Records you've bought but never played

Browsing through a stack of cds the other day I came across an alb - 'Cats and Dogs' by Royal Trux - that I bought ages ago but had never ever got around to playing. So my question is, do you always listen to everything you buy pretty much straight away, or do you allow certain discs to settle down into the 'collection' unheard, unloved and forgotten?

done this with the last Low album. bought it, but haven't felt in the mood to play it...

If it's one of those cd's that come with Uncut or Q they go straight into a bottom draw and only see light of day again if I need replacement parts for broken cd cases.

I don't think I've got any albums that I've never played at all, but a good number of them I've not listened to all the way through. Like Tom, I'm not a huge fan of albums. I often listen to the first few tracks or skip to my favourite tracks, especially with compilations of old stuff. And I've only just played the Avalanches album right to the end, despite listening to it lots over the last few weeks. The the post CD era, most albums are just too long to hold my attention all the way through.

I still haven't played my Best of Ricky Nelson CD.

And those spare copies of Louder Than Bombs and 69 Love Songs remain virgin too.

Found a few Sub Pop promo albums (cardboard sleeves and all!) for two buck a 'pop' so I bought them. Still haven't listened to the yet. Probably not going to.

The last Clientele single (split w/ the Relict), because I haven't got a record player.

I've never made it all the way through L'Ivresse De La Vitesse (think thats its name) by Paul Dolden.

Undoubtedly tens of things I've got from the MVE bargain shops at one time or another. For some reason the first Passions LP springs to mind. I think I played one track and it was ghastly.

A doo-wop compilation I bought in Borders the other week which is probably really good but I'm not in the mood for.

Von, the first album by Sigur Ros. I ordered it specially from Denmark. Only played it once - it emitted a low hum for a few minutes, I switched it off, intending to give it a jolly good listen in a quiet room sometime. Never have. Play their other album all the time.

Usually I can't wait to get listening to my new purchases. However, there's one album I haven't got round to listening yet, even though I've had it for a year now: Roxy Music's Stranded on CD. And it's not that I'd want to avoid post-Eno Roxy, because I quite like County Life and even bits of Siren. The perverse reason for this might be that I own all the other Roxy stuff on vinyl and play them all the time and (this is sick!) Stranded on CD just doesn't fit into that series of (vinyl) albums...

THese days its more like "Tracks You've downloaded from Bearshare but not listened to" . Of which I cite Ursula 1000. I know I know , he great blah blah. I just like lyrics though, you know?

Kid Koala is the only one I can remember never having even popped in the stereo. It's gathering dust on the pile of unplayed records.
Of course there are records that I only played once. Those will get another chance one day. When I am deaf.
There's also a stack of promos. I used to throw them away. Now I just give them the poor bastard who finds the time to review some weird Greek concept album about fluffy bunnies fornicating in elevators.

Reynard, do you have nowhere left to go to amaze and horrify us simultaneously? I still shudder every time I remember standing around in the souvenir shop on a preserved steam railway in Sussex (FX: horrified realisation of just why that strange Carmody bloke hates heritage culture so much) with "It's Late" playing on the radio, and it's close on 10 years since that incident occured ...

To answer the thread: something by DJ Krush. Something by Galaxie 500. A few others here and there.

I've bought "melody Inn" by Idha for less than a dollar knowing that I would never play it. And I didn't. Pixies "dig for fire" 7" and some other things I got in vinyl.

I had a copy of Talking Heads' 'Fear of Music' shrink-wrapped in the US box on the wall above my stereo for several years, then some pissed fool ruined all the fun.

A Faust "two albums on one CD" package. Probably just didn't get listened to cause I bought so many other great albums at the same time. ::makes mental note to listen to it as soon as I get home::

It's OK, though, as often things which slip through the cracks resurface years later to become slow-growing favourites. It's more to do with my binge and purge record-buying habits than the quality of the discs.

Side two of (I'm) Stranded by the Saints. Side one is just so intense and great that I didn't want to face the disappointment of side two being crap (sad I know).

three years pass...
I've always listened to everything I buy ASAP. Sure there's some things I've only listened to once or twice, but I don't own any CDs I haven't listened to except maybe some comps that were free inside magazines and such.

I have a few box sets that I don't think I've made it through all the way yet (Carter Family and Louis Armstrong boxes on JSP). Also some deluxe edition bonus discs that I haven't played yet. I was given Sigur Ros Agaetis Byrjun as a gift a couple of years ago, and I still haven't played it.

a bunch of 'classic' albums i bought back when i was trying to educate myself, even though i had no desire to hear them. i should probably sell them back.

Most of these are still in the plastic wrap...

* An Al Green best-of, which I appear to be saving for a rainy day. I have a decent soul collection that I actively listen to, so I'm really not sure why I haven't cracked this one yet.

* Boston's Greatest Hits. Bought when I was feeling nostalgic for my childhood, when my Dad played Boston around the clock.

* "Tubular Bells", Mike Oldfield. "Hey! It's a classic album! It's only $4.99! Why not?" Guh.

* A couple of Mixmag /MUZIK (r.i.p.) compilations that looked enticing in the newsstand shop.

* "Abbey Road". And I grew up on those guys.

"Music For Supermarkets" by Jean Michel Jarre (No, just joking :) )

I think the only ones I can think of are a few of those free CDs that have followed Uncut or Mojo.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

we have a suzi quatro cd I know for a fact has never been played. I think my wife bought it.

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

We have the Best of Chas and Dave which has never been played. I bought it for 25p out of Oxfam and figured an occasion may arise when we may want to listen to it. That hasn't happened yet.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 21:02 (twenty-one years ago)

i bought the last stereolab and an older princess superstar like 6 months ago and have not cracked the wrapper. i can't even begin to enumerate all the promos sitting in front of me that i'll never listen to

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Tuesday, 5 October 2004 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Chicano Power!

I've had it wrapped for about 2 years. I keep meaning to find an afternoon to delve in.

one year passes...
Wedding Present-Watusi CD I bought it in 1994 and to this day have never played it, going to get it out right now.

All three of the Field Mice reissues from last year. The last Aislers Set cd, I downloaded it, but never played my actual copy.

svend (svend), Friday, 23 December 2005 05:33 (nineteen years ago)

Watusi is good. Some great pop songs. Try out "Swimming Pools, Movie Stars"
