Cool, hasn't realized the new one was out already

The new album is terrific ("phase modulation shuffle" in particular). I liked the last album but this is even better

tim gane has such a perfectly realized aesthetic for song titles
queuing this up on spotify and pumped to see a 16 minute track as track 1

Not crazy on the new one, hopefully a grower. Wouldn't recommend getting the limited clear vinyl (sold out now, I think); why I didn't learn from a lifetime of coloured vinyl disappointment and just get the black, I don't know. Lots of surface noise on mine - locked groove on side D though! Listened to that for 15min the other night. Previous CoAM (black) vinyl releases have been fantastic quality.

I got the black vinyl and it sounds great. I was bummed I missed the clear (they went quick!), but your post makes me feel better about that. I got burned on the Slowdive silver vinyl. The guy in the shop even told me he had heard of issues with it and I still wanted the color variation. I'm an idiot.

really enjoying this
― global tetrahedron, Thursday, 29 March 2018 17:51 (six years ago) link
Yeah this is good. Game's guitar work is more prominent here than on the first LP - whether it's rhythmic punctuations or shimmery lounge chords. Synth wise it's heavier on the saw tooth and more brittle wasp sounds and live percussion is sprinkled throughout the record mixing seamlessly with the drum machines.

Tbh I find them too maximal to elicit heavy rotation from me

prefer the new one to the last LP at this point - seems more consistent style wise and more fun

I like the new one more overall, but “tardis cymbals” from the last album is still my favorite track

Can’t really parse the new one. Definitely a band I feel is missing something, likely laetitia who elevated even the most samey lab tracks to another level. Unfair maybe but I prefer the first overall
― Ross, Wednesday, 15 August 2018 14:05 (six years ago) link
One thing that's struck me is how strong the songwriting is on Laetitia's recent albums vs Caverns. Her songs also sound a lot more like mellow Stereolab. I always thought that she only contributed lyrics with Stereolab and that Tim really wrote all the chords and melodies, but I'm wondering more and more if that's not really what was happening.
― Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Wednesday, 15 August 2018 14:19 (six years ago) link
monade records are all really great too - mellow stereolab is a good comparison xpost - definitely with monstre cosmic the biggest difference was some of the synth sounds, being that it is a totally different band. cavern EPs and the first LP are solid, but it feels like Tim could churn out endless repetitions of this style ad nauseam - sure it is a little different than the last two lab records which were made in such a mathematical way that it barely felt like a band anymore, just pieces copy and pasted onto disparate arrangements
― Ross, Wednesday, 15 August 2018 15:34 (six years ago) link
when i was younger i would just eat up anything the lab, sadier or gane did without much discretion - but i think when you get older you have to cull what you think is good or bad, and there is so much material there is bound to be some ambivalence
― Ross, Wednesday, 15 August 2018 15:42 (six years ago) link
It's strange to me that all the Caverns stuff sounds so similar. It seemed like Tim felt that every Stereolab record had to have it's own particular sound, and that he didn't want to repeat himself.
― Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Wednesday, 15 August 2018 15:50 (six years ago) link
yeah, totally. the biggest difference here that i can tell is that it feels more live, and the re-appearance of their Peng drummer does not hurt, he is seriously amazing. but like the sound of this is not a million miles away from stereolab
― Ross, Wednesday, 15 August 2018 15:53 (six years ago) link
the intro track on the new one feels like an inferior intro track to the preceding record - same kind of long motorik opener, but less engaging for me - probably should listen to this record a few more times to see if my indifference changes
― Ross, Wednesday, 15 August 2018 15:55 (six years ago) link
yeah this grew on me when i put it on while drawing...maybe i just find music like this tough for active listening

On vinyl too from selected UK places. I just bought from Bleep. Norman’s allocation may be sold out already.

They went for something totally different on this OST. I am enjoying it greatly. No kraut-rockin' so far, but a lot of nice ambient bits.

New single on Duophonic by Ghost Power, who are Tim Gane and Jeremy Novak of Dymaxion, one of my favorite NYC bands in the late 90's- early O0's
https://duophonicsuper45s.bandcamp.com/album/asteroid-witch-inchwork
Years ago I read some blog that compared Daryl Hall's sacred songs to a wave motion machine tilting back and forth, with the ratio of fluid slowly shifting from side to side. This is just like that, but with Dymaxion at one end and Cavern at the other.
I don't know whether to post this here or bump the Dymaxion thread- whatever. Anyhow, the 7" is gone everywhere already unfortunately.
