even easy to tell the reissues from the new stuff. Then there are the compilations (so, the old stuff is not strictly reissues) I think a dedicated MfM thread would be useful.

Lots of enthusiasm from Gaussian Curve album on the albums poll. It's very good, particularly good for working to. Like gr80 on that thread I think the first album is even better. I had no idea until that thread that Young Marco was in the group.

The release I particularly like is Robert Musci's Tower of Silence, which seems to be from the mid 80s but some of it is more recent. Regardless of the sources it does sound very much of a piece as an album. It is absolutely glorious and you need to listen to it RIGHT NOW.

sorry about that garbled opening paragraph.

Heavy Messages (jed_), Thursday, 1 February 2018 00:04 (seven years ago)

yes, i was listening to "tower of silence" on my way to work today!

i picked up gigi masin and joan biblioni reissues but have not gotten too deep into them yet

my favorites so far are system's "vampirella" (incredible dutch proto-techno from 1983) and leon lowman's "liquid diamonds" (amazing vaporwave funk from 1980)

"tower of silence" is also on apple music, as is an album of his (some tracks overlap w/ "tower of silence") called "the loa of music"

this is my favorite off "tower of silence"

the comp of brazilian electronic music they put out was superb. there's a european equuivalent to that coming out in the next couple of months too

also the tracks I've heard off the new kuniyuki takahashi comp have been very lovely

The label compilation from last year came with a live mix from Chee Shimzu which is really good, exploring the ~dancefloor~ side of what they do. I love this label so much!

boxedjoy, Thursday, 1 February 2018 12:42 (seven years ago)

The System is British, not Dutch AFAIK. The bio says he worked with Duran Duran and you can hear the connection.

Not checked out the Geoffrey Landers comp properly but 'Breedlove' is of course classic.

Noel Emits, Thursday, 1 February 2018 18:36 (seven years ago)

Yeah, this is the English System.

Great stuff in this thread btw

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 1 February 2018 18:41 (seven years ago)

oh duh, i misread the info. music from memory is dutch!

the late great, Thursday, 1 February 2018 19:20 (seven years ago)

bookmarked, thanks y'all

sleeve, Thursday, 1 February 2018 19:20 (seven years ago)

Yeah, thanks for starting this - I like a lot of what I've heard from this label so far but am realising I've got some catching up to do.

Gavin, Leeds, Thursday, 1 February 2018 19:27 (seven years ago)

the system sounded very early talk talk-ish to me, back when their label wanted them to be the next duran duran. has anyone head the rest of their album, like the tracks that didn’t make the ep?

faust apes (NickB), Thursday, 1 February 2018 19:28 (seven years ago)

I wish these LPs were less expensive to buy in the States. I love the Gaussian Curve and Gigi comp, a good deal of Outro Tempo, and that Dip in the Pool 12". A lot of the others I've heard go in one ear and out the other, but I very much like this label's aesthetic overall.

Did anyone pick up that Joan Bibiloni comp from a few years back? I'm in love this track:

What I have heard of from the Garrett LP on Music From Memory is dee-lish. (Garrett AKA Dam-Funk.)

henry s, Thursday, 1 February 2018 21:34 (seven years ago)

These guys put out great stuff, was just listening to snippets of the Kuniyuki album earlier today. The Vito Ricci comp they put out is also great and hasn't been mentioned yet. Also looking forward to the upcoming "Uneven Paths" comp referenced upthread, as well as the one collecting ambient tracks by Terekke.

Paul Ponzi, Wednesday, 21 February 2018 15:19 (seven years ago)

That does look awesome. Walhalla records from Belgium released two great (well, I only have vol. 2) compilations of Belgian new wave/synth acts from cassette releases.

On topic, apart from the already mentioned Outro-Tempo and Gaussian Curve records I have/love the Denis Mpunga & Paul K. (Congolese/Belgian percussion/synth collab) and Dub Oven (Californian synth/funk/punk) EP's. Basically I check every MfM release my local record shop gets in...

MikoMcha, Thursday, 1 March 2018 08:33 (seven years ago)

Been watching this label since I discovered it a few months ago.

I recommend the Geoffrey Landers compilation they put out. "Say You'll Say So" got me hooked.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IGsr-wCiXqM

Millsner, Thursday, 1 March 2018 10:25 (seven years ago)

I had been aware of it more or less from the beginning cuz I was living in Amsterdam and had some friends would DJ for Redlight Radio and buy stuff from Redlight Records, but really only paid full attention after this profile on Tako in RA - https://www.residentadvisor.net/features/2530 Gives a decent impression of the 00s crate-digger spirit in Europe, especially after Discogs. It's actually a bit crazy how many of those records have now been re-released even since the feature!

In general, MFM strike me as best case defense of retromania.

MikoMcha, Thursday, 1 March 2018 10:49 (seven years ago)

I wasn't really sure where to put this but it has that 80s 'woody' sound and this seems a good a place as any: jazz album from 1983, with synthesizers and vibes, much of which wouldn't sound out of place on a Gigi record/DJ set.

Thanks for the heads-up!
Sort of sounds somewhere btw Penguin Cafe Orchestra and Mother Mallard/David Borden (looks like I already had this Chernicoff album wantlisted on Discogs though, yet another sign of listening to too much music)

Alongside his trio collab with the younger Dutch residents as Gaussian Curve, am still holding out for a synth duo album on, say, Sacred Bones (or MFM, ha) btw Masin and A. Howarth, if only so that they could be billed as Gigi/Alan

this is great, thanks. i like it more than the mlo reissue tbh!

she freaks, she speaks (map), Tuesday, 30 September 2025 20:27 (two days ago)

only thing i'm not loving is this inspirational context:

Side one of the album was created at a time when Tye had been exploring ideas around artificial intelligence, delving into books such as ‘The Physics Of Immortality’ by Frank J. Tippler, ‘Novacene’ by James Lovelock, and ’12 Bytes’ by Jeanette Winterson, seeking an alternative to the prevalent, negative views of AI. He was also inspired by the Buddhist perspective of AI as an integral part of consciousness evolution, as evidenced by the creation of a Buddhist robot that preaches in the Kodaiji Temple in Kyoto.

but it's not like you can hear that in the music really.

she freaks, she speaks (map), Tuesday, 30 September 2025 20:34 (two days ago)

lol, yeah i did read something to that effect, but yeah, didn't notice it in the music. maybe he got ai to come up with this blurb of stuff he can say inspired the record.
