Did anyone check this out? It's way better than I expected, probably the best post-Fela afrobeat that I've heard (even if they are his tunes). The mc's mix in really well, and the beats are hot as shit. I think it's Femi's band that does most of the tracks, along with some stuff by ?uestlove and Tony Allen...it's also nice hearing this sort of thing with modern production (loud drums!).

I really like Gab & Lateef's "Kalakuta Show," especially. But what the hell is that Sade track doing on there?

It's a really good compilation. Particularly the second half, in which people are more free with their interpretations.

I like the Sade track! OK, it's kind of a cop-out, she probably had nothing to do with it, but it's a nice remix, the music fits... even if her voice sounds quite detached.

Fave tracks:

Water No Get Enemy (D'Angelo & co)
Gentleman (MeShell Ndegeocello & Yerba Buena)
Trouble Sleep Yanga Wake Am (Baaba Maal & Taj Mahal)

Yeah, the Sade track may not quite fit but it's nice all the same. My favorites are Shuffering + Shmiling (by far), Kalakuta Show, No Agreement (man, Archie Shepp sounds great in his old age, and it also makes me want to check out some of Tony Allen's current stuff, not to mention some African hip-hop), and Gentleman.

"I really like Gab & Lateef's "Kalakuta Show," especially."

Exactly what I was gonna say!

I love the production on it, it's great to hear Tony Allen's beats so crystal clear and LOUD. :D

i'm pretty dammn happy with my copy, even tho the album is about two years behind schedule.

Current fave is tracks 6-11, it seems to work (for me) as a suite
Water Intro
Water No Get Enemy (D'Angelo & co)
Gentleman (MeShell Ndegeocello & Yerba Buena)
Tears & sorrow (Common, MeShell & Djelamedy Tounkara)
Shakara/Lady Pt. 1 (Cheikh Lo)
Shakara/Lady Pt 2 (C. Lo, Les Nubians, Manu Dibango)

Great compilation.

two months pass...
I just heard a small sample of this today while I was at Tower. I was surprised by how good it sounded. I didn't really listen to enough to feel sure of it, but I think I might pick it up. (I feel a little silly doing so, however, since I don't own any Fela Kuti CDs. (I want to get whatever album has "Water No Get Enemy.") In fact, I think I might buy this for my habibi, since I think she likes a few of the people on this CD (D'Angelo, at the very least) and it would be "educational" for her.

Fela purists might be disturbed by the appearance of two non-Kuti tracks--Kelis' "So Be It," and Sade's "By Your Side." But ultimately, they fit the album's feel, and Heck desperately wanted to include a contribution from Sade, Nigeria's best-known artist.

"I wanted her to do 'Trouble Sleep'--it's Fela's only slow song, like a blues lament, and she does that kind of thing so well. But she doesn't record tons of stuff, so [she] offered a re-mix of 'By Your Side,' with Fela samples instead."

Does anyone know who the MC is who does the "Back in the day I used to work in a bookstore" section on "Suffering and Smiling"? It's not so much what he's saying, but I think I like his delivery. (Er, flow?)

eleven months pass...
Question: are the vocals on the MeShell Ndegeocello track typical of her style? (Because I do not enjoy them at all, and will stay away, if this is the sort of thing she does.)

As if anyone ever answers my questions on this thread.

*sigh*

Talib Kweli is the mc you're talking about.

I can't remember Meshell's track very well, but what don't you like about it? She sings. In a low sexy voice. And plays great bass. Maybe better to check out her Basement Jaxx cameo instead?

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 26 January 2004 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

She doesn't sing much, she mumbles the same things over and over again, in a voice that is meant to sound cool, I think.

Thanks about Talib Kweli.

Rockist Scientist, Monday, 26 January 2004 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, her Basement Jaxx tune is kinda talky as well (but her voice does sound cool!), but she can definitely sing.
