my take is: two of the greatest records in rap history on one 12" (and i'm not even the world's biggest wayne stan like that but these were undeniable), at the time the heads' take was that "a milli" was great & ppl were torn on "lollipop." IMO lollipop ended up being the more important record, the more creatively significant, the more emulated; at the time i also liked it more, and it had a slight edge in popularity but was seen critically as the lesser song. I think the people were right on this one, though. the aesthetic distinctiveness of "lollipop," taking what dancehall and t-pain had done and elongating it, letting it meander...it's 5 mins long but could be longer & i wouldn't mind, you can just kind of live inside it. plus the obvious contributions of static major (RIP), gives it the edge for me

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Thursday, 15 March 2018 17:56 (seven years ago)

i did find C3 disappointing but the singles are both A1

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Thursday, 15 March 2018 17:57 (seven years ago)

a milli

"Comfortable," "Got Money," "Ms. Officer" and "Let the Beat Build" hold up, too. Lollipop... less so.

Evan R, Thursday, 15 March 2018 17:58 (seven years ago)

A Milli is more influential & emulated from a production standpoint imo

OK wow. The "A Milli" hook was pounded into my head too much to love, but I'll admit it's been pretty influential.

remember deej saying that the 12" was better than da drought 3 which i thought was wack at the time but now i think i'm inclined to agree

hmm...i remember some knockoffs at the time but i think there are more songs today living in lollipop's world than a milli's

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Thursday, 15 March 2018 18:06 (seven years ago)

I feel like a lot of instrumental trap EDM-type producers took cues from it (the snare, the way the vocal sample is chopped)

change display name (Jordan), Thursday, 15 March 2018 18:13 (seven years ago)

Both great songs, and both very weird songs that became hits through Wayne's ridiculous heat. I'm inclined to go A Milli, just cause of the sheer volume of quotable lines, but I get where Deej is coming from--Lollipop could've easily slid right onto half the mixtapes that came out of Atlanta in 2017.

piper at the gates of d'awwww (voodoo chili), Thursday, 15 March 2018 18:46 (seven years ago)

I dunno that Lollipop chorus sounded reallllly dated to me even at the time, like something Static Major shelved in the early 2000s

Evan R, Thursday, 15 March 2018 18:53 (seven years ago)

how can a melody sound 'dated' theres a freakin charlie puth song with a eugene wild melody on the charts

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Thursday, 15 March 2018 18:54 (seven years ago)

it's not the melody, it's the production and the delivery. It's all very early-'00s radio to me.

I agree about the pacing, though. There is something alluring and unusual about how unhurried it is. But then it becomes kinda grandiose and overly self-satisfied as it revisits the chorus, which kinda kills the casual hang-out vibe for me. It's so proud of itself

Evan R, Thursday, 15 March 2018 18:57 (seven years ago)

like, that rock star breakdown around the 4 minute mark, which kinda foreshadows Wayne's whole rebirth shtick, is so tacky

Evan R, Thursday, 15 March 2018 18:59 (seven years ago)

Lollipop. Never got what was so great about A Milli

josh az (2011nostalgia), Thursday, 15 March 2018 19:15 (seven years ago)

this is embarrassing to admit but "A Milli" was probably the main reason that I started paying more attention to rap music. so I vote that, even though I hate Lil Wayne's puns about shit.

had (crüt), Thursday, 15 March 2018 19:19 (seven years ago)

going with "lollipop" bc my taste shifted in its direction (from "wtf is this" to "holy shit this is a jam" after 2-3 listens) and "a milli" was just obviously outstanding from its first second. i mean, that may sound like i've got the wrong priorities, but i think i have more of a personal relationship with "lollipop" than with "a milli." love this description deej: "taking what dancehall and t-pain had done and elongating it, letting it meander." song dilates like a pupil

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Thursday, 15 March 2018 19:23 (seven years ago)

I'm a "Mr. Carter" man, myself.

... (Eazy), Thursday, 15 March 2018 19:28 (seven years ago)

not sure it ever starts w a casual hang-out vibe. dilate is a good word for what it does especially after the choruses. also hi brad

lowercase (eric), Thursday, 15 March 2018 19:29 (seven years ago)

tough call but a milli gets it for me barely. they are so close on other merits that the trunk rattling gauge is what I've gotta use for measurement and decisions here. a milli knocks about as hard as any other song i can think of.

they call me melo gelo (Spottie), Thursday, 15 March 2018 19:29 (seven years ago)

tbh I hadn't thought about either for years. "A Milli" sounded much fresher now: the witticisms, Wayne's timbre.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 15 March 2018 19:35 (seven years ago)

I dunno, it's fairly easy to imagine Lollipop coming out at any point over the last decade but impossible to imagine it coming out even two years before its actual release.

Voted A Milli without even thinking twice, despite Lollipop's fondly-held position at the top of my 'Inappropriate Wedding First Dances' playlist.

Matt DC, Thursday, 15 March 2018 22:03 (seven years ago)

i liked "a milli" more at the time & think it was just as catchy even putting the repetition of the beat aside. not sure i feel particularly connected to either record at this point. the vocal production on the "lollipop" is still really cool tho... the way autotune makes static's voice feel flat and almost reptilian but when he repeats the hook his vocals get very airy and layered. and wayne's flow on the first verse is iconic. all that said wayne is doing crazy vocal stuff on "a milli" too so \(o_O)/ anyway i voted "a milli"

Tough choice both these songs are very special to me but "A Milli" for the lyrics & the bass.

flappy bird, Monday, 19 March 2018 00:48 (seven years ago)

agree with the hivemind, both amazing. voted lollipop. the perverse eroticism is what gets me and I can't think of any true followers in that regard. future is too cold. swae lee too detached. savage is more tricky-like. none of them seem to be having fun as much as wayne. even kartel is a bit too conventional in that sense.

for years I thought Lollipop was the worst because of the chorus lyrics but at some point I came around to it and now I think it is just sonically gorgeous, def a song I could live in

A Milli is an incredible banger, but I'm going to go with Lollipop since I think it's the stronger song

If there's a better track in Wayne's catalog than these two I'd like to hear it

niels, Monday, 19 March 2018 12:20 (seven years ago)

xxp I was listing people who have a unique timbre, if that makes sense, and approach machismo in a somewhat fresh way. both of which are key wayne attributes to me.

feel free to embed some of those songs :)

niels, Tuesday, 20 March 2018 19:28 (seven years ago)

not very 'poptimist' of you, ilx

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Tuesday, 20 March 2018 19:29 (seven years ago)

none of these cuts are super-deep, but you wanted embeds, so here you go

well, there's this auto-tuned cut from Tha Drought Is Over 2 that pre-dated "Lollipop" by a few months and arguably had more influence on the likes of Future than the big hit

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tSt1uGX9fxk

there are several drought 3 freestyles, my favorites being "Live From 504," "Upgrade U," "Get High, Rule The World," "The Sky Is The Limit," and "We Takin Over" (Remix)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wtX8E_EdKRI

his katrina protest song, possibly wayne's most coherent lyrical statement:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qvGYV0h90BY

conversely, his most zonked-out track:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cykGnl1KvcM

another great one from dedication 2:

MooVaughn.org (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 20 March 2018 20:05 (seven years ago)

not gonna flood the thread anymore, i'm sure there's a thread specifically dedicated to wayne's best mixtape cuts

MooVaughn.org (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 20 March 2018 20:05 (seven years ago)

I Feel Like Dying is a masterpiece

flappy bird, Tuesday, 20 March 2018 21:24 (seven years ago)

yeah wayne mixtape catalog is amazing, i would never say these are his 'best songs' although i think in some kind of macro sense they are the most radio-ready articulations of his aesthetic approach w/out much compromise

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Wednesday, 21 March 2018 03:39 (seven years ago)

Not a huge fan of either, but "A Milli" actively annoyed me.

jaymc, Wednesday, 21 March 2018 03:46 (seven years ago)

Basically everything dude released between 2005 and 2010 is worth hearing. He dropped two classic studio records and at least 3 classic mixtapes in that era. I still stand up for No Ceilings and I think a good number of the tracks from the Carter III leaks are better than the tracks that made the album.

I agree that these two tracks are the best radio-ready examples of his aesthetic. He was an expert at manipulating radio rap to meet his ends.

MooVaughn.org (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 21 March 2018 03:54 (seven years ago)

no ceilings is classic

flappy bird, Wednesday, 21 March 2018 04:27 (seven years ago)
