Accents

I've been listening to Kate Bush's The Dreaming lots. I mentioned this to Sarah. She likes the album too. We agreed that we loved it when KB puts on accents, even though they're not very good. I decided to start a thread asking people about other examples of pop singers putting on accents.

(Or you could just talk more about Kate Bush)

I love her Australian accent on the title track. I haf nevah evah heard an Australian talk like that, which is exactly why I love that track.

U & K question Tom: what do you think of the donkey???

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 10:04 (twenty-three years ago)

You'll be delighted to know Tim that her cockney crim accent on "There Goes A Tenner" is just as stage-school poor!

I love the donkey, obv.

Must chime in to give my support to the donkey noises.

U&K: Cockney Translation by Smiley Culture (I know this is kind of obvious, but what the hell).

Fortunate Hazel! Hello!

its fun listening out for Mike Skinner's occasional lapse back into Brummie pronunication on OPM

example: on 'Dont Mug Yourself' he says 'last night was some beer lairyness' whereas a true m/cockney would pronounce it 'larst night was some beer lairyness'

also, what is the deal with Avril Levigne's accent? just that bit on 'complicated' where she goes 'when you strike your pose' and she's very british suddenly - surreal

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 12:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Cor Blueski he sounds like a mild Brummie all the way through to me.

'when i'm sixty four' sounds very much better once you notice macca's (also poor) scottish accent as he sings "grandchildren on yr knee"

The bits where Skinner lapses in and out of accents on Too Much Brandy are my favourite moments on the album.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 13:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Steve Marriott loses the accent in Lazy Sunday halfway through to make the soung sound more 'serious'.

Also, was Syd Barrett's accent supposed to be cockney. It sounds much more like Australian if you imagine it spoken.

John Cale's accent on "Graham Greene" off Paris 1919 is excellent if slightly baffling.

I'm sure the Proclaimers were laying it on a bit thick.

Missy's attempts at Jamaican on Trina's 'Rewind That Back' are brill.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 14:46 (twenty-three years ago)

TS: Missy's JA accent vs Sting's JA accent

the howling scouse accent of The Coral's singer on 'Dreaming Of You' is pretty nice too...sometimes i really wish Heidi from Sugababes would just sing more scouse heh

Does Blur count on this thread, given Damon's 'mockney' reputation? On everything Jim Kerr sang around the time of Love Song, Someone Somewhere etc, he sounded decidedly French, consciously or otherwise: 'RRrrun, tu me, come onnnne tu me, please, speed yourrr luuurrrve tu me' This is especially the case with words ending in '-ation', of which there seem to be many in Simple Minds songs of the time.
