I don't think I ever took note of the machine used on My Addidas. Is that the old emu sp12 (pre-1200)? I think so...
Big shock for me today. I always took note of Rubin's 808, 909, and tape loop manipulation (ok, Steve Ett's manipulations), but I never noted the machine on this.

Yeah I always thought it was ironic that it was their breakthrough hit bc it was their worst rap to date, maybe ever

back to the main topic: run calls this particular sucker m.c. a "sad-faced clown" twice in this classic. the best part is the way he says it: "you're just a sucker m.c., you sad-faced clown." as if, up until this moment, run only knew this guy as a sad-faced clown. but today, friends, is a disappointing day as we find our friend run has come to the realization that his sad-faced clown acquaintance was only putting on the façade of being a sad-faced clown and was, in fact, this whole entire time, just another sucker m.c.
sigh.
and a hiphop classic was born. well done, gents!

but fr they had a hard time topping "sucker m.c.s" didn't they? that could've been the only thing they ever did EVER and i'd still have probably about the same amount of reverence for them that i do in this timeline. there's classic and then there's songs like fucking "sucker m.c.s" that just immediately co-opt everything within earshot.

It's also one of the great beats that are drums / percussion only

Fun fact: one of the first albums I owned was a cassette of Yougher Than Leather that came without an inlay or cover in an Our Price cut out bin.
I drew my own inlay based on how I figured it might look, the words "Run DMC" in huge KLF-style letters except red and metallic grey, stylised like Acme magnets in a Roadrunner cartoon.
I also had no idea what the track titles were, so I guessed them. Turns out in most cases I wasn't far off.
